83. Baker Farm -- From Walden By Henry Thoreau, With Notes And Analysis
Thoreau visits baker Farm where he tries to teach the family about Thoreavian economics.
http://www.kenkifer.com/Thoreau/baker_f.htm
Baker Farm
F rom my first reading of Walden , "Baker Farm" has been one of my favorite chapters. All of Walden is an explanation of Thoreau's philosophy of life, but here he gets the chance to explain his lifestyle to a poor family who could directly profit from it. Thus, he explains how he lives very simply and practically. However, the message is ignored, as the family is content with following customs rather than thinking out new solutions. B aker Farm epitomizes for me the problem of explaining Thoreauvian values to the people around us. A Thoreauvian understanding of the world can solve a lot of practical problems, even if the person is not interested in meditation or the beauty of Nature. Indeed, the current mode of living, with people on a consumer treadmill, never getting an opportunity to enjoy the material possessions that they have heaped up, while damaging both the environment and their own health, is very difficult to defend, if ever examined. However, people do not examine the whole problem but simply react to one issue at a time, often in a contradictory manner. And thus, they cannot see any value in making sweeping lifestyle changes. T his chapter also provides an effective encapsulation of the Thoreauvian view of life.

Henry Baker
Born in London on May 8, 1698, Henry Baker was a significant contributor to the popularization of microscopy and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. During his younger years, he served as an apprentice to a bookseller and later made his fortune by devising and practicing a system to teach hearing and speech impaired children. Baker's achievements were noticed by the writer Daniel Defoe and inspired his novel The History of the Life and Adventures of Duncan Campbell , the title character of which is a deaf conjurer. Defoe's youngest daughter, Sophia, was also intrigued by Baker and the couple married in 1729. Having attained wealth early in his life, Baker was left with ample time to pursue his many interests. Perhaps influenced by his father-in-law, Baker was often involved in the arts and was a writer and translator of poetry. He was also connected with Defoe in the launching of the publication The Universal Spectator and Weekly Journal and was a founder of the Society of the Arts, established in 1754.

SUE BAKER
Sue Baker, a junior, traveled to southwest England as a Red Box missionary this past summer. Her ministry was concentrated in two countries, Devon and Cornwall. In those countries, Baker and a team of British missionaries visited four different towns. She used a different approach to ministry at each of these towns. The first stop on the mission tour was a town called Copplestone. Unfortunately, she lost her voice soon after she arrived because of her allergies to the high pollen count. Her week's ministry in Copplestone focused on door-to-door evangelism. Baker was paired with a native British 18-year-old named Ivan, whom she describes as a very zealous evangelist. They surveyed the people with questions about Jesus and God. Baker said she learned that amazingly few people knew Jesus was the Son of God. Some could only answer that He was in the Bible. Another part of the ministry focused on the local teen-agers. Baker and the other missionaries organized a soccer game and barbecue. Baker stressed the importance of reaching out to British teens. Only 5 percent of that age group attend church regularly. The team also ministered in the local high schools. British public schools are allowed to have religious instructions, which takes place in the form of an assembly. The school officials bring in examples of many types of religions, not just Christianity, for the students to experience. Baker observed that there were many things that can be done in the schools of Britain, unlike the United States where religious studies are forbidden.

Henry Baker 's parents were Sarah Ann Britham and Henry Baker. His father, also called Henry, was a domestic butler. He attended a number of small schools in Cambridge before being educated at Perse School in Cambridge. He won a sizarship to St John's College in the summer of 1883 but remained at Perse School to prepare for the Cambridge Scholarship examinations, which he sat in December 1883. In the examinations he won a scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge, matriculating in October 1884. In 1887 he was Senior Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos. In fact he was first equal, being bracketed in top place with two other students. He was elected a Fellow of St John's College in 1889 and, in the same year, won the first Smith's prize. Baker would remain at Cambridge for the whole of his career, strongly influencing the teaching of pure mathematics in that university and in the rest of Great Britain. From 1890 to 1895 he was a College Lecturer, being influenced by
