Alhazen

Tue 30 August 2005 Home Science Alhazen Alhazen father of optical physiology Ibn Haythan known in the western world as Al Hazen , the great scientist of the end of the Xth century probably born in 965 in Basra (Persian gulf) from where he left for cairo where he was officially posted as the officer and doctor of the ismailis Fatimid Kalifat He was a great astronomer, mathematician and physician. He wrote more than sixty books on different subjects. In all his work, the book on optics was a great revelation in the history of science. In his work he embraces all the subjects of the optics including the optical physiology. His work includes a study on the reflection and refraction with realised experiments with the help of different mirrors (spherical, parabolics , cylindrical, concave and convex). A study on the magnifying glass, reasearch on shade, colors, rainbow and a discussion on light, that is the first philosophical scientific treaty on vision. Optics in the western world before Alhazen From the Vth century before JC, a research between the eye and the seen object where the light as the principal actor was the main discussion because that light links the object to the eye if today everyone adopts this theory without having a single thought about it and taking it as an evident reality, it is in fact a result of work and discussion of two thousand years.

Alhazen
Alhazen Abu Ali al-Hasan Ibn Al-Haitham (also: Ibn al Haythen ), was an Arab mathematician ; he is sometimes called al-Basri , after his birthplace. He was born at Basra , then part of Buwayhid Persia , now part of Iraq (See ), and probably died in Cairo Egypt . There is another Alhazen who translated Ptolemy 's Almagest in the 10th century. One version of his career has him summoned to Egypt by the mercurial caliph Hakim to regulate the flooding of the Nile . After his field work made him aware of the impracticability of his scheme, and fearing the caliph's anger, he feigned madness . He was kept under house arrest until Hakim's death in . During this time he wrote scores of important mathematical treatises. Alhazen was a pioneer in optics engineering and astronomy . According to Giambattista della Porta , he first explained the apparent increase in the size of the moon and sun near the horizon, although Roger Bacon gives the credit of this discovery to Ptolemy . He taught that vision does not result from the emission of rays from the eye, and wrote on the refraction of light, especially on atmospheric refraction, for example, the cause of morning and evening twilight. He solved the problem of finding the point on a convex mirror at which a ray coming from one point is reflected to another point.
