The circle is one of the enigma's of mathematics. It is defined as the set of points in a given plane at a given distance from a center point. From a practical position, a compass is an excellent tool for describing such a circle. It is one of the simplest concepts, a cornerstone in the edifice of mathematics. Yet, it eludes mathematical exactness. It is a constant reminder that nothing is exact, even in mathematics. It is not difficult to see why so many wise men pondered the problem in hopes of imposing order upon a reluctant nature. The earliest evidence of practical attempts to solve the problem of squaring the circle comes from the Egyptian Ahmes Papyrus(circa 1550 BC), where the area of a circle is approximated via the formula (64/81) times the diameter^2 [or 3.16 r^2]. The Egyptian's, though, are considered practical mathematicians and probably never confronted the problem formally, and legendary credit for first formal attempt is given to Anaxagorus of Clazomenae while he was in prison for a time. The problem gained importance as Greek mathematics evolved, and it eventually became such a prominent issue that it even earned ridicule from Aristophanes in his Birds , as the astronomer Meton tries to aid in the division of land(beginning in line 997) The problem of squaring the circle defeated conventional techniques of compass and straight edge, but it remained until recent times to be proven impossible. The Greeks, realizing the difficulty, were forced to turn to more complicated structures like the

Egyptian Math History
The history of Egyptian mathematics can be fairly read in its
original base 10 rational number system when the data is fully
translated into our modern base 10 fraction system. This blog
argues that the oldest number system has not been fairly read
by modern language speakers by soley considering the ancient
Egyptian words and math statements in their ancient context.
Words, numbers and snapshot aspects of ancient statements
will be shown to have been fragmented as set down by scribal
shorthand, hence very hard to read.
To resolve several fragmented aspects, wider translations of the scribal math shorthand must be developed. One of the newer techniques that is being developed translates the ancient data into modern base 10 decimals as a bilingual text. The new

United Airlines, WHQHI FAX: 847-700-2187 Dear Charlie, I remain cautiously optimistic on our future here in Philadelphia after our telephone conversation Thursday, June 19, 2003. Your prompt telephone response and positive attitude towards our survey as a viable alternative to some of the roadblock we have encountered was encouraging. As we agreed to maintain protocol, any negotiations on this issue would be directed through Greg and Helen at the MEC office. As we also agreed, time was of the utmost importance, therefore I contacted Greg immediately on Thursday to continue talks on our behalf. I look forward to meeting with you, Greg and Helen early this week to iron out a proposal and agreement that allow our co-terminal suggestion to become a reality on August 31, 2003 or soon after. Charlie, should anything in this letter concerning our telephone conversation be inaccurate, please contact me at your earliest convenience. I also look forward to discussing these issues with you in-person along with Greg and Helen in the near future.

Letter #1 To Charlie Ahmes
June 19, 2003 PDF Version Mr. Charlie Ahmes
United Airlines, WHQHI FAX: 847-700-2187 Dear Charlie, As you have said, domiciles are regularly reviewed for financially viability and it would be difficult to convince me management has allowed the Philadelphia domicile to run in the red for an extended period of time. Except for the spoils of past Chairman and CEO, Goodwin, United has always run a frugal operation. The so-called niche to our 75-year heritage, I do believe. As you also know, AFA at your personal request has presented the company with an array of cost saving tools that frankly would have been unbelievable in the past. Even the notion of reopening the CBA outside of the Section 6 arena is normally unthinkable. But Charlie, the unthinkable happened. The combined desire to save hundreds from one of the most stressful situations facing any person was realized. Flight Attendants in Philadelphia have gone one additional step and developed a draft to save our home and quality of life, we actually conducted a survey, and the results were impressive. Those on active status due to our time constraints mainly answered the survey. Simply, we are seeking a regional domicile by combining the EWR and PHL domiciles. The combination has great potential due to our geographical proximity and ease of transportation to EWR.

the G REAT QUEEN HATSHEPSUT Amon-Re, the King of the Gods, sat upon his throne and looked out upon Egypt. Presently he spoke to the assembled council of the gods - to Thoth and Khonsu and Khnemu, to Isis and Osiris, Nephthys, Horus, Harmachis, Anubis and the rest - saying: 'There has been many a Pharaoh in the Land of Khem, in the Double Land of Egypt, and some of them have been great and have pleased me well. Khufu and Khafra and Menkaura long ago who raised the great pyramids of Giza; Amenhotep and Thutmose of today who have caused the peoples of the world to bow down at my feet. Now is the dawning of the golden age in Egypt, and it comes into my mind to create a great queen to rule over Khem: yes, I will unite the Two Lands in peace for her, I will give her rule over the whole world, over Syria and Nubia besides Egypt - yes, even to the far-distant land of Punt.' Then said Isis in her silvery voice that sounded like the shaken bells on her sistrum, 'Father of Gods and Men, no queen has yet ruled in Egypt, in the holy land of Khem, save only one, when the good god Osiris had passed into the Duat, and the good god Horus was still but a child, while Seth the Evil, the terrible one, stalked unchained up and down the land. Father of Gods and Men, if you create such a queen, my blessing and wisdom shall be upon her.'

THE RHIND 2/n TABLE This table found on the Rhind (Ahmes) Papyrus contains a list of Egyptian fractions used for 2/n where n is an odd n umber from 3 to 101. To learn how or why are the choices made as below, read De-mystifying the Rhind 2/n Table , where the diacritical remarks are explained from my initial understanding. There are several places on the web attempting to (and some which don't) present exact data on the Rhind Mathematical papyrus rolls. I have included these links in a letter , from expert Milo Garner, below . A second 2002 paper by Gardner appears here first a general formula for creating the majority of 2/pq series:
2/pq = 2/A x A/pq, where A = (p + 1) # means factor q=3*k and use (1/2 + 1/6)/k
2/35 = 1/25 + 1/30 + 1/42 [this is neither 2/7*5 or 2/5*7] ::: 2/37 = 1/24 + 1/111 + 1/296 2/53 = 1/30 + 1/318 + 1/795 ::: 2/55 = 1/30 + 1/330 (use 2/11 instead of 2/5) 2/89 = 1/60 + 1/356 + 1/534 + 1/890 ::: 2/91 = 1/70 + 1/130 (do not use 2/7) 2/93 = 1/62 + 1/186 # ::: 2/95 = 1/60 + 1/380 + 1/570 (do not use 2/5) Calculating 2/51, with p = 3 and q = 17
