Sa « Machine Analytique » (aussi appelée Machine de Babbage) n'a jamais fonctionné de son vivant (elle était mécanique ce qui entraînait trop de frottements), mais fut un gouffre financier quand même. Sa programmeuse fut Augusta Adélaïde Byron, comtesse de Lovelace, voir Ada Cette machine ne fonctionna qu'à la fin de notre siècle, et encore, elle comportait tellement de pièces mécaniques qu'il fallut utiliser toutes les finesses de l'usinage moderne pour limiter les frottements. Du temps de son inventeur, les engrenages n'auraient jamais voulu tourner... Cette machine était programmable, mais ce n'était pas un ordinateur, étant pilotée par l'homme pour des raisons philosophiques ; elle utilisait des cartes perforées, comportait imprimante et lecteur de cartes . Babbage, Charles engelsk matematiker och uppfinnare (1791-1871), professor i matematik i Cambridge. Han tänkte ut den första datorn, den helt mekaniska så kallade analysmaskinen , men lyckades aldrig bygga den. Tillsammans med Ada Lovelace skrev Babbage de första dataprogrammen. Innan han tänkte ut den analysmaskinen konstruerade han den så kallade differensmaskinen , som var en avancerad räknemaskin men ingen dator. Den blev heller aldrig färdigbyggd, trots att brittiska regeringen satsade stora pengar på projektet. Att maskinerna aldrig blev byggda berodde på en kombination av omständigheter, bland annat att Babbage inte var ingenjör och inte behärskade det praktiska konstruktionsarbetet. Men eftersom han tänkte rätt räknas han som den förste datorkonstruktören.

Shore (Eds.), The Transformation of Psychology (pp. 133-152). Washington D.C. American Psychological Association Press. Abstract Charles Babbage (1791-1871) began work on a mechanical computer that he dubbed the Analytical Engine in the mid-1830s. The machine was to constitute a dramatic improvement on his earlier Difference Engine, which he had originally conceived primarily as a way of automating the process of computing and printing accurate mathematical tables. Almost from the beginning, however, people around Babbage described his inventions in ways that suggest they believed the machines to be endowed with, or at least to closely model, authentic mental powers. Even today, one regularly sees the Analytical Engine cited as an early attempt at computational cognitive science. Babbage himself, however, seems to have steadfastly refrained from making public claims regarding the putative mentality of his machines.
