    THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF GEOGRAPHERS
The 1996 annual meeting of the CAG was held in Saskatoon from May 11-16th. This was also the first joint meeting with the Canadian Geomorphological Research Group and many sessions had a strong physical geography component. A primary theme for the meeting was Global Changes in the Palliser Triangle that began with a three day field trip lead by Alec Aitken (U.Saskatchewan) and Don Lemmen (GSC). The related conference sessions (organised by Don Lemmen and Bob Vance, GSC) contained 18 papers that ranged from climatology and tree-rings through paleolimnology and palynology to geomorphology and a session on agricultural impacts. A second major theme was on aeolian geomorphology (organised by Stephen Wolfe, GSC) with 11 papers discussing Holocene aeolian records, aeolian processes and their mitigation / control. Both the Aeolian and Palliser Triangle sessions were cosponsored by CGRG and GSC. Three complementary sessions (11 papers) discussed the Changing Human Landscapes of the Prairies (organised by A.B. Beaudoin, Provincial Museum of Alberta, and D.Naldrett, Calgary). Other related sessions included a panel discussion climate change and Prairie agriculture and more general sessions relating to biogeography, treelines, Climatology, GEWEX and glacial geomorphology. There was also a major symposium on Environmental Impact Studies in Canada.

HISTORY Dumbarton People's Theatre was founded in 1945 as a successor to the Scottish People's Theatre. The original company had it's own little theatre before World War II and D.P.T. grew literally from the ashes of the old theatre which was bombed during the Clydebank Blitz. The new company had several homes, starting in the town's Burgh Hall. In 1960 the old Boy Scout's hall in Glasgow Road was acquired and converted into a theatre. The Denny Bequest, left by the firm of William Denny, the famous shipbuilders of the town, made funds available to provide a purpose built theatre to serve the community. In 1969 the Denny Civic Theatre opened and productions have been staged there ever since. The premises in Glasgow Road were subsequently demolished and a new rehearsal studio, workshop and store built in its place. Rehearsals still take place there as well as club nights and social events. PREVIOUS PLAYS/PRODUCTIONS From November 1945 with "Mr Pim Passes By" to "The Steamie" in April 2004, DPT have entertained audiences with a large number of productions. Season 1 1945 Nov. Hannah's husband, Denis Fitzgerald was on the Sydney stage from mid 1840s to mid 1860s, and often accompanied in his acting, dancing, etc. roles by a "Mr Collins". One venue was Barnett Levey's Theatre Royal in George-st, Sydney. I have an interest in identifying this Mr Collins as I am also researching the early Sydney theatrical scene. Biographical Sketch
Edward Morgan Forster was born January 1, 1879, in London. His father, also Edward Morgan, was an architect and died of consumption 18 months after the birth of his son, leaving him in the care of his mother, Alice Clara Whichelo and a variety of female relatives. Forster's mother moved with her young son to rural Hertfordshire in 1883 where he lived for most of his childhood before being sent to Kent House preparatory school in Eastbourne. In 1887 a great-aunt left a legacy to Forster which, when combined with his father's estate, paid for Forster's education and later allowed him the leisure to be a writer without needing to worry about income. Forster finished his school days at Tonbridge School, which he attended as a day student rather than as a boarder between 1893-1897. In the autumn of 1897, Forster entered King's College, Cambridge, where he found liberation from the conformist attitudes of preparatory school. He was elected to the Apostles in 1901, along with Desmond MacCarthy, and became acquainted with the well-known alumni of that society, G.E. Moore, Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf, and Roger Fry, among others, who later introduced him into the Bloomsbury group. It was at Cambridge that Forster began to think of himself as a writer and the years immediately following his graduation were his most productive as a novelist. Between 1903 and 1910 he produced

HAPPENINGS IN 1996
In the fall term, we welcomed Dale Leckie, C.S.P.G. speaker, who discussed the petroleum geology of southern Saskatchewan, Elizabeth Kosters, ITC, Netherlands, who explained recent developments in understanding the coastline of Holland, Joe Mandarino, Royal Ontario Museum, who gave us new insights into the naming of minerals and the work of the International Mineralogical Association, and Tim Webster, College of Geographic Sciences, who showed how remote sensing can be used to help to elucidate the geology of northern Nova Scotia. In addition, many of our students and faculty presented seminars on their travels or topics of research. As usual, the department was well represented at various conferences and events around the region - 20 people ventured to Bathurst, N.B., (in early February!) to the Atlantic Geoscience Society meeting, 27 students attended the AUGC in Fredericton, and faculty and students displayed posters or gave talks at these events and at the annual open houses of the departments of natural resources in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Visiting us for the past two summers and the intervening winter has been Laura Grecco, from the Universidad Nacional del Sur, in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. Laura used the opportunity to work with Sandra Barr on granitic rocks from the Cape Breton Highlands while her husband, Eduardo Gomez, worked out of the Acadia Centre for Estuarine Research. They returned to Argentina in October (although Laura says she did not leave because winter was coming - in fact she rather enjoyed winter in Nova Scotia!)

Many people have been involved in E-SCAPE research since 2000. Thanks to their many talents and enthusiasm, the analysis is proceeding apace, and some parts of the project have already generated reports and publications.
Quinn Benders
Beginning in 2003, Quinn has been working on a dissertation focussed on Agate Basin sites and materials in Alberta and Saskatchewan. He is collating information on the distribution and characteristics of Agate Basin sites. He is in the graduate program at the Anthropology Department, University of Alberta.
Vandy Bowyer
Vandy worked on the palaeoenvironmental database in its initial stages. She got the files organized, set up the fields in the database, and did lots of library searching to find new sites and references. Vandy reviewed all the pollen records we had on file, and established the "most popular types" - the pollen taxa that are most common in most records and that form the basis for subsequent analyses.
Lindsay Elliott
Between late 2003 to mid-2004, Lindsay worked on the macroremains recovered from bulk sediment samples from the excavation units at the Stampede Site (DjOn-26). She identified, counted, and documented the seeds and molluscs in the samples.
Jason Gillespie
Jason helped with the coring trips to Elkwater and Candle Lake in winter 2002 and with fieldwork in summer 2003 and summer 2004. Jason also participated in the winter coring expedition to Wakaw and Rhona Lakes in 2004. Now he is busy with his own research, focussed on the landscapes and human history of central Saskatchewan. Jason is in the graduate program at the Anthropology Department, University of Alberta. He has also collated and analysed primary and proxy climate data as part of a project to examine the impact of the Little Ice age on that region.

NZMS Newsletter 63, April 1995 CENTREFOLD Alexander Craig Aitken Alexander Craig Aitken was born on 1 April 1895 in a rented house in Short Street, Dunedin. William, his father, had been born at Maungatua, a small settlement on the Taieri Plain about twenty miles from Dunedin. William's parents were rural Scots, strong, intelligent people and immensely hardworking. They settled on a small farm at Sandymount on the Otago Peninsula, an area which possessed even into recent years an enchanting separateness in which flora, fauna and human individuality could flourish beyond common expectation. William left the farm to take up a position as a grocer's assistant in Dunedin. There he met and later married Elizabeth Towers, the daughter of his landlady. Elizabeth had arrived in New Zealand at the age of 7; little is known about her. The Aitkens' circumstances were straitened even by the standards of the time. It was nevertheless a loving and harmonious family, infused with a deep but tolerant religious sensibility that derived from William's commitment to Methodism. The qualities for which Aitken later gained a not entirely welcome tabloid fame, his memory and calculating ability, were present from his earliest years. His father possessed similar qualities and the two of them would do the shop's accounts together, one adding up the column, the other down as a check, both working mentally. It was in his later years at Otago Boys' High School that Alec, in his own phrase, "took off" under the influence of W J Martyn, the mathematics master. He began to cultivate mental computation almost as a kind of meditation: his descriptions of it and certain other experiences are frequently expressed in mystical terms. He learned the
