It is hard to believe today that Puccini's La Bohème received a cool response from the Italian critics when it premiered. (You do have to watch out for critics, no?) Bohème caught on quickly with the public, though, and has been in the repertories of the world's opera companies ever since. A first telecast by the Metropolitan Opera in 1977 was said to have been seen by more people than at all the staged performances since the opera's premiere in 1896 combined, which confirms the impression that this is one of the most popular operas of all time.
And it is no wonder. With ravishing melodies and directness in its emotional appeal

Sperry Top-Sider - Men's Authentic Original

Théâtre du Capitole La Rondine is the only opera among Puccini's mature works that is generally passed over in the current repertoryand with good reason. Written and first performed in the midst of World War I, it's a work that looks back with somewhat treacly nostalgia, as if the world were frozen somewhere in the nineteenth century.
Placed in fin de siecle Paris, the plot is disconcertingly similar to that of Verdi's La Traviata which is set two centuries earlier. Magda, a courtesan, falls in love with Ruggero, a handsome young man of good family, parts from her wealthy lover and leaves Paris to live with Ruggero in the south of France. There is no Germont here, the parental force of Traviata who so effectively puts Violetta into profound conflict. When Ruggero proposes to Magda, he has already received the blessing of his mother in a letter which approves of the match so long as his intended is of good character. Magda confesses her past to Ruggero and leaves him. At least Puccini did not feel the necessity of punishing her with a terminal case of tuberculosis.
Originally commissioned by producers of Viennese operetta, the libretto of

Giacomo Albanese (Geraci Siculo 1890-S. Paulo 1947).
Giacomo Albanese studied in Palermo and later in Pisa at the Scuola Normale Superiore where he had as teachers, among the others, E. Bertini and L. Bianchi and he took his degree in 1913. Later he became assitent of Dini and Nicoletti in Pisa and, for a few months, of Severi in Padova. He taught geometry at the Accademia Navale di Livorno (1920-1923), in Catania (1923-26), in Palermo (1926-29) and in Pisa (1929-1936). Starting in 1936 he taught geometry at the University of S. Paulo, in Brasil, where he contributed in a very important way to the development of the mathematical department (as confirmed also by A. Weil, who was his successor in that university). In 1942, because of the World War II he returned to Italy, but at the end of the war, in 1946, he went back to S. Paulo where he stayed until his death in 1947. Even if he didnít publish too many papers he may be considered as one of the most prominent and original Italian algebraic geometers. His collected works have been published in 1996 in the Queenís University Papers. Main commemorations and studies: B. Castrucci

The Arbëreshë Albanians of Italy The “ Arbreshë " communities, in Italy, are mostly allocated in Calabria, Sicily, Basilicata, Apulia, Campania, Molise and Abbruzzo. The first great emigration from the land of the eagles took place between the 1416 and the 1442, when some Albanian troops came in aid to Alfonso of Aragon, ally of Skanderbeg, against Roberto d' Angiò. These valorous soldiers were recompensed with small plots , so they decided to settle definitively with their families in the Italian peninsula. The second emigration goes back to the death of Skanderbeg, (the period from the 1466 to the 1468), when a large number of Albanians (in some scholar’s opinion, they were the most faithful soldiers of the leader of Kruja) fleed from the Turkish persecution and settled in the south of Italy. The hasty emigration first of the Christian populations of the city of Koronë ,and then (approximately in the 1533) of the city of Maida (1646), represents other examples of massive movements towards Southern Italy. Many years after, numerous inhabitants of Shkodrë landed on the Italian shoreline in the suite of the Venetians, while many Albanians of the south of Vlora settled in the Reign of Naples of Carl III. Actually, little transmigrations continued also in the following centuries, as if Italy had always been predestined to represent the dream of the Albanians.

Giacomo Puccini: Opera's last great 1858-1924
When Giacomo Puccini was born in 1858, opera was a popular art form. Like today's movie audiences, opera lovers flocked to all the newest works; older material was stuff for specialists, or something to see when nothing new was around. When Puccini died in 1924, he was writing the last Italian opera to enter the world repertory and achieve widespread popularity. When Puccini died, so did opera as a vital, constantly self-renewing art. Today, opera houses are musical museums. At age 17, Puccini saw a production of Verdi's ``Aida'' and decided that if he were to become a composer like all his direct male ancestors going back to his great-great-grandfather, he must specialize in opera. After Puccini graduated from the Milan Conservatory, his 1883 one-act opera ``Le Villi'' brought him to the attention of Giulio Ricordi, Italy's leading music publisher. Ricordi thought that with the proper backing, Puccini would soon be hailed as Verdi's true successor, and provided the young composer with an annuity. Popular support was slow to come, though. Puccini's next opera, ``Edgar,'' flopped in 1889. Not until the triumphant premiere of ``Manon Lescaut'' in 1893 did anyone mention Puccini in the same breath with Verdi.

Maria Rosalia Bitri
f rom the little town of Campomarino, Molise, Italy Dear friends, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to my homepage!
I hope that you will find this site interesting.
I promise you that I will update this page from time to time with new interesting links and more information about myself and my personal interests. My name is Maria. Rosalia is my second name. I come from a small region called Molise, situated in the south-east central part of Italy.
It consists of two provinces, Campobasso and Isernia.
Molise was created in 1965 from the southern portion of the former region of Abruzzi e Molise. It has an area of 1,713 square miles, which makes it the secon smallest region of Italy.
The western sector of the region is part of the mountainous Apennines; it is drained by the Volturno river westward to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The rest of Molise consists of low mountains and hills, with a narrow strip of lowlands across the Adriatic coast. 90% of the region is considered upland. Central and Eastern Molise are drained by the Biferno river to the Adriatic Sea. I live in Campomarino, a very small village on the coast.
Molise is one of the most rural regions of Italy. The economy is still widely based on agriculture. Wheat and potatoes are the principal crops. Livestok raising (pigs, sheep, goats, cattle) is extensive. Industrial development is slight.
