31. Avet Terterian: Editorial
alexander alexandroff in Munich, composer and bassoonplayer, works on a filmwith music by Terterian. With these pages, I want to promote Avet Terterian
http://www.terterian.org/editorial.html
Please let me tell you, why these pages exist:
I am dedicating these pages to the memory of Avet Terterian, the armenian composer. I offer this Site to all of you who want to contribute. The Terterian-Foundation will find it's place here as well.
Avet Terterian (1929 - 1994) and his music is not very known in the western music world. His music was not played so often, fame came too late, in his case. The first CD with his 3rd and 4th Symphony was released in 1997 by a british company, some records of his concerts are hard to find in Russia, although Melodya published some of his work.
I heard his music first in Ekaterinburg, february 1992. We were invited to take part in the general rehearsal of "Versi II" , a ballet, danced by "Provincialni Tansi" and directed by Lev Shulman . The music was so unexpected, perfect and touching, the movements of the dancers fitted so perfectly, that we left the Cultural Palace UralMash silently, emotionally moved and shaken.
This music was by Avet Terterian, as we learned.
From this time, I tried to listen to music, to find records. Finally, some russian friends presented us the Symphony #3, a Melodya record. We hunted all record shops we saw in Russia, but the records were sold out.

April 29. Ju Wang, of the Institute of Software, Academia Sinica, Beijing. Definabilities and Finite Base Theorems, A research survey.
  • Find some common nature of those varieties which have a finite base. To be specific, we look into the definabilities of principal congruences, something every principal congruence in those varieties should have.
  • Search for a general mothed.
  • Form some general finite base theorems. For example, the following two syntactical theorems are plausible:
  • If A is finite, V(A) is meet semi-distributive, and has a definable SI class, then V(A) is finitely based.
  • If A is finite and V(A) is congruence-modular with a definable SI class, then V(A) is finitely based. (I) and (II) would cover the major finite base theorems we investigated. April 27. Beifang Chen , of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Kowloon Counting Cohesive Geometric Objects. Mathematics started with counting. Cantor knew how to count an infinite number of objects, but was finally mad when counting uncountable sets. Fortunately, Euler and Poincare taught us how to count cohesive objects, including some of those uncoutable sets. In this talk I will present a combinatorial theory on geometric measures, a typical connection between combinatorics and other branches of mathematics from the counting point of view. April 26.

Abstract: Frames in Hilbert spaces play a major role in many areas such as signal processing, image and data compression etc. We will survey many of the uses (both concrete and abstract) of modern frame theory. In the process, we will look at some recent advances in the area as well as some of the important open questions. (Refreshments afterward in SC-1425.)

    • 4:10 pm, room SC-1431. Colloquium: Alexander Dranishnikov , of the University of Florida , will speak about "Alexandroff's Problem and the Novikov Conjecture." Abstract: In late 20s P.S. Alexandroff came with a definition of the cohomological dimension and he posed the natural problem: Does the cohomological dimension agree with the standard (covering) dimension for compact metric spaces? This problem has a long history. It was finally solved only in late 80s. Recently a shadow of the Alexandroff problem appeared in the coarse approach to the Novikov higher signatures conjecture

    Arhangel'skii's solution to Alexandroff's problem: a survey
    by
    Richard Hodel
Duke University In 1969 Arhangel'skii solved an almost 50-year old problem published by Alexandroff and Urysohn in 1923 by proving the every Hausdorff first-countable Lindelof space has cardinality at most the continuum. In fact he proved that the cardinality of X (X Hausdorff) cannot be greater than exp(L(X)k(X)). In my talk I will survey a wide variety of generalizations and variations of this beautiful inequality. Date received: June 2, 2003 Atlas Conferences Inc. Document # cajv-42.
