Ampere
The SI unit of Electric current
The ampere is that constant current which, if maintained in two straight parallel conductors of infinite length, of negligible circular cross-section, and placed 1 metre apart in vacuum, would produce a force between the conductors equal to 2x10 newton per metre of length.

The official symbol is A

Named after the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775-1836), one of the pioneers in studying electricity.

The other electrical units are all defined in terms of the ampere:

  • One ampere represents a current flow of one coulomb of charge per second.

One ampere of current results from a potential distribution of one volt per ohm of resistance.

BIOGRAPHY
Ampere, Andre Marie:
AMPERE, Andre Marie (1775-1836), French scientist, known for his important contributions to the study of electrodynamics. Ampere, the son of a Lyon city official, was born in Polemieux-auMont-d'Or, near Lyon. The ampere, the unit of electric current, is named after him. His electrodynamic theory and his views on the relationship of electricity and magnetism were published in his Recueil d'observations electrodynamiques (Collection of Observations on Electrodynamics, 1822) and in his Theorie des phenomenes electrodynamiques (Theory of Electrodynamic Phenomena, 1826). Ampere invented the astatic needle, which made possible the modern astatic galvanometer. He was the first to show that two parallel conductors carrying currents traveling in the same direction attract each other and, if traveling in opposite directions, repel each other.

Andre Marie Ampere Andre Marie Ampere was born in 1775 in Polemieux-au-mont-d’Or near Lyon. Ampere spent much of his childhood in Lyon with his father, Jean-Jacques Ampere. In 1782 though, Jean-Jacques decided that Andre needed to concentrate on his studies. To accommodate for this need, they moved permanently to Polemieux.
Andre Marie Ampere's Life Although Andre never attended school, he received an excellent education. His father did help him in his studies, but he was mostly self-directed, reading articles from L’Encyclopedie for entertainment.
It had been said that Andre mastered all known mathematics by age 12, but this is an exaggeration, for he did not formally study mathematics until age 13. Andre poured himself over his studies of mathematics and soon began to create his own theories and ideas.
While Ampere was still only 13, he attempted to publish a paper to the Academie de Lyon. Due to the fact that he did not study calculus, his paper was not published, but this would prove to be a turning point in his life. Ampere discovered that he needed to learn more math, so again he turned to L’Encyclopedie and d’Alembers article on Calculus. Ampere took calculus lessons from a monk in Lyon and began to study works by Euler, Bernoulli, and Lagrange’s Mecanique analytique. Ampere was surely on the way of becoming a great mathematician.

Ampere, Andre Marie
French physicist and mathematician, developed the connection between electricity and magnetism Born 1775 AD [ Lyon, France ]
Died 1836 AD [ Marseille, France ] Background
His father was a wealthy merchant in Lyon. Ampere had a passion for mathematics and a photographic memory. A librarian informed him that the works of great scientists like Euler and Bernoulli were in Latin, so he learned Latin by age 12. At the age of 18 his life was torn apart by the French Revolution when his father was guillotined because he was a Justice of the Peace in the ancient regime. When Ampere was 28, his first wife died during childbirth, so much pain at an early age. In his early career, he study several subjects like philosophy, psychology and chemistry. He independently arrived at Avogadro number. Wire and a magnet
In 1819, Hans Christian Orsted, placed a magnet needle next to a current carrying wire and the needle defected. This discovery indicated that there was a connection between electricity and magnetism. When Ampere learned of the discovery, he too examined it further and created a right hand rule for determining the direction in which the needle deflected.

Andre Marie Ampere is best known for defining a way to measure the flow of current, which was named after him, the ampere. He also laid the foundation for the science of electrodynamics. Ampere was a French physicist and science teacher who lived from 1775-1836. Among his accomplishments was figuring out a way to measure the strength of a magnetic field in relation to an electric current, known as Ampere's theorem. Ampere's law is a rule that deals with the mutual interaction of current-carrying wires.

His father began to teach him Latin, but ceased on discovering the boy's greater inclination and aptitude for mathematical studies. The young Ampère, however, soon resumed his Latin lessons, to enable him to master the works of Euler and Bernoulli. In later life he was accustomed to say that he knew as much about mathematics when he was eighteen as ever he knew; but his reading embraced nearly the whole round of knowledgehistory, travels, poetry, philosophy and the natural sciences. When Lyons was taken by the army of the Convention in 1793, the father of Ampère, who, holding the office of juge de paix had stood out resolutely against the previous revolutionary excesses, was at once thrown into prison and soon after perished on the scaffold. This event produced a profound impression on Andre-Marie's susceptible mind, and for more than a year he remained sunk in apathy. Then his interest was aroused by some letters on botany which fell into his hands, and from botany he turned to the study of the classic poets, and to the writing of verses himself.

Andre Marie Ampere, Mathematician
We can scarcely believe that Ampère really discovered the law of action by means of the experiments which he describes. We are led to suspect, what, indeed, he tells us himself, that he discovered the law by some process which he has not shown us, and that when he had afterwards built up a perfect demonstration he removed all traces of the scaffolding by which he had raised it. James Clerk Maxwell While riding in a carriage to a meeting at the Academy in Paris, Ampere was struck by a brilliant notion which he immediately jotted down: dH=ipdl/r^2 (in which p is the perpendicular distance from P to the line of the element dl; or DH = i sin dl/r2). Upon his arrival, Ampere paid the driver, ran into the building to share his discovery, and promptly realized that he had written his notes on the inside of the carriage itself. After an extensive search of the streets of Paris, Ampere's runaway equation was found. http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Ampere.html http://america3.pcs.cnu.edu/~gwebb/49w3ampere.htm Andre Ampere, born in France in 1775, was ultimately responsible for developing the new and powerful model of electrodynamics, the union of electricity and magnetism.
