The Kirov's reconstructed Sleeping Beauty
by Doug Fullington
Sleeping Beauty was first produced by the Imperial Theatres, St. Petersburg, on January 15, 1890 (January 3, Old Style) at the Maryinsky Theatre, with music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) and choreography by Marius Petipa (1818-1910). The Kirov's new production of Sleeping Beauty premiered in St. Petersburg on April 30, 1999 and made its North American premiere on June 28, 1999 at the Met in New York. Staged by Sergei Vikharev, a Kirov soloist and ballet master, with assistance from dance historian Alisa Sveshnikova, the production is an effort to reconstruct the original Sleeping Beauty of 1890 or, more precisely, Sleeping Beauty as it was performed at the turn of the century. Indeed, the importance of the Kirov's new Beauty rests on the ability of its reconstructors to recreate the original sets, costumes, music and choreography. My purpose is to evaluate the production as a reconstruction. The original costumes were designed by Ivan Vsevolozhsky (1835-1909), Director of the Imperial Theatres from 1881 to 1899 and librettist of Sleeping Beauty. His delightful and colorful designs have been beautifully rebuilt for the late-20th century Kirov bodies under the direction of Elena Zaitseva. The original sets were designed by five scenic artists who specialized in various types of décor: Genrikh Levogt (Prologue, "Florestan's Palace"), Mikhail Bocharov (Act I, "The Palace Garden," and Act II, "A Forest Locale and Panorama"), Ivan Andreev (also Act I, "The Palace Garden"), Konstantin Ivanov (Act II, "Interior of the Sleeping Beauty's Castle") and Matvei Shishkov (Act III, "The Esplanade of Florestan's Castle and Apotheosis"). These have been reproduced with equal success under the direction of Andrei Voitenko.

Today in Russia... Russia Lutheran Hour Ministries (RLHM/Konkordia) has been spreading the Gospel in word and deed throughout Russia since January 1993. It produces two Gospel-centered radio programs and five TV programs. These media efforts concentrate on bringing the Gospel and Russian history and culture together in compelling ways for a broad and diverse audience. Extensive broadcast coverage makes everyone in the former Soviet Union a potential listener to RLHM programs. Each broadcast offers an enrollment in the Bible correspondence course (BCC) and opens up opportunities for dialog with listeners based on their personal needs. An active correspondence with listeners and supporters is a major feature of the center’s work. More than 80,000 responses are received and answered each year. RLHM representatives use Russian-language materials for followup, and listeners are directly referred to meet with pastors, lay leaders, or volunteers in their area. More than 150,000 Russian Bibles for children and adults have been distributed since 1993, and more than 8,000 people have enrolled in the BCC. More than 3,365 people completed the 10-lesson study and received “Luther’s Small Catechism.”

by Eric Batchelder SARANSK, Russia: A local Russian TV producer used his time, talents and treasures to minister to sick children in the Russian city of Saransk recently, and Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) was there to help. According to LHM Russia Director Konstantin Andreev, there are many children with special needs in the city of Saransk. Some are paralyzed, suffering from heart disease or are mentally ill. So LHM decided it was time to do something to lift their spirits. "Vadim Rozhnovskiy is one of our (LHM) volunteers and is a layman in his church," Andreev said. "He is also the director of a local TV company and, through LHM, he arranged to have a special day for the invalid children of Saransk." The special day took place at the local Philharmonic building and included such events as a costume contest and games. The children also watched LHM cartoons like "The Puzzle Club." "About 60 children attended the event along with their parents," Andreev said. "And many gave us their address to receive more information about LHM. From what we’ve heard from Vadim, the children and their parents left feeling very happy."

"Yney"
"Yney"
(means "hoar-frost") is the combination of three outstanding musicians - Jury Orlov, Igor Shaposhnikov and Andrew Kireev . All of them are so original by themselves that they are worth a story apart.
Jury Orlov
Jury Orlov (1964) - composer, musician, poet and animator appeared on Russian music scene in 1983 and immediately attracted everybody's attention with his first steps in the field of his career as a professional musician, as these steps had strongly pronounced avant-gardish character - participation in Andrew Suchilin's legendary session project "Do Major" (1984-85), co-operation with St. Petersburg's experimental rock-group "Jungle" (1984), collaboration works with "New Composers" and avant-garde sessions under the name "Nikolay Kopernik" together with musicians of "Do Major" and "Lunar Piero" Nevertheless this brilliant avant-garde start was superseded by Jury's insuperable romantic mood which as a result had led to the creation of new neo-romantic project "Nikolay Kopernik"

From Anti-Westernism to Anti-Semitism
by Konstantin Azadovskii and Boris Egorov Journal of Cold War Studies, 4:1, Winter 2002, pp. 66-80 In the Soviet Union the "anti-cosmopolitan" campaigns of the late 1940s and early 1950s were a taboo subject for many years afterward. Even during the "thaw" under Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet publications made no mention of the campaigns. Only with the advent of glasnost under Mikhail Gorbachev in the late 1980s was the topic finally discussed in Soviet newspapers and journals, beginning with an article in the journal Zvezda. This initial article was followed by numerous other articles and discussions on Soviet television, which brought to light new information about the events of 1948-1949. Those events, spurred initially by the anti-Western thrust of Soviet policy during the early Cold War, are the subject of this article. The article will trace the origins and evolution of the anti-cosmopolitan campaigns and will then recount the purge of the Philological Faculty at Leningrad State University in 1948-1949. The events in Leningrad provided a microcosm of what was occurring in the Soviet Union at large. This episode is useful in showing how the external demands on Soviet foreign policy during the opening years of the Cold War contributed to changes in Soviet internal policy and an intensification of domestic repression.
