Mathematicians rank Archimedes among the greatest of all time; although his contributions to physics are not quite in the same class, they, like everything Archimedes touched, are elegant, original, and important. Archimedes was born in Syracuse in southeastern Sicily, the principal Greek city-state on the island. Syracuse had a long tradition of intellectual achievement, having been for a time the home of both Aeschylus and Pindar. Nevertheless, Alexandria was the center of learning for the Hellenic world, and Archimedes is said to have studied there.

Greek mathematician who flourished in Sicily. He is generally considered to be the greatest mathematician of ancient times. Most of the facts about his life come from a biography about the Roman soldier Marcellus written by the Roman biographer Plutarch. Archimedes performed numerous geometric proofs using the rigid geometric formalism outlined by Euclid , excelling especially at computing areas and volumes using the method of exhaustion He was especially proud of his discovery for finding the volume of a sphere showing that it is two thirds the volume of the smallest cylinder that can contain it. At his request, the figure of a sphere and cylinder was engraved on his tombstone. In fact, it is often said that Archimedes would have invented calculus if the Greeks had only possessed a more tractable mathematical notation. By inscribing and circumscribing polygons on a circle for instance, he was able to constrain the value of pi ) between 3 10/71 and 3+1/7.

Archimedes (c.290/280 BC - 212/211 BC)
Archimedes was born and mainly lived in Syracuse on the eastern coast of Sicily. He is believed to have been close to Hieron II, King of Syracuse, who tried to encourage Archimedes to use his extraordinary talents for practical purposes. The King had commissioned a gold wreath that he wished to consecrate to the gods. When the wreath was delivered, it weighed the correct amount for which he had been charged. However, he was concerned that some of the gold had been replaced by an equal weight of a metal of lesser value, such as silver or lead. Because of its consecrated nature, dissection or analysis was impossible. Archimedes was presumably pondering this quandary while visiting the public baths in Syracuse. As he sank into the bath, water overflowed: the further he sank, the more water poured out. Upon realising that the amount of water displaced was a direct measure of his volume, legend has it that he leapt from the bath and ran, naked and dripping, to the King, repeatedly shouting 'Eureka' (I have found it). He knew that if he immersed the crown in water and measured the overflow, he could find its volume. Whatever its shape, if the crown were pure gold it should have an equal volume to an equal weight of pure gold, whatever shape that had. When Archimedes measured the volume of the crown it was greater than the volume of a kilo of gold, and Hieron saw that he had been cheated.

Stories from Plutarch, Livy, and others describe machines invented by Archimedes for the defence of Syracuse. These include the catapult, the compound pulley and a burning-mirror. Among Archimedes most famous works is Measurement of the Circle , in which he put the exact value of between the values 310/71 and 31/7. This he obtained by circumscribing and inscribing a circle with regular polygons having 96 sides. Archimedes greatest contributions were in geometry. His methods anticipated the integral calculus 2,000 years before Newton and Leibniz . Archimedes proved that the volume of a sphere is two-thirds the volume of a circumscribed cylinder. This he considered his most significant accomplishments, requesting that a representation of a cylinder circumscribing a sphere be inscribed on his tomb. Archimedes discovered fundamental theorems concerning the centre of gravity of plane figures and solids. His most famous theorem gives the weight of a body immersed in a liquid, called Archimedes' principal.

Archimedes was an aristocrat, the son of an astronomer, but little is known of his early life except that he studied for a time in Alexandria, Egypt. Several of his books were preserved by the Greeks and Arabs into the Middle Ages, and, fortunately, the Roman historian Plutarch described a few episodes from his life. In many areas of mathematics as well as in hydrostatics and statics, his work and results were not surpassed for over 1500 years! He found the area and tangents to the curve traced by a point moving with uniform speed along a straight line which is revolving with uniform angular speed about a fixed point. This curve, described by r = a in polar coordinates, is now called the "

Muhammed was born in 780 A.D. and died in 850 A.D. He was an Arabic mathematician who introduced the Hindu decimal system and the use of zero into Arabic mathematics. He also extended the work of Diophantis on algebraic equations in a book, the title which included the word al-jabr (transposition) from which the modern word algebra is derived. I chose this mathematician because he sounded interesting, and important to the world of mathematics. Jennifer, 1996
Archimedes of Syracuse
Although no one knows for sure, people speculate that Archimedes was born sometime around 287 B.C. As a boy he probably attended school in Alexandria, which was the center of Greek learning. After school Archimedes went to live in Syracuse, Sicily, which was then a Greek colony. Here he did much work for the king, Hiero. Archimedes made many discoveries in Math and Physics. One of his mathematical advances was with pi. Archimedes found a way to determine a more exact value of pi. He showed the value of pi was somewhere between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71. This discovery made it possible to solve many problems relating to the area of a circle and the volume of cylinders. Another invention was that of a new type of numeration system. Archimedes' new system worked much better with large numbers than the Roman and Greek systems.

ANCIENT ARCHIMEDES MANUSCRIPT Thursday October 29 2:35 PM EDT Ancient Manuscript Of Archimedes Sells For $2 Million NEW YORK (Reuters) - An ancient text by the Greek mathematical genius Archimedes sold for $2 million Thursday at Christie's, which won a last-minute court challenge over ownership to proceed with the auction. The rare 10th-century Byzantine Greek palimpsest manuscript is believed to be the oldest and most authentic copy of Archimedes' major works to survive, and contains transcriptions of his writing on geometry and physics. The bidding started at $480,000 on the work, which had a pre-sale estimate of between $800,000 and $1.2 million, and rose rapidly to the price of $2 million and a final sale price of $2,202,500 after Christie's added its commission. The sale went ahead after a court battle Wednesday night in which the Greek Orthodox Church, claiming ownership of the manuscript, failed to stop the auction. A federal judge ruled that Christie's had the right to sell the work on behalf of a French family that has had it for 75 years. The Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem sued Christie's and alleged that the 174 pages of text were stolen. The auction house argued that the current owners were descendants of a Frenchman who legally bought the volume in the 1920s.

Philosophers-Scientists
  • Epicurus of Samos (341-270 B.C.). Founder of the philosophical school of Epicurianism which, similar to the Atomists, believed that atoms are fundamental parts of the real world. Believed that fate was governed by laws of nature and not some mysterious gods.
  • Straton (Lambsacus, 340-290 B.C.). Greek physicist. Conducted experiments leading him to discover that bodies accelerate when they fall. However, erroneously, he also believes that heavier bodies fall faster. Also studied the lever, but does not find it's law. His work emphasizes the use of experimentation for scientific research. Lived in Alexandria, then moved to Athens to head the Aristitle's Lyceum after Theophrastos.
  • Zenon of Citius (4th century B.C.).

November 19, 2003The stomachion of Archimedes is a 14-piece dissection puzzle similar to the more familiar tangrams . It is described in fragmentary manuscripts attributed to Archimedes , the greatest mathematician of ancient times, by Magnus Ausonius (310-395 A.D.).
Archimedes may be known best for his alleged bathtub utterance "Eureka!" ("I have found it!"), but he also invented mathematics that was arguably at least a millennium ahead of its time. Archimedes not only invented the method of exhaustion , a technique that allows the exact computation of areas and volumes using ideas that sound very familiar to students of integral calculus , but also devised a system for representing very large numbers centuries before the place-based Hindu-Arabic system of numerals was introduced to Europe by Fibonacci in his 1202 treatise Liber Abaci Archimedes published this system of numerals in has manuscript The Sandreckoner , which was so titled because it attempted to compute the number of grains of sand it would take to fill the universe. Archimedes computed this number to be about 10

Over Archimedes
