May 2005
FROM THE RECTOR:
The Feast of Pentecost is upon us. We celebrate it fifty days after Easter, this year on May 15 th . It is the birthday of the Church. It is the celebration of the Spirit of God being spread abroad, far and wide. It is the energy of the Divine Life of God touching all who call themselves disciples of the Risen Christ. It is the event we celebrate and must continue to live that Luke recorded in the second chapter of the Book of Acts.......when a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind; when there were tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one; when they were all filled with the Holy Spirit; and when each one heard and understood the others speaking in his own language. It is the day when we remember deep in our hearts what Jesus said to his first disciples; I will not leave you desolate; I will come to you. (John 14:18) Pentecost Sunday’s color is red as you will see in altar hangings and priestly stoles. Pentecost is one of the four special days when we celebrate the gift of the Spirit by baptizing new members of the Body of Christ, welcoming them into the journey of discipleship. It is a day when liturgically we might hear the Pentecost Gospel read in English, Spanish, German, Creole or any other language in order to re-enact the shared understanding of God’s Word in everyone’s ears. Pentecost is all these things. Yet, the truth is Pentecost is even more than these things!

A discussion on whether Charlemagne's educational and cultural achievements were greater and more durable than his military and political ones. 2,030 words ( approx. 8.1 pages ), 8 sources, APA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
    Abstract
This paper examines how during his reign, the medieval emperor Charlemagne came to dominate Europe and create an empire of a scale not seen since classical times. It looks at how he created a renaissance of learning, the arts and culture in Europe. It analyses how the empire was achieved through a number of important military victories and how after the death of Charlemagne it became quickly divided and fragmented. It puts forward the argument that his educational and cultural achievements were greater and more durable than his military and political achievements even though his educational and cultural achievements were often fundamentally dependent on or instrumental in his military and political coups.
    From the Paper:
"Charlemagne instilled a great deal of importance in historical texts. He realised the importance of annals and other historical texts in creating a sense of history and of collective national identity. It was very important to build up texts of the history of the Carolingians as part of the empire's pursuit of legitimacy. An example of an historical text which had a clear political impact and related strongly to Charlemagne's military achievements was Paul the Deacon's 'Hisotira Langobardorum'. This was a history of Lombardy. According to Mckitterick this history was 'an active contribution to the shaping of Frankish and Lombard relations.' This work actively portrayed the Carolingians as natural heirs to Lombardy."

Letters between the Church and other church members and between the church and the state, although usually having a measure of distinct courtliness, give evidence to the type of power held and the authority of the writer but only under the constraint and veil of the Church doctrine. In this way, the Church and religion are capitalized upon for political purposes.
Christine Chung 03-10-2003 01:45 PM ET (US) Re: Cooperation of the power of papacy and emperor, Cherlemagne.
According to the letters of Alcuin of York,it seems like church wants to maked a strong alliance with several kings with exphasizing the importance of the power of the God and the fact that those kings were converted to Christianity. Church wanted use the power of other kings as a physical aid for protecting church, itself from other pagans. For example, in Letter 257, it says 'God has given power and wisdom...'.
Also, kings implied to churches to cooperate together for protecting each other as Letter 255 says 'Priesty power is one thing, royal power is another. The former carries the key to the kingdom of heaven, the latter the sword to punish the guilty'.

E ngland lost her greatest teacher and Western Europe gained one of the finest scholars it would see for centuries, when Alcuin of York in England, met Charlemagne in Parma in 781. The noble-born Englishman had risen to the leadership of the school at York, earning himself an international reputation. Charles convinced him to share his talents with his empire and bestowed on him the abbeys of Ferrières and St. Loup. Steeped in the pedagogical tradition of Bede, Alcuin stirred the Franks to acquire the little learning they were to possess in the so called "Dark Ages."

The stories are of ancient myth merging with the transcendental, of victors seduced by the thoughts and institutions of the vanquished, of the persistence of a centuries-long quest and pilgrimage in search of understanding.
    The Historical Themes
    Christianity and the Roman Empire
Eighty years before the birth of Patrick, at the time of the last persecution of Christians in Rome, Constantine the Great was declared Emperor by troops in Britain. Toleration of Christianity and other religions was soon established, but the Arian controversy and Constantine's summoning of the Council of Nicea led, eventually, to the adoption of Christianity as the official religion of the Empire. Barbarians at the Gates Germanic tribes had long been settled beyond the Danube and the Rhine, but these natural defensive features were not necessarily boundaries to cultural influence. Some tribal groupings began to adopt Roman institutions. Barbarian contingents served with Roman legions. Raiding across the borders was frequent, but we also see incursions by groups who were seduced by the attractions of a higher civilisation. Barbarian enclaves were settled within the frontier provinces. Revolts there were, but assimilation and cultural diffusion was in process. This process was disrupted by the arrival of the Huns on the eastern horizon. Massive disturbance was caused by constant raiding, and by the displacement of peoples and the movements, conflicts and alliances which resulted. There was increasing Frankish settlement in Gaul. Visigoths invade Thrace and, as Patrick is captured into slavery, carry the invasion into Italy. At around the time that Patrick escapes from slavery, Rome is sacked by Visigoths under their general Alaric.

Monastic Virtues and the Carolingian Aristocracy:
Alcuin's ‘De virtutibus et vitiis liber’ and Paulinus of Aquileia's ‘Liber exhortationis’
My paper investigates one means by which clerics introduced their ecclesiastical culture into aristocratic courts of the Carolingian period, the moralizing handbook on virtues and vices. Around 800, Alcuin of York wrote the ‘De virtutibus et vitiis liber’ for Count Wido of the Breton March; Alcuin's friend Paulinus, patriarch of Aquileia, wrote the ‘Liber exhortationis’ for Duke Eric of Friuli, apparently at Alcuin's suggestion. A lack of time for religious observances, especially while on military campaigns, aroused in these two Carolingian magnates anxieties about their chances of salvation. Alcuin and Paulinus reassured their noble friends that they could be saved, if they conducted themselves according to the moralizing lessons contained in their handbooks. Both the ‘De virtutibus et vitiis liber’ and ‘Liber exhortationis’ contain readings excerpted and adapted from monastic authors and sermons. The monastic culture of both handbooks centers on the active virtues, prayer, and meditative reading of the Bible which bring about recovery of God's image within the soul of Christ's “soldier”. Alcuin and Paulinus emphasized certain aspects of this monastic culture which they found suited to aristocratic laymen fighting valiantly to extend the frontiers of the imperium christianum . As Christ's “soldiers”, Wido and Eric must wage a constant spiritual battle against the vices which afflict their souls; they must rule their courts like abbots, imposing discipline and order on the people under their authority; and they must uphold justice and peace among the Christian people as they perform the judicial and administrative duties entrusted to them as high ranking members of Charlemagne's court.
