Eka-Agni Kanda Apastamba Mantrapatha Agni has always placed a central part in all of our samskaras. In general, we may divide our samskaras into two: grihya samskaras, and shrauta samskaras. The former are performed in the household fire, and the mantras used therein are found in the mantrapatha, also known as the ekagni kanda. In the Apastamba kalpasutras, the ekagni kanda forms the 25th and 26th prashnas, while the grihyasutras form the 27th prashnas. Some hold the view that these mantras predate both the rishis Apastamba and Baudhayana. i.e. they are a body of mantras presupposed by both rishis, and included in the Apastamba kalpa sutras for completeness. According to this view, the Apastamba grihya sutras presuppose the ekagni kanda, and the ekagni kanda presupposes the grihya samskaras (and do not newly establish them). A few mantras used in the Apastamba grihya sutras are not found in the ekagni kanda, but are found in the grihya sutras themselves. A few other are found in neither place. Indeed some of the mantras founde in the ekagni kanda are not found in the extant vedic corpus, although some of the mantras are variations of extant mantras. We can safely say that those who follow the sutras of Rishi Apastamba belong to the Taittireya shaka of the Krishna Yajur Veda. Of the 138 mantras occuring in the Taittireya vedic corpus, 117 mantras occur as is, and 21 are variants of mantras occuring therein. It is closely related to the grihya sutras belonging to the Krishna Yajur Veda (Baudhayana, Bharadwaja, Hiranyakeshi). Where variations of the mantras occur, all frequently make use of mantras with the same variations. Although all the sutrakarakas frequently make use of the same mantras, they are often prescribed for use in slightly different portions of the rites.

Ritual text of the Vedic tradition THE VEDAS are made known by means of the auxiliaries called Vedangas, which are six in number. Of these, Kalpa is one. The Srauta sutras belong to the Kalpa. They deal with rituals called Srauta, which only an Ahitagni (one who has established the three sacred fires) can perform. The Garhapatya, Ahavaniya and the Dakshina are the three fires. The Srauta rituals are broadly classified again as "Istis" and "Somayajnas." These again have further sub-divisions. Each of the four Vedas has its own recensions (sakhas). There are Srauta sutras attached to all these Vedic branches. Several Vedic branches are now lost. The Srauta sutra of Apastamba belongs to the Taittiriya branch of the Krishna Yajurveda. Besides Apastamba, Bharadvaja and Satyashadha-Hiranyakesin also wrote Srautasutras. The two volumes under review provide the full text of Apastamba Srauta sutra with a good, standard, reliable English translation and notes. Sage Apastamba is believed to have lived in Andhra Pradesh around 5th Century B.C. The editor observes that the language and style of the work are similar to that of classical Sanskrit. But there are peculiarities, grammatical aberrations and archaisms in the text. Some critics like Buhler including the editor, Thite are of the opinion that "ritualists were in general, deficient in their education." But one has to keep in mind the time in which this work was composed.

Women In The Sacred Laws Kulapati's Preface The Author Foreword Prologue ... Espirit Des Lois THE DHARMA SUTRAS Apastamba allows only legitimate sons to inherit their father’s estate and he explicitly forbids the sale and gift of children. Baudhayana has no scruple in prescribing the custom of Niyoga for childless widows, in order that they may get sons for offering the funeral oblations for the spirits of their dead husbands. In fact it was considered as a religious duty. Apastamba protests against this time ‘honoured custom. Baudhayana, as well as his predecessor Gautama, permits the Paisacha marriage, which Apastamba does not. The evidence of more refined and conservative opinions and the attempt to controvert the doctrines of Baudhayana show that Apastamba is later than Baudhayana, and they reflect the corresponding change in society and view of life Mahadeva, the commentator on the Dharma Sutra of Apastamba, places Bharadvaja between them, and it is probable that the distance of time between these authors was filled by a set of law givers who con tented themselves with explaining the works of their predecessors. These works are lost to us, but some of their views have been referred to by Apastamba and Baudhayana in the course of their treatises.Apastamba date has been considered to be not later than the third century B.C.

Women In The Sacred Laws Kulapati's Preface The Author Foreword Prologue ... Espirit Des Lois THE DHARMA SUTRAS This importance of initiation, which had been developed by Apastamba’s time, bad probably caused the law-giver to begin his treatise with it, as it formed the beginning of the intellectual life of a man and we find Apastamba laying down strict rules at length for such a student. It was a sin to look at a woman and sacred texts could not be uttered when a Sudra woman looked at a Brahmana. As the Dharma-Sutra of Apastamba formed a supplement to the Grhya-Sutra, we do not find the details of -marriage as they have been described in the Grhya Sastras. And, as woman’s sphere became much restricted in society, the reference to women in the general rules laid down for man is very few. Apastamba recognises six kinds of marriages as legal ; the Brahma, Arsha, Daiva, Gandharva, Asura and Rakshasa rites. Of these the first three alone the Brahma, Arsha and Daiva marriages-are praiseworthy.

    Hindu Geometry - Part 2
Continued from Part 1... Last week we saw how geometry as we know of today, took its birth in the ancient culture of Vedic Hindus of India and that it preceded its Greek counter part by at least thousand years. We also saw that the Vedic Hindus were not only expert at two dimensional or planar geometry but also were quite fluent in the theory and application of three dimensional geometry as well. In this article, I will provide a brief overview of some of the most important work on the shulba or the science of geometry by ancient Indians. Baudhyana: The shulba of Baudhyana is divided into three chapters. The first chapter contains 116 sutras or aphorisms of which two are used as an introduction to basic planar geometry. Sutras 3-21 define the various measures ordinarily employed in the science of Sulba. These sutras deal with many basic theorems of planar geometry. Sutras 22-62 give the more important of the geometrical propositions necessary for the construction of the Vedic altars. These sutras make use of the general geometric theorem explained in the earlier section. Sutras 63-116 of the shulba of Baudhyana deal mainly with the relative positions and spatial magnitudes of the various vedis or altars. The third chapter of the shulba of Baudhyana contains 323 sutras. They describe the construction of as many as seventeen different kinds of geometrical structure many of which are three dimensional in nature. While describing the process of construction, Baudhyana also states the relevant theorems and provided detailed proof for each one of them.

    Ancient History of Andhras
It is impossible to confirm the origin of a culture and the date of its origin. Different tribes, classes, and societies gradually combined over a period of time and a transformed society had evolved. This is the evolution of a society. Andhra society is one of the ancient societies of India. One can encounter several tales about Andhras in epics like Mahabharatam and Ramayanam, in great puranas, and Budhdhist Jataka Tales. This confirms the ancient nature of Andhra society. Andhras and Kalingas (ka'Limgulu) supported the Kauravas during the battle between Kauravas and Pandavas (the Bharata yudhdham). Sahadeva defeated the kingdoms of Pandya, Dravida, Odhra, Kerala, Andhra, and Kalinga while performing the Rajasooya yajna. This is depicted in the Mahabharatam. Chanoora (ca'NooruDu) was killed by Srikrishna in Madhura. Harivamsapuranam corroborates the fact that Chanoora was the king of Karoosa Desa (karooSa dESam) (on the North side of Vindhya and on the North banks of Yamuna river) and was an Anhdra (Andhrudu) too. Ramayanam depicts an interesting tale. Viswamitra condemned the "Naramedha Yagam", freed Sunassepu (SunaSSEpu, the yajna paSuvu), and adopted him as his son. Viswamitra's children diliked this act by thier father and were cursed. Then Viswamitra's children migrated towards east and south. It is understood from this tale that these children of Viswamitra were Andhras (a'mdhrulu).

    Its all about love.
Since the time I heard/read about spirituality and realization etc. I dreamed of reaching such spiritual heights. I kept on searching of an easy way out (Yes, I'm a lazy bum). So, whenever I had time, browsed through the net and read about as many concepts, practices as possible. Kundalini, Hatha Yoga, Raja Youga, Chakra Meditation, Shaktism, Tanta, Kashmir Shaivism, Kaula path, Sri Vidya Sadhana and on and on and on. First I was awed by the list and then I was confused. Of course I need to accept that the confusion still exists now.

How one becomes exalted by remaining truthful at all costs is illustrated by the story of Harischandra. The importance of the pursuit of dharma is explained through the long story of Dharmaputra [Yudhistra] in the Mahababharata. 'Matr-devobhava' and 'pitr-devobhava' Sri Rama .
