About the Books

On-Line Books The earliest authentic works extant on European alchemy are those of the English monk Roger Bacon and the German philosopher Saint Albertus Magnus: both believed in the possibility of transmuting inferior metals into gold. Albertus Magnus, also, though his science might have been crude and defective, based it upon the instinctive recognition of the psychic links between man and nature, that he was not an alien in the universe but an integral and natural part of it, something which has been lost in modern science. Lovecraft mentions the "Albert Magnus" in an edition of his writings translated and published in 1651 by Peter Jamm being in the library of Joseph Curwen. We don't know if this edition is really a true translation of the works of Albertus Magnus or one of the many grimoires created by self-claimed mystics and alchemists. While the man did write many treatises, there were a huge number of fakes. Some of these fakes attributed to Albertus Magnus include: the "Book of Secretes" published in London, circa 1560 and "Egyptian Secrets" printed anonymously in the United States with no publisher's mark or publication date. He was said to be an adept in magical arts, expecially alchemy, weather manipulation, and creating androids capable of speech. He was a prolific writer though it is uncertain if any of his works have actually survived. Like many 'magicians' of the period, his supposed works were translated and revised out of recognition.

Albertus Magnus
From Cunnan
Albertus Magnus , also known as Saint Albert the Great The Perfect Doctor and Albert of Cologne , was a Dominican friar who lived from 1206 (?) to 1280 and who became famous for his universal knowledge and his advocacy for the peaceful coexistence of science and religion . He is considered by some to be the greatest German philosopher and theologian of the Middle Ages Many people consider him and Francis Bacon to be the two fathers of the scientific method . He was a teacher to Thomas Aquinas , who in integrating Aristotle into Christian thought managed to become considered to be the greatest of Catholic theologians. St Albert's feast day is 15 November, this would be an auspicious day for a gathering together of those who beleive that "The aim of natural science is not simply to accept the statements of others, but to investigate the causes that are at work in nature" (De Miner., lib. II, tr. ii, i), and that "Experiment is the only safe guide in such investigations" .(De Veg., VI, tr. ii, i) edit

ALBERTUS MAGNUS CIRCLE
Upcoming Discussion
and Announcements Spurred by our University's mission to pursue truth through the mutually illuminating powers of human intelligence and Christian faith, Marquette scientists, philosophers and theologians formed this faculty group in November 1998 to serve primarily as a forum for discussing issues at the boundaries of their disciplines. The name "Albertus Magnus Circle" was chosen in honor of St. Albert the Great, the 13th century theologian and natural philosopher who is the patron saint of natural scientists today.
In the spirit of St. Albert, who distinguished between knowledge gained through faith and knowledge gained exclusively through human reason but who also perceived their connection, participating faculty identified the following purposes for the group:
1) To provide a setting within which Marquette professors in the Theology, Philosophy and various science departments can discuss issues at the boundaries of their disciplines;
2) To nurture respect for one another's disciplines by better understanding their distinctive data, methods, scopes and limitations;

THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: 03/15/02) The boys soccer team entered the gym at Albertus Magnus, spilling water on the floor before a volleyball match, leaving it for an unsuspecting Megan Wettje. Wettje slipped in the water and twisted her knee, the knee that had troubled her since she dislocated her kneecap back in her freshman year of school. But the injury didn't stop her from playing that day. The senior hobbled around the court, and helped the Falcons pick up a win over the then-undefeated team from Tappan Zee during her last home match.

    Albertus Magnus , Blessed (Albert the Great), scientist, philosopher, and theologian, born c. 1206; d. at Cologne, 15 November 1280. He is called "the Great", and " Doctor Universalis" (Universal Doctor), in recognition of his extraordinary genius and extensive knowledge, for he was proficient in every branch of learning cultivated in his day, and surpassed all his contemporaries, except perhaps Roger Bacon (1214-94), in the knowledge of nature. Ulrich Engelbert, a contemporary, calls him the wonder and the miracle of his age: "Vir in omni scientia adeo divinus, ut nostri temporis stupor et miraculum congrue vocari possit" (De summo bono, tr. III, iv). I. LIFE. Studium Generale of Cologne, in which Albert was appointed Regent, whilst Thomas became second professor and Magister Studentium Studium II. WORKS. Logic : seven treatises (I. 2). The Experimental Sciences Albertus Magnus Roger Bacon
    Very interesting in the history of philosophy in the Middle Ages is the chapter which treats of the condition of the experimental sciences amongst the Schoolmen. The mere mention of this subject opens up a wide field of investigations, and before entering this field a few remarks should be made. CULTIVATION OF EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCES NOT THE HIGHEST PERFECTION. And to the peace-councils following the war, men of philosophic thought, historians, Christian statesmen and legislators, Christian gentlemen and scholars will be more valuable for the future peace and happiness of the world than the most ingenious inventor of death-dealing instruments. Woodrow Wilson is not a "world-beater" in the applied sciences, but he is recognized as a world-leader. From these considerations thoughtful men can draw their own conclusions, giving due value to the speculative and to the applied sciences. CHURCH NOT OPPOSED TO SCIENCE. The Church, too, frequently has reminded scientists that they should confine themselves to their own field of investigation; that they should not speak and act as if there were no light in Heaven or on earth except the light of their little lamps. She has told them that they have no right to begin their investigations with the supposition that there is no God, that there is no such thing as revelation, that the first chapter of Genesis contains a false account of the creation of the world. She has also told them that they must not jump at conclusions in the course of their investigations; but those words of advice and caution cannot be construed into opposition to the progress of science. They have never been understood in this sense by her own children, and assuredly they ought to know her intentions better than outsiders.
