Archival material related to Jakob Nielsen
Jakob Nielsen papers
A collection of Jakob Nielsen papers is located in the Archive , Institute for Mathematical Science, University of Copenhagen. An inventory of the papers is accessible in Danish and English at the homepages of the Archive. The Nielsen papers are a collection of mathematical reprints, which Nielsen received during his career from various mathematicians. In some cases there are also press clippings related to a person (mainly the Danish mathematicians) or correspondence (see below ). There may also be manuscripts (see below) , but mainly manuscripts by others than Nielsen. Archive no. 6036 at The National Archives, Copenhagen is material from Nielsen from the period 1945-57. There are 3 boxes deposited in 1982. They are inaccessible after the 50 years rule (application needed to get access) and have not been registered. The content is: correspondence, summary of meetings etc. from Nielsen's activities at UNESCO.

The following manuscripts written by Nielsen are in the Jakob Nielsen papers (box numbers refer to that collection).

General, short description of the collection
A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

    and EDWARD J. McSHANE
This is an interview of William L. Duren, Nathan Jacobson, and Edward J. McShane on 10 April 1984 at the University of Virginia. The interviewer is Karen Parshall. Jacobson: I'd like to start with my introduction to the Princeton mathematics department. I came there in 1930, in late September I believe is when the term started. I had come from the University of Alabama, and of course it was very exciting to go to Princeton, which had a reputation of being one of the three greatest centers of mathematics in the country. It probably was the greatest at that time. The department had a meeting of the new graduate students with all the faculty, which included James W. Alexander, Oswald Veblen, Solomon Lefschetz, and J.H.M. Wedderburn. I think all came to this meeting. We were introduced to them, and then they all offered us advice as to how we should conduct ourselves to become mathematicians. One of the things I remember most clearly was that Alexander's advice was to tell us how to get into the library in case the building was locked. We didn't have keys. The building was Palmer Laboratory, which was the building that was used before Fine Hall was completed a year after that in 1931. Anyway, his advice was that we could climb up to the second-story window. Alexander was a famous mountain climber; he even had a method of climbing Long's Peak (Colorado) named after him. He used to climb the Graduate School tower and do various other things of that sort. But that was his advice for us students. It started us out properly in our careers at Princeton.

Register of the Officers and Faculty of the University of North Carolina 1795 - 1945
Compiled by the Staff of the North Carolina Collection
Chapel Hill, 1954 Need for a comprehensive catalogue of the officers and faculty of the University of North Carolina led to the compilation of this register by the staff of the North Carolina Collection. The period covered, 1795-1945, is that of the Sesqui-Centennial being celebrated at the time when it was compiled. No register has been made previously with the exception of the list made by Cornelia Phillips Spencer in 1889 and published in Kemp Plummer Battle's Sketches of the University of North Carolina Together with a Catalogue of Officers and Students (Chapel Hill, 1889) The main source was The University of North Carolina Catalogue , 1818/19-1825/26, 1827/28-1944/45. For the early years before the Catalogue was published, the manuscript minutes of the Board of Trustees and Kemp Plummer Battle's History of the University of North Carolina (Raleigh, 1907-1912) were used. Inclusive dates of service and changes in rank and title are indicated by the date of the catalogue in which they appear. Advanced degrees awarded during period of service are indicated by dates of catalogue in which they are first recorded. Teachers in Summer School are omitted following the year 1899 when they ceased to be recorded in the general Catalogue. Student assistants are omitted following 1899 for the sake of brevity.

Reviewed by Victor Pambuccian The twentieth century has been not only the century of "Euclid must go!" but also the one in which the axiomatics of the many geometries that the nineteenth century had brought to the fore was carried out with remarkable success. These axiomatic accomplishments have been largely forgotten. Few would associate the axiomatic foundations of geometry with the names of Emil Artin, Karl Menger, Kurt Reidemeister, Max Dehn, Alfred Tarski, Reinhold Baer, Wilhelm Klingenberg, and Bartel Leenert van der Waerden, who are better known for their contributions to other fields that later became mainstream.
