Introduction
Charles Babbage (1791-1871) is widely regarded as the first computer pioneer and the great ancestral figure in the history of computing. Babbage excelled in a variety of scientific and philosophical subjects though his present-day reputation rests largely on the invention and design of his vast mechanical calculating engines. His Analytical Engine conceived in 1834 is one of the startling intellectual feats of the nineteenth century. The design of this machine possesses all the essential logical features of the modern general purpose computer. However, there is no direct line of descent from Babbage’s work to the modern electronic computer invented by the pioneers of the electronic age in the late 1930s and early 1940s largely in ignorance of the detail of Babbage's work. Babbage failed to build a complete machine. The most widely accepted reason for this failure is that Victorian mechanical engineering were not sufficiently developed to produce parts with sufficient precision. In 1985 the Science Museum launched a project to build a complete Babbage Engine to original designs to explore the practical viability of Babbage’s schemes. The Engine chosen was Babbage’s Difference Engine No. 2 designed between 1847 and 1849. The calculating section of the Engine, which weighs 2.6 tonnes and consists of 4,000 separate parts, was completed and working in November 1991, one month before the 200th anniversary of Babbage's birth.

An Essay On ...
The Industrial Revolution

Introduction:
Three material inventions combined to bring the period (the Middle Ages) to a close and to usher in the modern world. In each case the actual origin of the invention is a matter of dispute.
  • The Mariner's Compass seems to have been introduced into Europe by Italian traders at the time of the Crusades, and to have been used in the later Middle Ages by English merchants voyaging to Iceland.
  • Gunpowder was known in the thirteenth century, but was first put to warlike use by the Florentines early in the fourteenth.
  • The printing-press was invented in the first half of the fifteenth century, probably by Lourens Coster of Haarlem, thus, it seems, the invention occurred prior to Gutenberg of Mainz. Of these three inventions the work, not of monks or knights, but of traders and burghers the first made ocean navigation possible, the second ended the military domination of the feudal lords, and the third ended the clerical monopoly to learning. Without the first two it is unlikely that the new civilization of the West, jammed between Islam and the Atlantic, would even have survived. Without the third its survival would have been culturally sterile.
There were a large number of 18th century inventors, some known and of whom much has been written, a few of whom we shall shortly refer; but there were a greater number whose names and the nature of their inventions have been lost to history.

    Charles Babbage

    died Oct. 18, 1871, London
British mathematician and inventor. Educated at Cambridge University, he devoted himself from about 1812 to devising machines capable of calculating mathematical tables. His first small calculator could perform certain computations to eight decimals. In 1823 he obtained government support for the design of a projected machine with a 20-decimal capacity. In the 1830s he developed plans for the so-called Analytical Engine, capable of performing any arithmetical operation on the basis of instructions from punched cards, a memory unit in which to store numbers, sequential control, and most of the other basic elements of the present-day computer. The forerunner of the modern digital computer , the Analytical Engine was never completed. In 1991 British scientists built Difference Engine No. 2 (accurate to 31 digits) to Babbage's specifications. His other contributions included establishing the modern postal system in England, compiling the first reliable actuarial tables, and inventing the locomotive cowcatcher.

    Charles Babbage
