Biographical Note
Max Dehn (1878-1952) was a mathematician whose research focused on geometry, topology, group theory, and the history of mathematics. He began his career at Frankfurt University (1921-1935) and in 1940 immigrated to the United States where he worked with the Black Mountain college.
Scope and Contents
The Max Dehn Papers document the career of Max Dehn (1878-1952) and relate chiefly to his research in geometry, topology, group theory, and the history of mathematics. Most of the papers are from Dehn's years at Frankfurt University and, after his immigration in 1940 to the United States, Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Included are lecture notes by E. Hellinger, correspondence, notebooks, manuscripts of publications, reprints, and lecture and course notes by Dehn. Correspondents include E. Artin, O. Blumenthal, H. Bohr, S. Breuer, C. Caratheodory, M. Kneser, E. Noether, M. Pasch, O. Toeplitz, and E. Zermelo. The majority of the materials are written in German, with some English and French.

Jakob Nielsen papers
General, short description of the collection
A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

In Memoriam: Natascha Artin Brunswick, Editor Emeritus
    Louis Nirenberg
Abstract. Natascha (Jasny) Artin Brunswick died February 3, 2003, in Princeton, New Jersey, at the age of 93. I first met Natascha in 1946 when she joined the group around Richard Courant at New York University. I was a graduate student at the time. In 1948, when the New York University journal Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics was founded, Natascha became the technical editor, and she continued as editor until 1991. In 1956, when the SIAM journal Theory of Probability and Its Applications was founded, she became the primary translation editor, and she continued in this position until 1999. She did everything by hand, without computers. In addition she taught mathematics and Russian and translated works from French, Russian, and German for several other journals. Natascha Jasny was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 11, 1909. After the Bolshevik takeover, the family moved south and, in 1922, fled again, settling finally in Hamburg, Germany. There, after finishing high school at age 16, Natascha studied mathematics at the University of Hamburg, taking courses from Emil Artin, whom she married in 1932, and others including von Neumann and Cassirer. In Hamburg, the Artin children Karin and Michael were born; Tom was born later in the United States. In 1937 Professor Artin was dismissed from the university because of the racial laws, and he and his family were allowed to leave, arriving in the United States in the summer of 1937. In 1938 they moved to Bloomington, Indiana. Natascha, although formally an enemy alien, taught Russian in the U.S. Army Special Training Program and later at the University of Indiana. In 1946 Professor Artin received an appointment at Princeton University, New Jersey, and the family moved there. He and Natascha were divorced in the 1950s, and in 1959 she married Mark Brunswick, the composer and professor of music at City College.
