Albertus Magnus A German Dominican, who was canonized as Saint Albert the Great. He was both a student and teacher of alchemy and chemistry, and an alleged magician , since he was repeatedly charged by some of his unfriendly contemporaries with holding communications with the devil , practicing the craft of magic , and with the making of a demonic automata able to speak. He was also one of the alchemists reputed to have succeeded in discovering the Philosopher's Stone . After a alleged encounter with the blessed Virgin, Albertus stared espousing holy orders, and eventually won eminence in the clerical profession, being made Bishop of Ratisbon. Albertus was born at Larvingen, on the Danube, sometime between 1193 and 1206, and the term Magnus is not the result of his reputation, but is the Latin equivalent of his family name, de Groot. According to tradition, he was the inventor of the pistol and the cannon, but, while is unlikely that the credit is due to him for this, the mere fact that he was thus acknowledged indicates that his scientific skill was recognized by a few, if only a few, of the men of his own time. He died at Cologne, the exact date being unknown (some say 1280). Related software and videos Related books:

Albert the Great
by Sr. M. Albert Hughes, O.P. Autumn 1987 Vol. 39 Supplement Introduction Foreword by the author. Foundations Friar Preacher and Master in Theology ... Saint Albert the Great Introduction READING Sister Mary Albert's lively portrait of her patron saint, we come to grasp the attractiveness of Albert's robust vigor, his breadth of intellect open to the world, and his depth of soul so rooted in God that even his contemporaries were led to call him "great." We can understand why Thomas Aquinas was so taken with his older confrere's desire to explore, his willingness to dialogue, and to take bold stands. Such shared values integrated and held in balance by a clarity of faith and consurning love of neighbor put them both on the cutting edge of theological development and made them "risk-takers" in their service of Church and society. History has accorded Thomas the greater role. Indeed, when Dante (Paradiso X) approaches the garland of lights that seemed caught up in dance, it is Thomas Aquinas who steps forward to introduce the luminous band, beginning with "Albert of Cologne, my friend and teacher." A few years ago the late Father James A. Weisheipl, O.P., explored Thomas's relationship to his friend and teacher. While Thomas derived much from his master, as his writings show, the reverse is not true. Albert, it seems, did not keep up with his student's work until after Thomas death, when he took it upon himself to defend what had been their common stand against traditionalist critics. By then well advanced in age, Albert had Thomas' works read to him, so the story goes. Thus it is only in Albert's later works, written mostly after Thomas' death, and the scripture commentaries in particular, that Thomas' influence is apparent.

Albertus Magnus
Albertus Magnus lived in the thirteenth century and might be considered another magus. In the Dominican Order he rose to the position of Bishop of Ratisbourg. Later he was canonized as Saint Albert the Great. He was both student and teacher of alchemy and chemistry, and an alleged magician. He firmly believed in the benefits of botany claiming various plants, rocks, and amethysts improved clairvoyance. Like Aristotle, he thought nature and men's lives were controlled by the stars and plants. Notably he taught Saint Thomas Acquinas and made several significant contributions to chemistry. Legend has it he turned based metal into gold, but there is no evidence of this in his notes on alchemy. Legend also has it that when a dinner guest of William II, the Count of Holland, on New Year's Day, 1242, Magnus suggested the guests dine outdoors. Wanting a piece of land for a monastery he graciously changed the freezing day into a warm spring afternoon with blooming flowers and singing birds. LIFE Albert, eldest son of the Count of Bollstädt, was born at Lauingen, Swabia, in the year 1205 or 1206, though many historians give it as 1193. Nothing certain is known of his primary or preparatory education, which was received either under the paternal roof or in a school of the neighbourhood.

Albert the Great - around 1200-1280
Among the major medieval scholars Albert the Great is a conspicuous figure. He was born around 1200, maybe as late as 1206, in the small Swabian town of Lauingen, as the son of the count of Bollstadt. His thirst for knowledge showed early on. During his study in Northern Italy he joined the Dominican order in 1223 in the presence of Jordan of Saxony, the successor of Saint Dominic. From 1228 Albert teached in several towns, such as Hildesheim, Freiburg, Regensburg, Strasbourg and Cologne. In 1241 he was sent to Paris for further study. At the university of Paris he became in 1245 a master of theology. Between 1243 and 1248 Albert teached in Paris, first on the Sententiae

Albertus Magnus and the Lex Shield
Albertus Magnus "Albertus Magnus" or Albert the Great is the name of the imposing bronze statue situated in the courtyard of the University of Houston Law Center. Albert the Great was a medieval theologian and "Man of Universal Knowledge." Born in Lauingen, Bavaria sometime between 1193 and 1206, he was a bishop, doctor and saint of the Roman Catholic Church, having as one of his students Saint Thomas Aquinas. He taught in Paris and at the Studium Generale in Cologne, a university run by the Order of the Dominicans in the 13th century and one of the first universities in Europe. A dominant figure, he was an influential teacher, an experienced traveler, a keen observer of life and nature and the one learned man of the Golden Age to be called "the Great." He was later declared a saint by the catholic church. With his open law book and profound expression, Big Al, as he is informally called, is the bigger than life symbol of the legal profession to Law Center students and faculty. Lex Shield The seal of the University of Houston Law Center is composed of three martlets above an opened text emblazoned with the Latin word for law, LEX. The martlet, a gentle Lowlands bird, symbolizes peace and deliverance. Martlets appear in the University of Houston seal which has as its genesis the coat of arms of General Sam Houston who claimed descent from an eleventh century Norman knight, Sir Hugh of Padavan.
