Stand: 01.04.05

Alhazen - Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham
Arab physicist and pioneer of optics. Born 965 AD [ Basra, Iraq ]
Died 1040 AD [ Cairo, Eygpt ] Background
Alhazen, also known as al-Basri, meaning that he came from the city of Basri in present day Iraq but he is also know as al-Misri indicating that he originated from Egypt. Little is know of his personal life but he did write an autobiography in 1027 which survives to this day, but deals mainly with his science. Early in his life he studied the conflicting religious views of the time and came to the realization that none of them represented the truth
Optics
One of Alhazen major works was Optics, dealing with lenses, mirrors, the eye, colour and even camera obscura (pinhole camera). Up to this time, the ancient Greeks like Euclid and Ptolemy believed that light was emitted by the eye but Alhazen stated that light reflected off objects and the light rays entered the eye. Nile Flood
At the time, the Nile had devastating annual flood and Alhazen had the idea to regulate the flow of water down the Nile. Egypt at that time was ruled by al-Hakim the Fatimid caliph, he requested Alhazen to come to Egypt and carry out the changes to the Nile. Alhazen made a survey of the Nile and realized that it was not possible to regulate the floods. Fearing for his life from the hand of al-Hakim he decided to pretend to be mad and was confined to his house until the death of al-Hakim in 1021.

Signs enter optical theory in relation to visual recognition. Alhazen's treatment of signs is scattered throughout books 1 and 2 of the Optics.(109) No definition is given, but signs are always associated with recognition by memory or "prior cognition" (cognitio antecedens or praecedens).(110) Prior cognition takes two forms. The first involves recognition of objects; the second, recognition of visual properties.

Essay Two: Arabic Studies in Physics and Astronomy During 800 - 1400 AD
After the fading of the ancient Greeks, the next steps in science were taken in a different society. Muslim armies, which had been unified by Mohammed's doctrine, began their conquest in 636. The Muslims seized Syria, Iraq, Mesopotamia and Egypt. Their influence extended through Turkey, North Africa, Spain and as far east as the borders of China. The Arabs absorbed ideas from mathematics, astronomy and other sciences from the cultures and regions they conquered. By the year 750 the wars had subsided and a time of relative peace existed. Scholars from different regions gathered in Baghdad and caliph Al Mamun established a House of Wisdom in the city. At this time many Greeks texts were translated into Arabic for the first time. Most of the Arabs' work was in the field of mathematics and astronomy but there was also significant advances made in physics. This paper will limit itself in discussing advances in the two latter fields.
Al-Sabi Thabit ibn Qurra al-Harrani (826-901) revised many of the translated Greek works and was one of the first reformers of Ptolemy's system. He wrote Kitab

The deeper lesson of Alhazen This special historical issue of Perception concerns the neglect of vision work in other times and other places. The contents fall into two groups: the writings of Ptolemy and Alhazen in Egypt many centuries ago, and the more recent writings of nineteenth and early twentieth century German scholars. I will take Alhazen and Wallach to represent these two time frames. As regards the former, we are indebted to Ian Howard for his provocative reminder of the groundbreaking work of Alhazen. In Alhazen we find an astonishing range of insights that we have been in the habit of crediting to far more recent Westerners. Some six hundred years before Galileo he was conducting experiments, even psychophysical experiments. His work provided the basis for Kepler's correct explanation of the formation of retinal images as the first stage of vision, surely a cornerstone of the entire modern discipline of visual perception. It was the apparent discrepancy between the properties of retinal images and the properties of the visual world that demanded explanation, animating the field of visual perception then and now. How could so important a figure have been so badly neglected? If Alhazen is obscure in our field, the same cannot be said of Hans Wallach, who is known for many elegant experiments. In his study of the kinetic depth effect Wallach established a new depth cue-motion-in such a characteristically convincing way that his claim has never even been challenged. First, he showed that the display appeared to have depth only when in motion, while any stationary view appeared flat. Second, because the stimulus was in fact a flat silhouette, most depth cues were ruled out as causal factors even though they were not excluded from the laboratory conditions.

It says right there on the page.It would imply extraction of cube root. It's the same as other problems in th history of mathematics and especially the trisection of an angle and the famous Delic problem, the one with the doubling of the cube. Try searching for this problem to the referenced bibliography (the 3 books mentioned there).I'm sure you'll e given a plausible mathematically rigurous explnation.

Alhazen
