Preserving Integrity The goal of Egyptian funerary practices was to help the defunct reach the stage of Akh Ba , and Ka Delegation of Labor The Egyptian state apparatus relied on a sophisticated system of civil service draft that was demanded of all Egyptians. Every citizen had to work for the state for a few weeks a year (Kemp 2000:129). Egyptians naturally assumed that such a system had to exist in the kingdom of the dead.

Its scope is all the canvas of the history of numbers in mathematics. But its treatment sometimes leaves one wondering what the Dickens it is about. I expect that most of us owe our involvement in mathematics to reading popularizations in our youth. Certainly, many of us were turned on by the writings of Martin Gardner, George Gamow, Isaac Asimov, Lancelot Hogben, W. W. Rouse Ball , H. E. Dudeney and much of what is found in James R. Newman's World of Mathematics. These authors offered recreational wonders and challenges to the investigative mind: the more one toyed, the more one dug, the more wonders one found! So it appears to have been for Midhat Gazalé, who largely credits his latest offering, Number: from Ahmes to Cantor , to inspiration he received from Martin Gardner's many Scientific American columns and books, and to Tobias Dantzig's

Egyptian Fractions
Ed Pegg Jr., July 19, 2004 Imagine overseeing a farm. Distribute 29 equal sacks of grain evenly to 45 people. There is only one sorting table, so you can't divide up more than one sack at a time. How can you assure a fair share for each person? Consider this: 1/3 + 1/5 + 1/9 = 29/45. So, 15 of the sacks can be divided into 3 parts, 9 of them into 5 parts, and 5 of them into 9 parts. Then, each of the 45 people gets one of each type of part. In the diagram below, each person gets a red, yellow, and green part.
Figure 1. Dividing 29 sacks equally between 45 people. Each person gets This problem dates back 4000 years. At the time, algebra and geometry didn't exist. No decimals. Whole numbers existed, but not fractions like 29/45. The ancient Egyptians would indicate a "part" number by a symbol that looked like a mouth . Thus, "part 7" would indicate 1/7. An Egyptian fraction would be something like part 3 + part 5 + part 9. In other words, 1/3 + 1/5 + 1/9 = 29/45. As seen above, this system was useful in dividing sacks of grain. How smart were the ancient Egyptians? Try testing your skills against theirs. Find three different whole numbers, all less than 600, so that their reciprocals (the "parts") add up to

THE PERSON
Our hero, Ahmose-son-of-Abana served as head of the king's sailors ("Admiral") under three successive sovereigns: Ahmosis, Amenhotep I and Thutmosis I (about 1580-1520 B.C.).
The nomarchs (governors) of El Kab and their families were ardent supporters of the newly rising Theban Dynasty which had to face unceasing and exhausting wars, and there is no doubt that this loyalty had been extensively rewarded with gold, lands and personnel. Frequently, even the royal children were entrusted to them, which is explicitly indicated by Paheri. They ended up having control of the whole region situated between El Kab and Esna.
Paheri, grandson of Ahmose, doesn't fail to show in this tomb, his connection with this famous ancestor (see

Ahmes
Ahmes (more accurately Ahmose ) was an Egyptian scribe who lived during the Second Intermediate Period . A surviving work of Ahmes is part of the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus now located in the British Museum (Newman, 1956). Ahmes states that he copied the papyrus from a now-lost Middle Kingdom original. The work is entitled directions for knowing all dark things and is a collection of problems in geometry and arithmetic. The problems are presented with solutions, but often with no hint as to how the solution was obtained. Ahmes states without proof that a circular field with a diameter of 9 units is equal in area to a square with sides of 8 units (Beckman, 1971). 'Number from Ahmes to Cantor', by Midhat Gazale/, amongst the

I haven't of course had time to work through it yet, but I have
dipped into it (as one does) to see what it has to say about
such topics as the burning of the Library of Alexandria, and
the alleged drowning of Hippasus.
My initial impression is that this is the sort of book that one
could recommend with a clear conscience to the general reader, in particular to undergraduates or mathematically interested schoolchildren. (In particular, my impression from a superficial

I guess you would gladly endure the worst English if you could have a chat with, say, Archimedes) Me: Good morning, professor Ahmes. Today I would like to ask you a principal question. What are numbers? What is your idea of numbers? What is their nature? How do they work? What are they good for? Ahmes: Well, you announced that question last week, and so I prepared myself to provide a short and nevertheless complete answer. Numbers are basically things of the mind, I believe, and the very instrument by which Osiris overcame Seth. Me: I can imagine what you mean by the first part of your answer, while the second one leaves me rather perplexed I must confess.
