ampere
An ampere is a unit of measure of the rate of electron flow or current in an electrical conductor. One ampere of current represents one coulomb of electrical charge (6.24 x 10 charge carriers) moving past a specific point in one second. Physicists consider current to flow from relatively positive points to relatively negative points; this is called conventional current or Franklin current. The ampere is named after Andre Marie Ampere, French physicist (1775-1836).

André-Marie Ampère January 22 June 10 ), was a French physicist who is generally credited as one of the main discoverers of electromagnetism . The ampere unit of measurement of electric current is named after him. He was born at Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'or , near Lyons and took a passionate delight in the pursuit of knowledge from his very infancy, and is reported to have worked out long arithmetical sums by means of pebbles and biscuit crumbs before he knew the figures. His father began to teach him Latin , but ceased on discovering the boy's greater inclination and aptitude for mathematical studies. The young Ampère, however, soon resumed his Latin lessons, to enable him to master the works of Euler and Bernoulli When Lyons was taken by the army of the Convention in , the father of Ampère, who, holding the office of juge de paix had stood out resolutely against the previous revolutionary excesses, was at once thrown into prison and soon after perished on the scaffold. This event produced a profound impression on André-Marie's susceptible mind, and for more than a year he remained sunk in apathy. Then his interest was aroused by some letters on botany which fell into his hands, and from botany he turned to the study of the classic poets, and to the writing of verses himself. In he met Julie Carron, and an attachment sprang up between them, the progress of which he naïvely recorded in a journal (Amorum). In

I had no sooner landed in France to enjoy a little of the wines and sunshine over there when I heard of a chap in Paris who is playing with wires and the recent discovery of electricity. All sounded rather far fetched and dangerous to me but thought that while I was here. We met in a small wine bar and Ampere went on to say that he had seen a demonstration by Hans Christian Oersted a little while ago at the French Academy that showed that a compass needle is moved when an electric current moves through a nearby wire. Impressive huh.

André Marie Ampère
The French mathematician and physicist André Marie Ampère (1775-1836) was born in Lyon. This scientist is considered as one of the founders of the theory of electricity. The ampere, the unit of electric current, is named after him.
The principle of Ampère is used in electromotors and generators, which are applied in many apparatus used in our daily life.
Ampère discovered, that two parallel current wires, repel or attract each other depending on the fact the current flows through the wires in the same or in opposite direction.
The wonder of magnetism was very attractive for Ampère, because he did much scientific work on this subject.
In his studies he tried to bring magnetism in connection with the behaviour of atoms. He also drew up laws about magnetism within electrical fields.
Ampère was not only a great physician: he was a very important mathematician as well.

In July 1820 Hans Christian Oersted observed that a current passing through a wire produced a magnetic field that could deflect a compass needle. By September news of the discovery had reached Paris where Ampere repeated and continued Oersteds work. This lead to the development of the first instruments for measuring the flow of electricity in a conductor. top of page home page

Laws of Electrodynamics
Andre Marie Ampere (AD 1775-1836), quickly following up on Oersted's annoucement of electromagnetism , was able to define the relationship between the direction of electric flow and the deflection of a magnetic needle. Among his laws of electrodynamics are: 1) parallel conductors currying currents in th the same direction are attacted to each other and 2) parallel conductors carrying currents in the opposite directions are repelled from each other. He also suggest that electromagnetism could be used in telegraphy. He used a highly sensitive galvanometer to make his measurements. A galvanometer is a device used to detect and measure the flow of electricity. A simple galvanometer is a compass with a wire wrapped around it. Connect either end of the wire to whatever you want to test (such as a battery) if the needle is deflected then a current has been created. The stronger the current the greate the needle will be deflated. Fun Word Fact: An ampere or amp is one unit of an electric current.

Home Teachers Contact Us Help! ... Credits Science Andre Marie Ampere Ampere was born in France in 1775. He was educated in Latin, French literature and science by his father. He was a good student, but soon discovered that his father did not know as much about mathematics as the young Ampere wanted, so he found a monk in Lyon who would teach him calculus. His father was guillotined after the siege of Lyon during the French revolution, and so Ampere had to find a job. He started teaching mathematics in Lyon, then in Bourg, and then was made Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. It was when he was in Paris that he started to research physics and chemistry too. He identified fluorine and went on to classify many of the other chemical elements known at that time. He also thought that light was in waveform, (which we now know to be true) not particle form, as had been previously suggested. He did a lot of work on the refraction of light (when it appears to bend, whilst looking into water). After hearing about a combined theory of electricity and magnetism, Ampere went on to research in this field. He discovered electrodynamic (movement by electricity) forces very quickly and wrote a scientific paper about it soon after. He went on to do more research in this field, but it was Faraday, researching at the same time, who is given the credit for discovering electro magnetic induction.
