Peter Barlow
b. October 13, 1776, Norwich, England
d. March 1, 1862, Woolwich, England

English mathematician and engineer Peter Barlow investigated areas of mathematics, physical sciences and engineering in the first half of the nineteenth century including: railway technology, number theory, astronomical optics, electromagnetism and strengths of materials. He invented two varieties of achromatic (non-colour-distorting) telescope lenses known as Barlow lenses. In 1819, Barlow began work on the problem of deviation in ship compasses caused by the presence of iron in the hull. For his method of correcting the deviation by juxtaposing the compass with a suitably shaped piece of iron, he was awarded the Copley Medal. He also designed in 1822 one of the first models of an electric motor supplied by continuous current.
Peter Barlow was born at Norwich on October 13, 1776. The events during his first years of his life are quite unknown. It is known that he kept a school and gained some scientific knowledge. He became a correspondent to the 'Ladies' Diary', then under the management of a Dr. Hutton, professor of mathematics at Woolwich. By his advice Barlow sought and obtained the post of assistant mathematical master in 1801. He was promoted to the post of professor of mathematics in the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. His position brought him access to the arsenal, foundry and dockyard for his experiments and allowed Barlow contact with colleagues with similar interests. Barlow was one of a group including Edward Sabine, Charles Babbage, John Herschel, and Michael Faraday interested in magnetic and geomagnetic subjects.

After his mother's death, Peter lived in Glasgow with his maternal grandparents, but came down to Weatherfield to see his father from time to time - curiously his appearance altered each time ! Peter served in the navy for many years. He married Jessica but after she was unfaithful, he left the navy and came to Weatherfield with a chip on his shoulder. He got involved with several local woman including Karen Philips (later McDonald) and had flirtations with Linda Baldwin as well. He got into a car accident and gave his father's name instead of his own but convinced Ken to cover for him. He worked in the Rovers for awhile under Duggie's management and was discovered sneaking booze and not paying for it. Toyah Battersby found out and Peter was angry at her for causing him to lose his job. He was suspected of raping Toyah not long after but was cleared and was then instrumental in helping to capture Toyah's actual rapist, an acquaintance of hers.

Tracy is the Street's most troubled teenager. The victim of two broken marriages and four actresses, it's a wonder she's not any worse than she already is. The parish priest obviously got wind of Tracy early on by refusing to baptise her. She was eventually bapitised at St Margaret's, Weatherfield by Rev Smedley Betty Turpin Emily Bishop and prophetically Ken Barlow were her godparents. In September 1981 she started attending Bessie Street Junior School - prompting questions as to why she had a different name to her mother.

By his advice Barlow sought and obtained the post of assistant mathematical master in 1801. He was promoted to the post ofprofessor of mathematics in the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. His first book, titled 'An Elementary Investigation of the Theory of Numbers' was published 1811, followed in 1814 by 'A New Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary'. His best known publication is probably 'New Mathematical Tables' ( Barlow's Tables ) of the same year, giving the factors, squares, cubes, square and cube roots, reciprocals and hyperbolic logarithms of all numbers from 1 to 10.000, together with the first ten powers of numbers under 100 and the fourth and fifth of all from 100 to 1.000. In 1817 his then most useful book 'Essay on the Strength of Timber and other Materials' gave important information to engineers. These values were gained through numerous experiments in the dockyard of Woolwich. Barlow invented the technique of fixing a small piece of iron close to a ships compass to compensate for the large deviations due to the increasing quantities of iron in ship construction. After tests in various latitudes it was shown that this did not work on ships build wholly of iron. However, for this invention he received a grant of 500 pounds from the Board of Longitude, from emperor Alexander in Russia a golden watch and chain, and in 1821 the gold medal of the Society of Arts. Between 1823 and 1833 much of his work was on the field of magnetism and electro-magnetism. He even made experiments in signalling by electricity. In a letter he described experiments on the influence of iron on the rates of chronometers.

Between 1907 and 1909 Back worked for the administration of justice in Alsac-Lorraine. In 1909 he asked for a leave to finish his studies on Physics, which was granted, and left the administration of justice in 1912. He received his Ph.D. (Dr.) 1913 in Tuebingen as a pupil of Friedrich Paschen. His thesis, titled 'Zur Prestonschen Regel', covered a topic which is today known as the 'Paschen-Back-Effect'. The main instrumental improvements which allowed Back to do his studies were on the light source, which had to work in a small gap only 4 mm (3/16") wide between the poles of a strong electromagnet.

    History of Math

Background: P eter Barlow was born in Norwich, England in 1776 and died on March 1, 1862 in Kent, England. Peter's area of math focus tended to be in Number Theory. In 1806 he became the Mathematical Master at Woolwich Academy, a position he held for forty-one years. His early works were published in the 'Ladies Diary' in 1801, he soon became a well known mathematician and began publishing his articles for encyclopedias. Contributions:
    • Elementary Investigation of the Theory of Numbers 1811 The Barlow Tables were published In 1814. When initially released, these tables were called 'New Mathematical Tables. The tables give factors, squares, cubes, square roots, reciprocals and hyperbolic logarithms of all numbers from 1 to 10 000. Peter Barlow was known for his attention to detail and accuracy. The tables were used repeatedly and were reprinted several times. If not for computers and calculators, they would be used today due to their accuracy. In fact, they are still available!

    Peter Barlow (1776 - 1862)
    britischer Physiker
Peter Barlow wurde am 13. Oktober 1776 in Norwich geboren.

    One minute late
My local train company has recently been merged into the new 'Greater Anglia' franchise One Railway , which is obviously one of those names devised by a marketing company.
Now, the service doesn't seem to have changed at all since they've taken only, though that's mainly because they're suing exactly the same staff and rolling stock as Great Eastern and Anglia were using before, but I've noticed one problem with the name. My local station, and I think most of the stations in this area (and probably the country) have an automated announcement system which makes announcements of the sort:
The next train from Platform x is the xx:xx (train company) service to (destination)
Which doesn't cause any problems until you have a train going at 20, 30, 40 or 50 minutes past the hour when it becomes, as it was last night:
The next train from Platform 3 is the 20:20 One service to London Liverpool Street which, of course, actually sounds like:

there is no humour anymore, no famous one liners, no really rich talent apart from good old vetrans, however, the liz macdonald dumb and dumber routine is dreadful, this is an accomplished actress, she has held some great scenes over the years with fellow actors, what u they have her playing now is awful.
