American Theories of Polygenesis
Introduction
Monogenesis, as the term was understood by natural historians in the middle of the nineteenth century, was the theory that all human beings shared the same origin. Polygenesis, by contrast, was the theory that at least some of the races had a separate origin. Because the Bible had been almost universally understood as maintaining that all human beings were descended from a single pair, there had been few upholders of polygenesis in Christian Europe throughout most of its history. However, in the middle of the nineteenth century polygenesis became widespread, particularly in the United States. Part of the reason for this was the problem of reconciling the biblical account with certain new pieces of historical and scientific evidence. Prae-Adamitae was published in 1655, but within a year of publication, he was forced to recant. However, the persistence of his ideas is shown by the fact that Matthew Hale thought it necessary to address them in 1677 in his The Primitive Origination of Mankind, Considered and Examined According to the Light of Nature

THE BIOLOGICAL-ROMANTIC MYSTIQUE
In the play Harvey , Elwood P. Dowd declares that he struggled with reality all his life and finally overcame it. I think he was speaking for all of us. How we overcome sexual reality is a case in point.
Let's begin with the question facing our panel: What is sex for? The first answer that most people give is that sex is for procreation. Now suppose that we were to point out the unreality of this answer by suggesting that if the purpose of sex was procreation there would be no way to account for our experience of year 'round estrus since procreation is efficiently accomplished in infrahuman species even when limited to one month out of the year. (Homosexuality, if cited as an example of nonprocreative sex, would only be dismissed as an aberration.)
This would cause our respondents no difficulty, of course. They would simply reply (much as they would about homosexuality) that these are

Home Instruments Books MarketWatch ... Catalogue CHARLES DAVIES, Elements of Surveying Davies' Surveying was first published in book form in 1830. It was originally written as a series of lecture notes for use by the Cadets at West Point. At that time, the Military Academy was one of the foremost schools for mathematics in the country. For this reason the book was directed towards more-highly educated readers than were other works of the period. The book's two introductory chapters on mathematics offer instruction in logarithms and plane trigonometry, but not geometry. The continuing chapters provide details about the principal surveying instruments then in use. These were the telescopic theodolite, compass, level, plain table, cross, and a number of computing and drafting scales. Practical instruction is also given in determining area, general surveying, topography and harbor surveying. Numerous working examples are included, with corresponding illustrations appearing in the rear on nine folded plates. The plates also have detailed engravings of the various instruments. One of the examples in the 1830 text involves surveying a large tract of land using four different instruments. The theodolite is utilized for overall horizontal control, the compass and cross for fill-in work, and the plane table for adding topographic features. The book was so well received at the Academy that Davies rewrote the entire text to make it suitable for general distribution.

University Kicks Off Its Year-Long Party
October 20, 2003 After half a semester of wind-up, Columbia kicked off its 250th anniversary celebration this weekend, with three days of a activities designed to satisfy all of the various Columbia affiliates attending. Although the weekend featured events ranging from a birthday party for Alma Mater to a video of various celebrities wishing the University happy birthday, some unfortunately fell flat. When it turned out that the giant cake in the shape of Low Library was made mostly of plywood, and that the headline act of the weekend's finale concert had cancelled at the last minute, many students were left with a vague sense of anti-climax. But this weekend's festivities were only the beginning of a year-long celebration comprised of parties, discussions, and other forms of self-congratulation. So if the opener left you wanting more, don't worryit's on its way. And for those of you who missed the festivities, here's a wrap-up of the main events. Happy Birthday, Alma Mater!

History of Undergraduate Mathematics in America At the HUMA meeting, we will have two book displays. The first will be held in the West Point Room on the fourth floor of the library (the building is across the street from Thayer Hall; enter via the "gun door," so named because it is bracketed by the first cannon fired during the Civil war, and the last). A few of the books below were chosen for their rarity, beauty, and mathematical significance, but most of them were chosen because of the impact they have had on undergraduate education. You can access the West Point library on the web by

PAY WARM TRIBUTE TO TWAIN'S MEMORY Throng at Carnegie Hall Hears Humorous Stories of the Humorist and Philosopher.
HIS OLD FRIENDS THERE
Choate, Cannon, Howells, Twichell, and Others Give Reminiscences of His Life Here and Abroad.
Nearly 5,000 persons packed Carnegie Hall last night to honor the memory of Mark Twain. While almost every one of prominence in the literary life and activity of the Eastern half of the country was present, there were many others besides, representing business, finance, and all the professions. The gathering was one of the most distinguished brought together here in years. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Joseph G. Cannon - "Uncle Joe," as Mark Twain always called him, even to his face - was one of the principal as well as one of the most delightful speakers, his talk overflowing with good stories about his friend. Champ Clark of Missouri, minority leader in he present Congress and slated to succeed Mr. Cannon as Speaker in the next, was another to pay Mark Twain tribute. Others who spoke were his old friend, William Dean Howells, who was chosen to preside; Joseph H. Choate, Henry Watterson, whom Mark Twain, like many others, called "Marse Henry," when he didn't call him "Cousin Henry," as they were connected by marriage; the Rev. Dr. Joseph H. Twichell of Hartford, the humorist's old pastor and intimate friend; George W. Cable and Henry Van Dyke, the latter reading a poem entitled "Mark Twain," written for the occasion.
