(Doctor of Philosophy) erwarb.

Sellers died Wednesday in Anniston, Ala. Sellers was elected sheriff in Aiken County in 1992 and served until 2003, former Chief Deputy Jody Rowland said. Sellers joined the Homeland Security Department in 2003 and was instructing first-responders, Rowland said. Sheriff Michael Hunt said he recently talked with his predecessor about homeland security training. "He stayed in contact with me and I with him," Hunt said. "He was one of the people who called us during (the train wreck in) Graniteville just to say we were going a good job. That praise meant a lot coming from a professional." A funeral service will be held in Alabama.

Excerpt
These two volumes, which have been several years in preparation, were eagerly awaited by the history of computing community. The wait was certainly not in vain. Howard Aiken, and the machines he created at Harvard, are recognized as pioneers in computing, but neither the man nor his machines have been well understood. These two volumes rectify that shortcoming. Both benefit from Bernard Cohen's long and personal knowledge of Aiken and his activities at Harvard. Aiken was famous for having a demanding and often abrasive personality, and Cohen's biographical Portrait clearly elucidates how his upbringing and early experiences helped enhance both his personality traits and his dedication to his fielda real rags-to-riches story accomplished by enormous discipline and hard work.

Z Howard Aiken Biography Howard Aiken is considered one of the pioneers of the computer field, being the primary engineer behind IBM's Harvard Mark I computer. He was born on March 9, 1900 in Hoboken, New Jersey and passed away on March 14, 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri.
He studied at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and later obtained his PhD in physics at Harvard University in 1939. During this time he encountered differential equations that he could only solve numerically. As such, he envisioned an electro-mechanical computing device that could do much of the tedious work for him. This computer was originally called the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (ASCC) and later renamed Harvard Mark I. With help from Grace Hopper and funding from IBM the machine was completed in 1944. In 1947, Aiken completed his work on the fully electronic Mark II computer.
He is also well known for his 1947 comment, "Only six electronic digital computers would be required to satisfy the computing needs of the entire United States." Howard Aiken Resources Contact Us Sitemap
