St Albertus Magnus (Albertus de Groot)
Written and researched by Margaret Odrowaz-Sypniewska This portrait is the only painting I have
been able to find of Albert Magnus. I am told
it is a copy of a sections from a Fra Angelico(1395-1455).
Fra Angelico was known to his contemporaries as
Fra Giovanni da Fiesole. I am still trying to find
the name of the painting this portrait comes from. FEAST DAY AND PATRONAGE
St. Albert's feast day is November 15th, he was a famous philosopher and scientist. He is the patron saint of medical technicians and students of natural sciences. He was known for his scientific curiousity and disproved some of the accepted beliefs of the day. One such theory was that birds were created from trees and nourished by the sap. Albert proved that birds were hatched from eggs laid by their mothers, and that birds were nurtured in nests by their parents until they learned how to fly. These conclusions were made from observations. EARLY LIFE Albert was born between 1193 and 1207 in a castle Lauringen, Swabia, on the Danube River, near the city of Ulm. He was the eldest son of a Knight known as Count Bollstadt. He was said to have been tutored by Blessed Jordon of Saxony/Sachsen (S. Germany), who inspired him to join the Order of Preachers. EARLY STUDIES IN ALCHEMY Albert studied alchemy. At this time alchemy was primarily concerned with changing base metals into gold. The reason for this concept was the lust of kings and prelates for wealth. There was also the belief in the mythical Philosopher's Stone and the Elixir of Life. Many believed that this elixir would ensure perpetual life and health (Maple, 79). Alchemy, in the middle of the 12th century, began with the study of Arabic manuscripts. The first translation was made by Robert of Chester in 1144. We can surmise that Albert may have begun to study these works as a youth. It was Alberto Magnus and his contemporary, Roger Bacon, who began to investigate this text and those of the Arabic world. St. Albert's studies were made mostly through the work of Avicenna. Avicenna (980-1037) studied alchemy but disclaims that neither he or anyone else could make gold.

He was a learned man whose wisdom and holiness rubbed off on another who would go on to be even greater. He was the only saint of the Church called "Great" who was not a Sovereign Pontiff. He was part and parcel of the fruits of the century of saints and took an integral part in the 14th Ecumenical Council. He defended his pupil once called "the dumb ox" against all kinds of calumny and subterfuge, and always in charity. He preached throughout Western Europe, bringing the Gospel to countless souls. This Universal Doctor continued right up to his death with teaching the Faith even though he suffered in his later years from Alzheimer's well before it was even called that. He was born in the family castle at Lauingen, Bavaria in 1206, in the region of Ausgburg, of parents rich in good fortune. From the time he was a child, he manifested in his studies an unusual aptitude for the exact sciences. While he was still a boy, he had himself let down the side of a cliff to examine at close range an eagle’s nest which interested him. At the age of fifteen he was already a student of the natural sciences and the humanities at Bologna.

Cordula?
Cordula
Cordula (also Kordula) is a feminine first name. Its latin meaning "little heart" stems from cordis . Cordula is a very rare first name, which is still in sporadic use in german and english speaking countries, though it can also be found in France, Brazil, and other parts of the world as well. St. Cordula Day, October 22nd, is dedicated to St. Ursula's companion, who died approx. 453 A.D. and was spoken a saint by St. Albertus Magnus in 1278. She is portrayed as a maiden holding a ship.
The Legend of St. Cordula
Ursula, the daughter of a Christian king of Britain, King Dionotus of Cornwall, set on to a pelerinage to Rome. She sailed up the rhine with a following of 10 virgins in 11 ships. Each of them were accompanied with 1,000 maid servants. At Basel, they moored their ships and crossed the Alps. On their way back, they were stopped near Cologne by the invading Huns. The leader of the Huns immediately fell in love with the british princess and proposed to her. As he was rejected, he went mad and ordered the slaughter of Ursula, her companions and their 11,000 maiden servants. The slaughter went on the whole night. Cordula, one of the virgins and a close friend to Ursula, being terrified by the tortures and slayings of the others, managed to hide deep in her ship and went undiscovered throughout that dreadful night. By the morning of the next day, repenting of her deed, she went out and fought valiantly the Huns and succumbed as a martyr, October 22nd, 453 A.D.

The New Age and Albertus Magnus
By Edward O’Brien, Jr. The occult New Age movement is not easy to define. The New Age refers to various non-traditional religious groups which differ widely from one another. However, they share enough common ideas and behavioral patterns to enable us to speak of them as a whole. A good description of the New Age is a movement that “emphasizes the holistic view of body and mind, alternative or complementary medicines, personal growth therapies, and a loose mix of theosophy, ecology, oriental mysticism, and a belief in the dawning of an astrological age of peace and harmony . . . it includes New Age ideas such as monism and pantheism, preferring intuition and direct experience to rationality and science” (Rev. James J. LeBar, Cults, Sects, and the New Age , Huntington, Indiana, Our Sunday Visitor, 1989, p. 152). Not long ago, I chanced to see, in a friend’s house, a New Age catalog which startled me by its bizarre character. With permission, I borrowed the catalog in order to study it in depth. Thus, a very odd world—what has been called The Pagan Way—came into closer and sharper focus.
