Archie Alexander 's father was Price Alexander who was a janitor in Ottumwa while his mother was Mary Hamilton. Archie was born into a African-American family that lived in an area of Ottumwa which was set aside for poor people, and of course this meant that he would not be expected to have an education. It took the remarkable person that Archie was, together with strong support from his parents, to overcome these disadvantages, both from prejudice against someone of his race and against someone from a poor working class background, and go on to a life filled with achievements. When Archie was eleven years old his family moved from Ottumwa to live on a small farm on the outskirts of Des Moines. He had the advantage of being able to attend a school in Des Moines which was open to both white and black students and in 1905, at the age of seventeen, he graduated from Oak Park High School in Des Moines. Alexander's parents were far too poor to be able to afford to send him to College to study further, yet Alexander was determined to continue his education. To allow him to study at Highland Park College in Des Moines, Alexander took on some poorly paid part-time jobs and his parents also helped out as much as they could. In addition he attended Cummins Art College in Des Moines before entering the University of Iowa in 1908 to study engineering.

*On this date in 1888, Archie Alexander was born. He was an African-American design and construction engineer.
From Ottumwa, Iowa, Archie Alphonso Alexander's father, Price, was a janitor in Ottumwa; his mother’s name was Mary. Archie was born into an African-American family that lived in an area of Ottumwa which was set aside for poor people, and of course this meant that he would not be expected to have an education. When Archie was eleven years old his family moved to a small farm on the outskirts of Des Moines. In 1905, he graduated from Oak Park High School in Des Moines.
To study at Highland Park College in Des Moines, Alexander took on some poorly paid part-time jobs and his parents also helped out as much as they could. In addition he attended Cummins Art College in Des Moines before entering the University of Iowa in 1908 to study engineering. He was the only Black student in the College and, his advisor at university had bluntly told him that “a Negro could not hope to succeed as an engineer”... and after he graduated in 1912 he discovered that his race prevented him from being appointed to any of the engineering posts to which he made application.
Alexander decided that if he could not find an engineering post then he would join a firm as a laborer and work his way up. He started with the Marsh Engineering Company and in two years was in charge of the Marsh Engineering Company's bridge building program in Iowa and Minnesota. After two years with the Marsh Engineering Company, he left to form his own engineering company. Few would willingly give a major engineering contract to a firm run by an African-American if there were other firms able to do the work. As a consequence, Alexander's company ended up with the jobs for which no other firm competed.

    Engineer
Archie Alexander refused to let racial barriers prevent him from becoming a successful engineer and presidential appointee. Alexander was born in Ottumwa, the son of a coachman who moved his family to Des Moines when Alexander was 12. The boy attended Oak Park Elementary and Oak Park High, and then Highland Park College before enrolling at the University of Iowa, where he was one of the school's first African-American football players. He earned an engineering degree in 1912, and then worked for a bridge-building firm in Des Moines before launching his own business in 1914 with a friend, George Higbie, who was white.

MacIntyre's of Cape Breton Maclntyre (CLANN A’GHARNAILEIR) The Maclntyres of Glendale Parish arrived in Cape Breton in about 1820 from the island of South Uist, part of the Hebridean chain of islands off the west coast of Scotland. Nobody is certain yet where they were before South Uist but the name is common through out Scotland and Ireland. Somerled MacMillan, in his book "Sporan Dhomhnuill", on the poetry of the great Gaelic bard, Donald ‘Ruadh’ Maclntyre of South Uist, suggested "three distinct branches of Maclntyres are known to be in South Uist which are in no way related to each other". Tradition has it that one of them came from Skye via North Uist while the other two came direct from the winged isle "Skye". Their leaving South Uist was probably related to a religious upheaval which occurred there in 1770 after Alexander MacDonald of Boisdale, the Clanranald cadet who owned and administered South Uist, was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. Embittered by the discipline of the church, Boisdale carried out reprisals against those of his tenants who refused to leave the church with him and subsequently, in 1772, many of them left the island with a party of emigrants from the Scottish mainland, under the leadership of Captain John MacDonald, laird of Glendaladale and Glenfinnan, and they settled with him in Prince Edward Island.
