    How Summer Came to Canada
A very affectionate thank-you to the beautiful girls who enlightened me as to how Summer came to Canada. In this heart warm retelling of native folklore we learn of the giant Winter, Glooskap, the lord and creator of the Indians and the fair maiden Summer. Along the way meet such memorable characters as Loon and Whale, as Glooskap endeavors to break the spell of the giant Winter over his native land. This children's book is a retelling based in part on the version in Canadian Wonder Tales by Cyrus Macmillan. His original story reproduced here care of the Baldwin Project Once during Glooskap's lifetime and reign in Canada it grew very cold. Everywhere there was snow and ice, and in all the land there was not a flower nor a leaf left alive. The fires that the Indians built could not bring warmth. The food supply was slowly eaten up, and the people were unable to grow more corn because of the hard frozen ground. Great numbers of men and women and children died daily from cold and hunger, and it seemed as if the whole land must soon perish.

In it, Mr. Stark—a perpetual debunker of received wisdom—debunks a number of notions held about the impact of religion in history. His second chapter, “God’s Handiwork,” takes aim at the notion that science and religion have been in perpetual opposition. Stark stresses the critical role that religion, and particularly Christianity, played in the development of modern science. He points out that only Christianity of the great world religions believed in a supremely rational Creator who governed nature via divine law. He argues that unless a society

Peacetime and the Plan to Join Bavaria (at Dresden, 13th to 29th May): Immediately prior to hostilities Saxony's intention was to retreat to join the Bavarian corps. For the withdrawal the army was organised into an Avante Garde, a Main Body and a Reserve. Homework Assignment #2
    Due January 27
In general, your responses to these assignments should be typed. These assignments will often involve some reading outside the material in the text (Shamos).
Reading: Chapter 2 of Shamos (Galileo).
  • A fourteenth-century scholar, Albert of Saxony, proposed that the speed of a falling body is proportional to the distance it has fallen. This means that compared to its speed after having fallen 1 foot, a body is travling twice as fast after falling 2 feet, three times as fast after 3 feet, and so on. For centuries, anybody who thought about it at all assumed Albert was right. (This proposal is described by Sagredo on page 25 of Shamos.) Leonardo da Vinci, in the fifteenth century, formulated a different law of motion. He proposed that the distances fall in successive equal intervals of time are proportional to the consecutive integers. That is, suppose that, starting from rest, a body falls one foot in the first time interval. Then the body will traverse two feet in the second time interval, 3 feet in the third time interval, etc.
    • In Two New Sciences Galileo asserts (starting at the bottom of page 25) that the law of Albert of Saxony cannot be correct because when an object is released, it has not fallen any distance and therefore it has no speed. Having no speed, of course, it would not begin to fall. Are you convinced by this argument? Why or why not? (Could one make the same argument for a form of Galileo's law, wherein speed is related to distance?)

Early Life When the only son of Charles VI died and left no heir to the throne, Charles furthered the Pragmatic Sanction. The Pragmatic Sanction is a royal act, which allowed a female to inherit the territories of the Habsburg. In 1736 Maria Theresa married Francis Stephen of Lorraine. The marriage of Maria to Francis was one of love, which was very unlike many in that time. The French strongly opposed the marriage of Lorraine lands to the Habsburg lands and demanded that he give up his ancestral rights of Lorraine for the succession of Tuscany. Schooling Maria Theresa did not have much schooling in politics, so when her father died on October 17, 1740, she was ill prepared. She had never had book-learned education and was only taught the proper etiquette and court manners that the ladies of her time learned.
