Benjamin Banneker 's father, Robert, had been a slave who had been given his freedom and was a farmer, while his mother was Mary Banneky. Mary Banneky's mother had been an English girl, Molly Welsh who had been accused of stealing milk and condemned to death for this crime. Her sentence was then reduced to being sent to the British Colony in North America where she eventually became the owner of a farm and married one of her slaves. Their daughter Mary Banneky also married a former slave and he took her surname. Benjamin received some education at the Quaker School although once he was old enough to help on his parent's farm then he had to end his formal education. He was taught to read and write by his grandmother Molly Welsh who also gave him instruction in the Bible. There was, however, little respite for Banneker from the hard physical labour on the farm. When he was 22 years of age Banneker showed his abilities when he made a clock from wood using a pocket watch he had borrowed as a model. The clock struck the hours and continued in good working order for the rest of Banneker's life. Building this clock seems to have brought Banneker some fame in the local community in which he lived and he quickly acquired a reputation for skill in making and solving mathematical puzzles.

Benjamin Banneker
Title: Benjamin Banneker
Byline: Raymond W. Smock
Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806), was probably the best-known black person in early United States history. He was an astronomer, farmer, mathematician, and surveyor. In 1791, Banneker was an assistant to Major Andrew Ellicott, the surveyor appointed by President George Washington to lay out the boundaries of the District of Columbia. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson had recommended Banneker for this work. Banneker was born near Baltimore. His grandmother, an Englishwoman, taught him to read and write. For several winters he attended a small school open to blacks and whites. There he developed a keen interest in mathematics and science. Later, while farming, Banneker pursued his mathematical studies and taught himself astronomy. In 1753, he completed a clock built entirely of wood, each gear carved by hand. His only models were a pocket watch and a picture of a clock. The clock kept almost perfect time for over 50 years.

    BANNEKER, BENJAMIN
, African-American scientist. Banneker was the country's first important black scientist, and his accomplishments were vital to abolitionists combating late-eighteenth-century claims of innate African inferiority. The son of free African-Americans, Banneker lived his entire life on the Maryland tobacco farm he inherited from his father. His mechanical and scientific genius appeared early. Although he had received only a few winters' education at a country school, he constructed a striking clock of hand-carved wooden parts. This feat of untutored craftsmanship—he had never seen such a clock—brought him local fame. At about age fifty-seven, Banneker borrowed astronomical instruments and texts from a Quaker neighbor, George Ellicot. Working alone, he soon grasped the principles of calculus and spherical trigonometry that were necessary to construct an astronomical almanac—a virtually unheard-of feat of self-education. This accomplishment led to plans by abolition societies in Pennsylvania and Maryland to publish Banneker's almanac as a testimony to the intellectual capabilities of Africans. In 1791, the surveyor appointed to lay out the boundaries of the District of Columbia employed Banneker as his assistant. This appointment was, in itself, used to advantage in the campaign to undermine the arguments about blacks' mental inferiority. In a reference to ruminations about African inferiority in Thomas Jefferson's

, mathematician and scientist. Banneker, a free black man, gained early fame when he designed and constructed a striking clock of hand-carved wooden parts despite never having seen one. He was a successful farmer with only a few years of formal education who taught himself calculus and spherical trigonometry in order to construct a popular astronomical almanac (published annually from 1791 to 1797). Abolitionists cited his achievements as evidence of the intellectual equality of blacks, and Banneker himself argued the issue in letters to Thomas Jefferson.

With it he sent a letter calling for the abolition of slavery and a liberal attitude toward blacks. Banneker's skills impressed Jefferson. Jefferson sent a copy of the almanac to the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris as evidence of the talent of blacks. Opponents of slavery in the United States and England also used the almanacs as evidence of the abilities of black people.

Benjamin Banneker was an astronomer, scientist, mathematician, surveyor, clock-maker, author, and social critic. Most notable about his accomplishments was that despite racial constraints and little formal education, he was a self-taught man. By the end of his life, his achievements were well-known around the world. Unlike many blacks of his time, Banneker was not born into slavery. The maternal side of his family determined this fate. His grandmother Mary Walsh was a white Englishwoman who was sentenced to seven years of servitude for stealing milk.
