Musicians in the band
The musicians in RBB, current as of november 2004.
Repertoire Randers Big Band's repertoire is extensive and eclectic, ranging from time-honored classics from the big band libraries of the Basie, Ellington, and Woody Hermann bands to slightly "newer" compositions by the likes of Thad Jones, Stan Kenton, and Bill Holmann, and including charts by many of today's top arrangers - names like Bob Mintzer, Tom Kubis, Bob Florence and many others. A well-rounded band Randers Big Band is a group of many talents - talents honed in an impressive range of performance situations both in Denmark and abroad. You name it, we've played at it - the band has extensive experience with performing at: festivals, festival/theme weeks, jazz luncheons, big band dances/balls, big birthday bashes, company parties, Christmas gatherings, receptions and, of course traditional big band concerts.
A look back
Activities
Through the years, Randers Big Band has played at countless music festivals here at home as well as abroad, and the band has brought its swinging show on the road, too, with tours to Finland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland and the USA. And in addition to ordinary big band concerts, the band is wont to blow its collective horn at jazz luncheons, big birthday bashes, music festivals, dances/balls, receptions, company parties and - lest we forget, the New Years concert on January 1st , a concert rich in tradition, held each year in Værket Auditorium in Randers. Plus, the band has arranged workshops and performances with a veritable "whoÕs who" of big-name artists from Denmark and abroad.

Figure 5. P. Regnard's combination photometer and photometric recording device. Invented by Paul Regnard in 1888 for measuring the intensity and duration of lig light with increasing depth. It was used by Prince Albert aboard a steam tug off Funchal at depths of 20, 30, and 40 meters. The balloon pressure device was not part of the original instrument but added afterwards. Figure 6. P. Regnard hydrochloric acid tube designed by Paul Regnard about 1889 to study the chemical action of light in oceanic waters. Figure 7. E. von Petersen's photometer. Left: device before opening. Middle: device during exposure. Right: device after closing. This device was invented in 1886 by Eugen von Petersen, an engineer at the Naples zoological station. The design follows the specifications of Carl Chun. The first test of this ins trument was by Carl Chun off Capri in 250 meters water depth. Figure 8. L. Linsbauer's photometer. Left: a picture of the unit. Right: a picture of the internal photometer mechanism. This instrument was invented by Ludwig Linsbauer for use in fresh water. It was used in Lake Traunsee in the northern part of Austria in 1904 at small depths. Figure 9. W. F. Ewald's photometer. The photometer is inverted with the lens uncovered. Invented by Wolfgang F. Ewald about 1908. An earlier instrument of this type is not part of the museum collection. The test of the original was in a lake near Munich and then in a fjord near Bergen.

The pole planimeter
This instrument, invented by Jacob Amsler (1835-) was used for computing the area enclosed by a closed curve.
The arm OB (first figure below) has a pivot point in O which is fixed to the paper. In our Siemens planimeter (top figure), O is a sharp point pressed into the paper by a weight.
Point B, which can describe a circle around O, rests in turn on a point of the arm AC. Point A is is moved by the user along the curve drawn on the paper. The other end of this arm rests on the paper with a steel wheel W, the axis of which is accurately parallel to AC. (In the Siemens planimeter, W is on the other side of A; also there is a supporting wheel perpendicular to W). The rotation of W can be measured accurately with the help of a division on its rim and a revolution counter. If AC is moved in its own direction, W slips over the paper without turning. However any movement component n normal to AC leads to a proportional rotation of W. If the original position of the arm is AB (next figure), and if it is moved to the nearby position A'B', then we have
if higher order terms are neglected (l is the length of AB).

This, however, is not, as most moderns suppose, because they are members of a rival faction and thus - in accord with ancient royal practice - to be done away with, but rather, as perceived by Abrabanel, because they will be considered guilty of particular offences: Bathsheba of adultery and Solomon, as her son, as unfit to rule. Thus, Bathsheba's plea to the dying David is that Solomon may reign, so that her sin - and David's - may remain undisclosed. (B.J.S.) C. M. MD PATIENTS ASK?
What is Drusen?
Macular drusen are localized deposits that are lodged between the macula and the retinal layers. Quoting from Dr. Robert D'Amato's book, Macular Degeneration, "Current scientific thought suggests that drusen represent the buildup of waste material from cells, which in a perfectly healthy eye would be removed naturally by the body. Just as your morning shower washes away dead cells from your skin, blood flow in a healthy eye washes away waste from photoreceptor cells in the retina. But this process functions abnormally when the eye is diseased with macular degeneration; therefore drusen build up in the retina."

HName: Neumann, Carl, [sometimes Karl] DateBorn: 1860 Placeborn: Mannheim, Germany Datedied: 1934 Placedied: Heidelberg, Germany HDescrip: University of Heidelberg professor of art; wrote first full monograph on Rembrandt (1906). Neumann was the son of a wealthy Jewish mercantile family. In 1878 he entered the university in Heidelberg to study history. In 1880 he switched to Berlin, attending the lectures of Nitsch and the historian Heinrich von Treitschke (1834-1896). He returned to Heidelberg in 1882 to receive his Ph.D. with a dissertation topic on Bernhard von Clairvaux and the beginnings of the second crusade. Neumann went to Basel to hear the lectures Jacob Burckhardt (q.v.), which turned his interest to art history. At the end of the 1880 Neuman began displaying signs of mental illness, depression and long hospital stays. He spent 1882 studying classical art at the Glyptothek in Munich. It was around this time that Neumann also became devoted to modern art. His book Der Kampf um die neue Kunst (The Struggle for New Art) was published in 1892. Neumann's preference was for the classicizing tendencies of artists such as Anselm Feuerbach. Between 1884 and1887 Neumann made several journeys to Italy. He converted to Protestantism (from Judiasm) in 1887. In 1894 he completed his
