Barnes, Ernest William (1874-1953)
English theologian, Bishop of Birmingham, and accomplished scientist who pondered how to relate Christian doctrines to the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence (see Christian doctrines and pluralism ). In his Gifford lectures, given in Edinburgh between 1927 and 1929, he expressed the opinion that God created the universe "as a basis for the higher forms of consciousness" and deduced that this purpose is best served by a multiplicity of inhabited worlds. Noting that there appeared to be nothing "exceptional either in mass or in size or in any other way" about our Galaxy and endorsing the view that life on Earth originated as a result of natural biochemical processes, he concluded that there are probably billions of planets in the observable universe supporting intelligent life, some of it far in advance of our own. Barnes G-function
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In mathematics , the Barnes G-function (typically denoted G z )) is a function that is an extension of superfactorials to the complex numbers . It is related to the Gamma function , the K-function and the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant , and was named after mathematician Ernest William Barnes Formally, the Barnes G-function is defined (in the form of a Weierstrass product ) as where γ is the Euler-Mascheroni constant edit
Functional equation and special values
The Barnes G-function satisfies the functional equation
G z z G z
with normalisation G(1)=1. The functional equation implies that G takes the following values at integer arguments: and thus where Γ denotes the Gamma function and K denotes the K-function edit

"According to HealthGrades, the health-care-rating organization that conducted the study, needless deaths averaged 195,000 a year in 2000, 2001, and 2002. 'That's the equivalent of 390 jumbo jets full of people dying each year,' says Dr. Samantha Collier, vice president of medical affairs." - Newsweek, August 2, 2004
"The study by Health Grades Inc., a health-care consulting firm in Colorado that rates hospitals, estimated that medical errors in U.S. hospitals contributed to almost 600,000 patient deaths over the past three years, double the number if deaths from a study published in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine."- The Wall Street Journal, July 27, 2004
"Start with healthgrades.com. This is a website you can go to that will give you the lowdown on some 650,000 doctors across the country. You can actually sort their names by specialty, location, they give you everything from board certification to number of years in the profession, lots of details, lots of data." - CNN

Notes on all sorts of topics
Here are a variety of notes and comments I have made on issues that have interested me. More notes, and some longer essays, can be found on other pages of this site. In many cases I wrote these originally for e-mail list messages or Usenet postings. See the index for a complete list
Absolute Reordination
"Absolute Reordination" means that an Anglican Priest who converts to Roman Catholicism and then wants to be a priest in that communion is unconditionally reordained as a Catholic priest. His Anglican Ordination means nothing to the RC's. The reverse is not true. An RC priest who converts to Anglicanism is not reordained. All he has to do is pledge to follow the doctrine, discipline, and worship of ECUSA, or whatever part of the Anglican Communion we are considering. All of this on both sides assumes he satisfied all other requirements for ordination in whichever Diocese we are talking about. I realize that I used male pronouns throughout the above, but the alternative for any discussion of Roman Catholic Priests is entirely theoretical. Return to index
antimatter
Anti-matter should not be confused with negative energy. A particle/anti-particle pair has a total energy that is positive. The rest energy of an anti-particle is positive, just like that of an ordinary particle. It is the charge, and various exotic quantum numbers, that cancel out. The Principle of Equivalence then implies that an anti-particle should have a positive gravitational mass, i.e., that it should be attracted by the Earth.

Wins Fight For His Life
E. L. Nibeck, Grinnel Airport Caretaker
Has Narrow Escape at Omaha Air Races
LANDS HIS SHIP WITH BROKEN LANDING WHEEL
Makes Graceful Landing on One Wheel
But Overbalanced and Nosed Into Ground.
E. L. Nibeck, Grinnell airport caretaker, won a battle for his life Saturday, May 16, at the Omaha air races when the left side of the landing gear on his Curtiss-Robin plane broke during one of the races. He was successful in landing the ship without injury to himself.
After giving a distress signal to the fire wagon, an ambulance and officials by flying over them, Nibeck made a graceful landing on one wheel. The plane overbalanced however, after gliding on one wheel a short distance and it nosed into the ground. The fire wagon and ambulance were close by and were prepared to do their stuff in case of a fire or injury. Hugging the ground too closely at the start of the race, the Curtiss-Robin ship dipped to the ground at one pilon when another ship directly above him took away his power by giving him the wind. The plane righted itself and roared upward, but after a few turns Nibeck noticed that one of the wheels on the landing gear was loose. Nibeck's feat in landing the ship with only the propeller broken attracted wide attention. Stories were carried under "Extra" headlines in four or five Omaha hewspapers. Nibeck's picture was taken by dozens of photographers including the Paramount New Reel cameraman and he was beset by countless reporters. One newspaper claimed that he was a better pilot than Lindbergh who a few months ago was forced to land on one wheel and cracked up his ship.

One morning, while Chipper the bird and his sister are enjoying the sunrise, their lovely home on top of its pole starts to shake. In fact it shakes so much that their nest is quite messed up as it is flung around the house. Chipper goes outside to see what could possibly be causing all the shaking and after a time he discovers that there is a very small donkey standing at the bottom of the pole and that the donkey is making the house shake because he is using the pole to scratch his back.
Chipper decides to ask the donkey if he would please scratch someplace else. Now the donkey, Ernest, is very sorry about the trouble he has caused but he explains to Chipper that the tree house pole is the best place for his back scratching activities. Chipper then decides to try to help Ernest find a different back scratching place.
