Career Mathematician and, through his work on the `difference engine' and the `analytical engine', a pioneer of computer technology. The mechanical problems encountered in his own workshop during the government-financed work on his `difference engine' led him to a general interest in manufacturing problems. Economy of machinery... was the result of an investigative tour of British and European factories. It is his interest in the use of accurate mathematical and statistical work in various fields, including economics, which justifies his reputation as a forerunner of operations reserch.

Babbage, Charles English mathematician, who lived from 1792 to 1871, and inventor, famous for his attempts to develop a mechanical computational aid he called the analytical engine . Although it was never constructed and was decimal rather than binary (see Numeration ) in conception, it clearly anticipated the modern digital Computer . A scientist with extremely broad interests, Babbage probed the roles of learned societies and government in advancing science, and wrote on mass production and on what is now called operational research.

BABBAGE, Charles Charles Babbage was born on 26 December 1792, possibly at Teignmouth in Devon (though Moseley, 1964, mentions Totnes and Kyman, 1985, gives the place of birth as Walworth, Surrey), the son of a prominent banker. He died in London on 18 October 1871. Although his scientific work was largely ignored in his own lifetime, it was rediscovered in the mid-twentieth century, and Babbage is now regarded as the inventor of the modern computer. He was also a political economist of note, and his ideas about management, as about science, were ahead of their time; he was an important forerunner of the scientific management movement. Babbage was educated at schools in Devon and Middlesex, although the Dictionary of National Biography Around 1820 Babbage began his first serious effort to develop a calculating engine, the so-called ‘difference engine’. Mechanical calculators had been developed as early as the sixteenth century; the philosopher Blaise Pascal had designed one example, and other inventors since had designed, and even sold commercially, various types of calculating engine. Babbage, who had studied these earlier models while at Cambridge, became convinced of their wider potential. His first view was that calculating engines, faster and more accurate than human calculations, could correct errors in astronomical tables and thus make marine navigation more accurate and safer, but he quickly realized that such engines could have much broader applications in commerce, industry and government.

, 9th ed. (1898). S.v. "Babbage, Charles." BABBAGE, CHARLES, a distinguished English mathematician and mechanician, was born 20th December 1792, at Teignmouth in Devonshire. He was educated at a private school, and afterwards entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1814, hough he did not compete in the mathematical tripos, be acquired a great reputation at the university. In the year after he graduated, he contributed a paer on the "Calculus of Functions" to the Philosophical Transactions , and in 1816 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society. Along with Herschel and Peacock he laboured to rasie the standard of mathematical instruction in England, and specially endeavoured to supersede the Newtonian by the Leibnitizian notation in the Calculus. With this object the three friends translated, in 1816, Lacroix's Treatise on the Differential and Integral Calculus , and added, in 1820, two volumes of examples. Mr Babbage's attention seems to have been very early drawn to the number and importance of the errors introduced into astronomical and other calculations through inaccuracies int he computation of tables. He contributed to the Royal Society some notices on tre relation between notation and mechanism; and in 1822, in a letter to Sir H. Davy on the applciation of machinery to the calculation and printing of of mathematical tables, he discussed the principles of a calculating machine, to the construction of which he devoted many years of his life. Government was induced to grant its aid, and the inventor himself spent a portion of his private fortune in the prosecution of his undertaking. He traveled through several of the countries of Europe, examining different systems of machinery; and some of the results of his investigations were published in the admirable little work

Babbage, Charles
English mathematician who devised a precursor of the computer.
He designed an analytical engine, a general-purpose mechanical computing device for performing different calculations according to a program input on punched cards (an idea borrowed from the Jacquard loom).
This device was never built, but it embodied many of the principles on which digital computers are based.
As a student at Cambridge, Babbage assisted John Herschel with his astronomical calculations and thought they could be better done by machines.
His mechanical calulator, or difference engine, of 1822, which could compute squares to six places of decimals, got him a commission from the British Admiralty for an expanded version.
But this project was abandoned in favour of the analytical engine, which he worked on for the rest of his life.
The difference engine could perform only one function, once it was set up.
