The Broseley Anti-Felons
By JOHN CRAGG “The Anti-Felons” was the name by which they were popularly known. Their full title was “The Broseley Association for the Prosecution of Felons”. They were one of many such associations existing in the 18th, 19th and well into the 20th centuries, which originally had the sole purpose of bringing petty criminals to justice. They flourished in the days prior to the compulsory establishment of borough and county police forces. In his “Portrait of an Age Victorian England”, G.M. Young says that in 1840 there were in England “five hundred associations for the prosecution of felons; but there were no county police; and the mainstay of the public police was not the (parish) constable but the yeoman, and behind the yeoman, though cautiously and reluctantly employed, the soldier”. More than one Shropshire town had its Anti-Felon Association. Ludlow had one, rivalling Broseley’s in its long years of existence. There was one in Louth, Lincolnshire. George Eliot, in “Scenes of Clerical Life”, writing of the 1830 period, has a farmer, Mr. Hackit, “presiding at the annual dinner of the Association for the Prosecution of Felons at the Oldinfort Arms”, in the Nuneaton area. Arnold Bennett writes in “These Twain” of an architect living in the Five Towns during the late 19th century:
“Osmond Orgreave had never related himself to the crowds. He was not a Freemason; he had never had municipal office; he had never been President of the Society for the Prosecution of Felons”.

    The Anstice Working Men's Institute
An old postcard (we think from before the First World War) showing the Anstice Memorial Working Men's Institute and, on the right, the old post office and print shop formerly run by John Randall The Anstice Memorial Working Mens's Institute (now known as "The Anstice Club") stands in what is now Anstice Square (formerly the eastern end of Park Avenue). Several years after its opening in 1870 the building was badly damaged by fire, and had to be virtually rebuilt before its eventual re-opening in 1875. The construction costs were paid by the Anstice family as a memorial to John Anstice, the proprietor and manager of the Madeley Wood Company. The article below, by Chris Moore of Madeley, originally appeared in the 1990 edition of the Madeley Rest Room Review. Click here to read a local woman's memories of when the Anstice was much more than just another social club.
A HISTORY OF THE ANSTICE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE
The Anstice Memorial Institute has been the scene of many notable events in Madeley ever since it opened 120 years ago. It is situated in the centre of the town and over the years many meetings, lectures, plays and concerts have been held there. Prior to the redevelopment of the centre of Madeley in 1968 the area in front of the Institute was frequently the meeting point for parades, Sunday school demonstrations and other gatherings.

Rob Seymour's Childhood Memories of Madeley
This article was sent to us by Rob Seymour of Swansea, after we were able to send him copies of pictures showing him scenes he remembered from holidays in Madeley between the mid fifties and the early seventies. We welcome contributions from visitors to our site - contact us here. Editor's comments are in italics. Madeley Court and pool photographed late 1930s Our current homepage photo is believed to date from the 1950s During the war my Uncle's family were fortunate enough to be evacuated to Madeley to escape the air raids that Liverpool was subjected to. If my memory serves me correctly, the first house they had was an old shop premises right next to the bridge that crossed the main street in Madeley (it's still there - the last building on the right before the Foresters Arms pub, the bridge you mention was the railway bridge that carried the Wellington to Coalport branch line, now replaced by a concrete foot bridge) . I visited Madeley several years ago to attend a conference at the Court Hotel and was astonished to find the old place still standing even after all the alterations that had been made. My uncle Walter Seymour, Aunty Ivy and their children Walter, Margaret, Ronald, James and Sheila, were then given one of the council houses in Upper Rd and that is where they stayed for many years. They lived at number 56 just across the way from Jack and Ida Bailey, who some of you may remember. There was a path that led between the two houses towards the mount at the back of the house where it split in two directions, one leading to New Rd and the cinema
