Introduction
"R" Reading Curse of the Pharaoh End-of-the-World Prophecies ... Z Bacon, Roger (1214-1292 or 1294) The English Franciscan monk Roger Bacon (nicknamed Doctor Mirabilis, “The Admirable Doctor”) was a noted medieval advocate of experimentation and observation as a means to learning, an advanced idea for that time in history. It was said that he built a bronze head that spoke and answered questions, but such canards are often circulated about persons of accomplishment.
Bacon was probably the greatest scientific mind of his time, even before science was delineated and organized, albeit hobbled by the religious restrictions of intellectual exercise under which he necessarily labored.
In about 1240 he also briefly described the tricks of the conjurors of his time and declared them to be harmless amusements. His learned opinion on tricks was largely ignored, and conjurors continued to be persecuted by ignorant secular and ecclesiastic authorities as minions of Satan
Bacon adopted the prophecies of Joaquim of Flore (see Appendix III , year 1260), but this and his credulous belief in astrology and other forms of mysticism aside, he was a genuine contributor to knowledge.

Returning to Oxford, he taught there until when his superiors obliged him to discontinue. He had become a Franciscan, but just when is not known. Jerome de Ascoli, the General of the Franciscans, condemned the writings of Roger Bacon in , and ordered him confined in a monastery. How long he was detained is unknown, but he was free in when his Compendium of Theology appeared. His most noted works are the Opus Majus Opus Minus , and Opus Tertium , comprising recommendations for reform in ecclesiastical studies and in the system of education. He was more interested in mathematics, the natural sciences, and languages than many of his great contemporaries, and placed great emphasis on the experimental sciences. In his writings he even mentions automobiles and flying machines.

All science requires mathematics. The knowledge of mathematical things is almost innate in us. This is the easiest of sciences, a fact which is obvious in that no one's brain rejects it; for laymen and people who are utterly illiterate know how to count and reckon.

Mathematics

Reasoning draws a conclusion, but does not make the conclusion certain, unless the mind discovers it by the path of experience.
Bacon, Roger
Reason

Argument is conclusive... but... it does not remove doubt, so that the mind may rest in the sure knowledge of the truth, unless it finds it by the method of experiment. For if any man who never saw fire proved by satisfactory arguments that fire burns. his hearer's mind would never be satisfied, nor would he avoid the fire until he put his hand in it that he might learn by experiment what argument taught.

Bacon, Roger (c.1214-c.1292)
English Franciscan and philosopher. Born in either Somerset or in Gloucestershire, he may have begun his studies in Oxford, but certainly spent some time in Paris. His published works include a series of questions on Aristotle metaphysical and physical treatises (c.1240-1246). He also invested heavily, whilst in his thirties, in the study of languages, mathematics and experimental science and was particularly influenced by Robert Grossteste. In 1257 he entered the Franciscan order in a bid to pursue his chosen studies further still. His place in the history of science and religion is hard to assess, as recent scholarship has shown that his work is not as original as once claimed. His knowledge of Arabic and Greek texts and their translation was vast, though it never progressed into any unified or systematic scheme of thought. The real achievement of the man has been lost beneath the veneer of a reputation for magical powers and mechanical invention. The twentieth century has seen attempts to represent as a martyr of science and freedom of thought, but these have been to no avail.
