OVERKILL: Using pesticides to control West Nile Virus mosquitoes in Maine may do more harm than good Connect to main West Nile Virus Page Connect to Maine Environmental Policy Institute's home page Executive Summary: The chemicals that are released into the environment in an effort to control mosquitoes are harmful to human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. They are also ineffective in that they kill only a limited percentage of mosquitoes, leaving sprayed communities with a false sense of security and less likely to use effective, non-toxic, control measures. There is evidence that long-term spraying may actually increase the number of mosquitoes by destroying predators that feed on mosquito larvae and adults. Mosquitoes that are sprayed but not killed by the poisons may become resistant, become more aggressive biters, and have increased prevalence of West Nile Virus (WNV) within their bodies. West Nile Virus is not a "deadly epidemic." Approximately 1 in 1000 mosquitoes in areas where WNV is endemic carry the virus, and only 1 in 300 people bitten by a WNV-carrying mosquito show any signs of sickness, and then usually only mild, flu-like symptoms. In 1999, out of a population of ten million in the New York City area, seven people died, all of whom were elderly (67-87 years) and/or immune compromised before they contracted WNV. Seven deaths in a population of over 10 million people is certainly tragic, but pales beside the number of deaths from many other diseases that are addressed less aggressively.

IRYSIUS The Cité's 75-year history The Cité internationale universitaire de Paris was created in the context of 1920's pacifism to promote exchanges between students from all over the world, providing them with lodgings and services allowing them to pursue their studies in favorable conditions. The history of the Cité began in 1920 when an important French industrialist, Emile Deutsch de la Meurthe, wishing to make an enduring contribution to society, approached the rector of the University de Paris, Paul Appell. Preoccupied by the difficulties faced by students when it came to finding lodgings, he suggested that de la Meurthe found the cité universitaire. André Honnorat, minister of public education, approved the project and devoted all of his energy to its realization for almost thirty years. To raise funds, he appealed to to bankers, industrialists, local groups and government in France and abroad. He travelled extensively to publicize the ideas behind the project. To coordinate these efforts, the Fondation nationale de la Cité internationale universitaire de Paris was created by decree on June 6, 1925. The University of Paris, which owned the property, gave the Fondation a mandate to build and administer the Cité. The Cité built and received its first student in the Fall of 1925.
