    Balmer series
A series of emission or absorption lines in the visible part of the hydrogen spectrum that is due to transitions between the second (or first excited) state and higher energy states of the hydrogen atom; they are named after their discoverer, the Swiss physicist Johann Balmer (1825-1898). The transition from the third level to the second level yields the red H-alpha emission line at 6563 Å; H-beta is at 4861 Å, H-gamma at 4342 Å, and H-delta at 4101 Å. The Balmer jump is the relatively abrupt decrease in a continuous spectrum at about 3650 Å caused by hydrogen absorption lines in the Balmer series crowding to their series limit.

    Johann Jakob Balmer
Johann Jakob Balmer May 1 March 12 ) was a Swiss mathematician and an honorary physicist He was born in Lausen Switzerland , the son of a Chief Justice also named Johann Jakob Balmer. His mother was Elizabeth Rolle Balmer, and he was the oldest son. During his schooling he excelled in mathematics, and so decided to focus on that field when he attended university. He studied at the University of Karlsruhe and the University of Berlin , then completed his Ph.D. from the University of Basel in with a dissertation on the cycloid . Johann then spent his entire life in Basel, where he taught at a school for girls. He also lectured at the University of Basel. In he married Christine Pauline Rinck at the age of 43. Th couple had a total of six children. Despite being a mathematician, he is not remembered for any work in that field; rather, his major contribution (made at the age of sixty, in ) was an empirical formula for the spectral lines of the hydrogen atom. Balmer's formula computed the wavelength as follows:

October 1881 in Freiburg and visited school (Gymnasium) in Strasbourg until 1900. Before his studies on Physics in Tuebingen between 1909-13 he studied law from 1902-06 in Strasbourg, Munich and Berlin. Between 1907 and 1909 Back worked for the administration of justice in Alsac-Lorraine. In 1909 he asked for a leave to finish his studies on Physics, which was granted, and left the administration of justice in 1912. He received his Ph.D. (Dr.) 1913 in Tuebingen as a pupil of Friedrich Paschen. His thesis, titled 'Zur Prestonschen Regel', covered a topic which is today known as the 'Paschen-Back-Effect'. The main instrumental improvements which allowed Back to do his studies were on the light source, which had to work in a small gap only 4 mm (3/16") wide between the poles of a strong electromagnet.

(Q-2) The Atomic Structure of Matter
    The Existence of Atoms
Around 1900, the physics of macroscopic objects (sticks and stones, bricks, bones... etc.) was thought to be well understood (except, as Lord Kelvin supposedly remarked, for a few details..). Motions obeyed Newton's Laws , which explained the motion of celestial objects with remarkable accuracy. Electricity obeyed the laws of Ampere , Faraday and Maxwell , and light was revealed to be an electromagnetic wave , an identification underscored by the discovery of radio waves by Heinrich Hertz, who generated them from a rapidly alternating electrical current. Technology closely followed this new physical understanding and made it pay handsomely, giving us electric motors, steam turbines, telegraphs and telephone, ice-making machinery, airships and more. Underlying it all were atoms . All material objects seemed made up of particles too small to be seen, but whose existence could be deduced from a host of subtle phenomena . Phenomena associated with the atoms themselves, however, were not at all understood, e.g. the physics behind chemical bonding , by which atoms combined to form molecules.
