PETER BARLOW
BARLOW, PETER (1776-1862), English writer on pure and applied mathematics, was born at Norwich in 1776 and died on the 1st of March 1862. In 1806 he was appointed mathematical master in the Woolwich Academy, and filled that post for fortyone years. In 1823 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society, and two years later received the Copley medal. Steam locomotion received much attention at his hands, and he sat on the railway commissions of 1836, 1839, 1842, 1845. He received many distinctions from British and foreign scientific societies. Barlows principal works areElementary Investigation of the Theory of Numbers (1811); New Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary (1814); Essay on Magnetic Attractions (1820). The investigations on magnetism led to the important practical discovery of a means of rectifying or compensating compass errors in ships. Besides compiling numerous useful tables, he contributed largely to the Encyclopaedia Meiropolitana. Peter Barlow was self-educated but this education was sufficiently good that he was able to compete successfully to became an assistant mathematics master at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. He was appointed to the post in 1801 and he began publishing mathematical articles in the Ladies Diary and he became sufficiently well established as a leading authority on mathematics that after a while he was asked to contribute various articles on mathematics for encyclopaedias. In addition to these articles, Barlow also published several important books, for example in 1811 he published An elementary investigation of the theory of numbers and three years later he published A new mathematical and philosophical dictionary. He is remembered most for two important contributions. In 1814 he produced a second book, in addition to the one described above, entitled New mathematical tables.

The Benefits of Barlow Lenses
One of the more useful and cost-effective tools in an amateur astronomer's accessory case is a barlow lens. Invented in the early 1800s by British mathematics professor Peter Barlow, it is a simple concave (negative) lens that, when placed between a telescope's objective lens or mirror and the eyepiece, amplifies the magnifying power of the instrument. If the standard eyepiece in your scope yields a magnification of 50x, a 2x barlow will boost that to 100x. If a high-power eyepieces in your scope yields 150x, insertion of a 2x barlow lens before the eyepiece will boost that to 300x. A barlow works by reducing the convergence of the light cone heading toward the eyepiece. In this way it increases the focal length of the telescope. Since magnification is determined by dividing the telescope's focal length by the eyepiece's focal length, you can see that by doubling the telescope's focal length, a barlow lens doubles the magnification of the system for a given eyepiece.

Barlow, Peter
Born: Oct. 13, 1776, Norwich, Norfolk, Eng.
Died: March 1, 1862, Kent Optician and mathematician who invented two varieties of achromatic (non-colour-distorting) telescope lenses known as Barlow lenses. Self-educated, he became assistant mathematics master at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, in 1801. He published numerous mathematical works, including New Mathematical Tables (1814). Later known as Barlow's Tables, this compilation of factors and functions of all numbers from 1 to 10,000 was considered so accurate and so useful that it has been regularly reprinted ever since. In 1819 Barlow began work on the problem of deviation in ship compasses caused by the presence of iron in the hull. For his method of correcting the deviation by juxtaposing the compass with a suitably shaped piece of iron, he was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society. He also conducted early investigations into the development and efficiency of the electric telegraph. Barlow constructed (1827-32) his first achromatic telescope lens by enclosing liquid carbon disulfide between two pieces of glass. His second lens (1833) was a combination of flint and crown glass. The Barlow lens has come into general use for increasing the eyepiece power of any optical instrument. : Encyclopaedia Britannica 2000
