Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker, the son of Robert and Mary Bannaky was born in 1731. His grandfather was a slave from Africa and his grandmother, an indentured servant from England. His grandfather was known as Banna Ka, then later as Bannaky, his grandmother as Molly Walsh. His grandmother was a maid in England who had been sent to Maryland as an indentured servant. When she finished her seven years of , she bought a farm along with two slaves to help her take care of it. Walsh freed both slaves and married one, Bannaky. They had several children, among them a daughter named Mary. When Mary Bannaky grew up, she bought a slave named Robert, married him and had several children, including Benjamin. Benjamin Banneker grew up on the family farm. Around town it was known as "Bannaky Springs" due to the fresh water springs on the land. Bannaky used ditches and little dams to control the water from the springs for irrigation. His work was so reliable that the Bannaky's crops flourished even in dry spells. The family of free blacks raised good tobacco crops all the time. Molly, Banneker's grandmother, taught him and his brothers to read, using her Bible as a lesson book. There was no school in the valley for the boys to attend. Then one summer, a Quaker school teacher came to live in the valley. He set up a school for boys. Benjamin Bannaky attended this school. The schoolmaster changed the spelling of his name to Banneker. At school he learned to write and do simple arithmetic.

Narrative Essay
Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806), an African American mathematician and amateur astronomer, calculated ephemeredes for almanacs for the years 1792 through 1797 that were widely distributed. On Nov. 9, 1731, Benjamin Banneker was born in Baltimore County, Md. He was the son of an African slave named Robert, who had bought his own freedom, and of Mary Banneky, who was the daughter of an Englishwoman and a free African slave. Benjamin lived on his father's farm and attended a nearby Quaker country school for several seasons. He received no further formal education but enjoyed reading and taught himself literature, history, and mathematics. He worked as a tobacco planter for most of his life. In 1761, at the age of 30, Banneker constructed a striking wooden clock without having seen a clock before that time, although he had examined a pocket watch. The clock operated successfully until the time of his death. At the age of 58 Banneker became interested in astronomy through the influence of a neighbor, George Ellicott, who lent him several books on astronomy as well as a telescope and drafting instruments. Without further guidance or assistance, Banneker taught himself the science of astronomy; he made projections for solar and lunar eclipses and computed ephemeredes (tables of the locations of celestial bodies) for an almanac.

Background Information: Benjamin Banneker was born in 1731. He was the son of Robert and Mary Bannaky. His mother was the daughter of an Englishwoman and an African slave. His father was a former slave who had his freedom purchased from slavery. They lived on a farm along the Patapsco River approximately 10 miles from Baltimore. The farm was known as "Bannaky Springs" because of the fresh water springs on the land. Benjamin grew up helping his family raise tobacco crops. As a child, Benjamin learned to read from his grandmother. She taught him using her Bible, which was the only book she owned. Later Benjamin was able to attend a Quaker school for boys where he learned how to write and do simple arithmetic. It was also at this school that the spelling of his name was changed. It was Benjamin's schoolmaster who changed his last name from Bannaky to Banneker. Benjamin had obtained an 8th grade education by the age of 15. It was then that he took over the family farm. He spent most of his adult life as a tobacco farmer. When Benjamin was 21 years old, he saw a patent watch. He was fascinated with how the watch worked so he took it apart. By studying the pieces he created similar pieces that he carved out of wood. Benjamin used the pieces he carved to build the first clock to ever be fully assembled in America. His clock kept accurate time for over 40 years.

Considered by many to be the first African-American scientist, Benjamin Banneker was a free-born descendant of slaves who went on to become a famous astronomer, mathematician and surveyor. Raised on a tobacco farm in rural Maryland, he attended school, but was mostly self-taught in the sciences. Although Banneker worked most of his life as a farmer, his analytical and problem-solving skills have become legendary. His achievements are indeed impressive: at the age of 24 he figured out how to build a clock and constructed one out of wood; he taught himself astronomy and published a popular almanac, Benjamin Banneker's Almanac , from 1792 to 1797; he was appointed to assist in surveying the Federal Territory, the plot of land that was to become Washington, D.C.; he worked on calculating the precise measurement of the meter; and he corresponded with

Benjamin Banneker , originally Banna Ka , or Bannakay November 9 October 9 ) was an African-American astronomer clockmaker , and publisher , and was instrumental in surveying the District of Columbia Benjamin Banneker's mother was Mary Banneky, whose mother, Molly Welsh, was accused of stealing milk and sent from England to America as punishment. She became the owner of a farm and married one of her slaves, whom she freed. Benjamin's father, Robert Bannakay, built a series of dams and watercourses that successfully irrigated the family farm , where Banneker lived most of his life. Banneker was taught to read and do simple arithmetic by his grandmother and by a Quaker schoolmaster, who changed his name to Banneker. Once he was old enough to help on his parents' farm, his formal education ended. At 21, Banneker saw a neighbor's patent pocket watch, borrowed it, took it apart to draw all its pieces, then reassembled it, and returned it running to its owner. Banneker then carved large-scale wooden replicas of each piece, calculating the gear assemblies himself, and used the parts to make a striking clock. The clock continued to work, striking each hour, for more than 40 years.

Benjamin Banneker author, scientist, mathematician, farmer, astronomer, publisher and urban planner was descended from enslaved Africans, an indentured English servant, and free men and women of color. His grandmother, Molly Welsh, was an English dairy maid who was falsely convicted of theft and indentured to a Maryland tobacco farmer. After working out her indenture, Welsh rented and farmed some land, eventually purchasing two African slaves whom she freed several years later.
In violation of Maryland law, Welsh wed one of her former slaves, Bannke or Bannaka, said to be the son of a chief. Their daughter Mary also married an African a man from Guinea who had been enslaved, baptized as Robert, and freed who took Banneker as his surname upon their marriage. In 1731, they named their first child Benjamin.
Young Benjamin grew up in Baltimore County, one of two hundred free blacks among a population of four thousand slaves and thirteen thousand whites. He was taught to read by his grandmother Molly, and briefly attended a one-room interracial school taught by a Quaker. He showed an early interest in mathematics and mechanics, preferring books to play.
At the age of 22, having seen only two timepieces in his lifetime a sundial and a pocket watching Banneker constructed a striking clock almost entirely out of wood, based on his own drawings and calculations. The clock continued to run until it was destroyed in a fire forty years later.

Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker ble født i USA, utenfor Baltimore, Maryland.
Benjamin Banneker hadde imidlertid sterk interesse for bøker.
