Paul Keyse r Grasping the Limits: As easy as pi In this paper, I will discuss how the understanding of infinite series gradually evolved, from Zen to Archimedes, in the twin contexts of finding areas and volumes by the "method of exhaustion" and of summing an infinite series of numbers. Zen had been puzzled to understand how an endless series of finite quantities could reach any finite total or limit (DK A25-26: Aristotle, Phys Demokritos (DK B155) (DK B13), and probably Eudoxos, sought to compute the area or volume of curvilinear figures using an endless series of rectilinear figures, e.g., to "square" the circle. This procedure Aristotle rejected as ill-founded ( Phys Soph. El Elem Archimedes, building

Altruism
David Konstan
Brown University We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person that is speaking. But I felt: you are an I
you are an Elizabeth
you are one of them Were the ancient Greeks and Romans altruistic? Is anyone? Common sense suggests that people care about others just as they do about themselves; the problem is, it also suggests the reverse. As Elliot Sober and David Sloan Wilson put it in their recent book, Unto Others: The Evolution and Psychology of Unselfish Behavior The atomized condition of modern life may in part explain this development, but responsibility must lie as well with the many authorities in philosophy, psychology, biology, and economics who hold as a matter of principle that all motives are selfish. Most of the relevant arguments are rehearsed or at least adverted to by Sober and Wilson, who seek to resolve the issue in favor of altruism by invoking considerations relating to evolution and natural selection. Their effort is not altogether successful, in my view; nor is it entirely necessary. But neither, as we shall see, is it wholly without precedent in classical antiquity. It is perfectly possible, of course, to inquire into how Greeks and Romans actually behaved. There are cultures in which generosity and sympathy are less prized or more, and comparative data on treatment of prisoners of war or the aged, for example, may reveal significant differences between one group and another. Although Greek and Roman violence toward enemies could extend as far as the extermination or enslavement of entire populations, Livy tells us that it was a point of pride with the Romans that they were particularly given to sentiments of pity toward the conquered. Hendrik Bolkestein devoted a large volume to investigating the ideal of charity among the ancient Egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks and Romans, and concluded that the democratic ethos of the classical city-state militated against concern for the poor as such.

Conceptions of Language and Reality in Euripides' Helen
      Chris Willis
Monash University) Abstract Euripides' Helen has been described variously as a comedy, a romance, a 'tragi-comedy', an anti-war protest, or some combination of these, though rarely as a tragedy in the classical sense. This paper, however, will argue that when read with an eye fixed firmly on its intellectual context the Helen is perhaps best described as a 'drama of ideas': a work in which certain themes and ideas popular in fifth-century philosophical literature are explored in engaging ways. It might be the case, indeed, that the Helen can only be understood properly when such ideas are taken into consideration. Beyond re-evaluating the Helen itself, though, this paper will also attempt to determine whether Euripides' exposition can shed light on some of the more obscure aspects of ancient philosophy. Specifically, we will examine Euripides' use of contemporary thought regarding language and its peculiar relation to the world, and how the Helen might help to illuminate the Sophistic philosophy of Protagoras, who was one of the most controversial thinkers of fifth century.
