    Antoine Arnauld (1612-1694)
"Nothing is more to be esteemed than aptness in discerning the true from the false. Other qualities of mind are of limited use, but precision of thought is essential to every aspect and walk of life. To distinguish truth from error is difficult not only in the sciences but also in the everyday affairs men engage in and discuss. Men are everywhere confronted with alternative routessome true and others falseand reason must choose between them. Who chooses well has a sound mind, who chooses ill a defective one. Capacity for discerning the truth is the most important measure of minds."

Saint Cyran was a schoolmate, correspondent and advocate of the views of Cornelieus Jansen, Bishop of Ypres (1585-1638) whose posthumously published book Augustinus attacked the doctrine of grace of the 16th century Spanish Jesuit Francisco de Molina (1535-1600). Jansen's book, published in 1640, was condemned by Rome in 1641, and linked with the condemnation of an earlier book by a Michael de Bay. Saint Cyran persuaded Arnauld to return to the issues of his earlier thesis and to show that Jansen's doctrine of grace essentially resembled that of Saint Augustine and not those of de Bay. Arnauld with equal boldness defended Jansen and attacked the Jesuits in , . On Arnauld's Augistinian view, (as James Dickoff and Patricia James put in their "Introduction" to

The public, moreover, was flattered by the semblance of being appealed to as a tribunal on the most controverted questions of theology, all of which Arnauld had taken into consideration when he wrote the book in French. The treatise found warm partisans in all classes of society, even among the clergy themselves. But adversaries were also aroused. Arnauld was attacked, refuted, denounced to the Holy See Alexander VII three were extracts taken almost word for word from Arnauld's book summarizing his doctrine. The consequences of this work were most pernicious. According to the testimony of St. Vincent de Paul there was a noticeable decrease in the frequentation of the Sacraments. By exacting a too rigid preparation and a purity of conscience and perfection of life unattainable by many Christians , Arnauld set up a barrier to Holy Communion that kept many away. He forgot that the reception of the Eucharist is not the reward of virtues, but the remedy for infirmities, and under the pretext of holiness he prevented the faithful from approaching the source of all holiness. Meanwhile the "Augustinus", condemned by

Antoine Arnauld, sometimes called The Great Arnauld, was the son of Antoine Arnauld senior (1560-1619) and Catherine Marie de Druy. Antoine Arnauld senior and his wife were the founders of a French family of the lesser nobility who became the leading Jansenist family of France. Jansenists were followers of Cornelist Otto Jansen (1585-1638) who led a Roman Catholic reform movement named after him. Jansen put forward his views in Augustinus (1640) which he based on the teachings of St Augustine, particularly St Augustine's arguments against Pelagius. Pelagius had argued that men can achieve salvation through their actions but Jansen argued that men cannot achieve salvation through their actions since it is predestined who Christ will lead to eternal life, the select few, and who are doomed to damnation, the multitude. Antoine Arnauld senior was a highly respected Parisian lawyer who with his wife Catherine Marie de Druy had twenty children, ten of who survived to adulthood. Their oldest child was Robert, born in 1588, while their youngest was Antoine Arnauld, the subject of this biography. When Antoine was born in 1612 his eldest brother Robert was 24 years old. In fact Antoine Arnauld senior died when his son Antoine was only seven years old. He had become famous when he defended the University of Paris against the Jesuits in 1594. He was so successful in pleading the case that his speech was known as "the original sin of the Arnaulds" and considered by the Jesuits as the beginning of their battle against the Arnauld family who would later become Jansenists. Antoine Arnauld junior, the subject of this biography, would carry on his father's battle against the Jesuits.

    Antoine Arnauld
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Antoine Arnauld August 8 le grand as contemporaries called him, to distinguish him from his father — was a French Roman Catholic theologian philosopher , and mathematician The twentieth and youngest child of the original Antoine Arnauld, he was originally intended for the bar, but decided instead to study theology at the Sorbonne . Here he was brilliantly successful, and his career was flourishing when he came under the influence of Vergier , and was drawn in the direction of Jansenism . His book, De la fr©quente Communion (1643), was an important step in making the aims and ideals of this movement intelligible to the general public. Its appearance attracted controversy, and Arnauld was forced to go into hiding; for more than twenty years he dared not appear publicly in Paris During this time he produced innumerable Jansenist pamphlets . In two very outspoken Lettres a duc et pair on Jesuit methods in the confessional brought a motion to expel him from the Sorbonne. This motion was the immediate cause of

I t was a fateful day for French Roman Catholicism when in 1633 friends and family turned a student named Antoine Arnauld from law to theology. Antoine successfully defended a bachelor's thesis upholding a theory of grace based on teachings of St. Augustine. It was on the subject of grace that he became an unrelenting fighter. The grace that saves souls was only for a few people whom God had chosen, he taught, and it was irresistible. Antoine Arnauld: the logic of grace.
