The Time of Al-Khwarizmi "First Half of Ninth Century" The ninth century was essentially a Muslim century. To be sure, intellectual work did not cease in other centuries; but the activity of the Muslim scholars and men of science was overwhelmingly superior. They were the real standard-bearers of civilization in those days. Their activity was superior in almost every respect. To consider only the first half of the century, the leading men of science, al-Kindi, the sons of Musa, Al-Khwarzmi, al-Farghani, were all Muslims; Ibn Masawaih, it is true, was a christian, but he wrote in Arabic. Cultural Background The seventh Abbasid caliph, al-Ma'mun (813-833), was even a greater patron of letters and science than Harun al-Rashid. He founded a scientific academy in Bagdad, tried to collect as many Greek manuscripts as possible, and ordered their translation; he encouraged scholars from all kinds, and an enormous amount of scientific work was done under his patronage.

Salaat ul-Tarawih 8 OR 20 RAK'AHS? In a handout by Zindiqs, there appeared the following question and answer (No. 22): (a) Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) reports that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) never prayed more than 8 rak'aats in Taraweeh, so how come nobody disapproves of 20? (b) Is it true that Umar (Allah be pleased with him) introduced it?
    Answer:
    (a) As regards the Taraweeh prayer - people agree that the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and the best way is 11 rak'aats. As regards any addition - then this is DISAPPROVED of and DECLARED AS A BID'AH (A bad innovation). (b) It is not true that Umar (Allah be pleased with him) either prayed or ordered 20 rak'aats. Rather he ordered Ubayy ibn Ka'b to lead the people with 11 rak'aats (al-Muwatta 1/137, with a Sahih Isnad).
It should be said that the vast MAJORITY of the scholars of Hadith, Fiqh, and even the four Mujtahid Imams are in agreement that 20 rak'ahs are the most appropriate, followed by 3 rak'ahs of Witr. First, it should be said that the Hadith reported from Sayyidah Aisha (Radhi Allahu Anhaa) about 11 rak'ahs is not at all to do with Taraweeh, according to the majority of scholars, but in fact concerns the number of rak'ahs of TAHAJJUD prayer! The Hadith in question is as follows:- Narrated Abu Salama ibn Abdur Rahman that he asked Aisha (Allah be pleased with her), "How was the prayer of Allah's Apostle (Peace be upon him) in Ramadan?" She replied, "He did not pray more than eleven raka'at in Ramadan or in any other month. He used to pray four raka'at - let alone their beauty and length - and then he would pray four - let alone their beauty and length - and then he would pray three rak'aat (witr)." She added, "I asked, 'O Allah's Apostle! Do you sleep before praying the Witr?' He replied, 'O Aisha, My eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.'"

    Description from the publisher:
A consise and comprehensive collection of prophetic invocations and prayers. Allah, Most High, says: “Remember me and I will remember you” (Qur’an 40:60) We feel a sense of belonging, protection, and safety when we call out to Allah. When coupled with the powerful formulae of supplication (du'a) and remembrance (dhikr), this calling leads to a feeling of tranquility within our hearts and minds. With this goal in mind, Muslims scholars have compiled numerous books of supplications and remembrances from the Qur’an and Prophetic Sunna. This is the third edition of Reflections of Pearls, a short compilation of Arabic supplications with their English translations and transliterations. Other sections include the etiquettes of supplicating, the 99 names of Allah, select blessings on the Messenger of Allah (saw), the virtues and excellences of certain chapters and verses of the Holy Qur’an, and the method of performing the Istikhara, Ishraq, and other optional prayers. Both adults and children will enjoy and benefit from reading this book.

    Hadeeth
America is putting more pressure on Syria lately, as been mentioned in the news. Here's a hadeeth:
al-Jareeri reported that Abi Nadrah said: We were with Jaabir ibn `Abdillaah who told us, "Soon will the People of `Iraq be unable to give or take from any wealth or goods". We asked, "From where would that be?" He replied, "From the direction of the Non-Arabs. They would embargo them as such." Then he said, "Soon will the People of Syria be unable to give or take from any wealth or goods." We asked, "From where would that be?" He replied, "From the direction of Europe". Then he remained silent for a while and said, "The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said: In the Last Days will rise in my Ummah a Khaleefah who will give wealth in great abundance without measure." He (al-Jareeri) said, "I asked Abi Nadrah and Abi al-`Alaa': Have you two seen that this is `Umar ibn `Abdi-l `Azîz (the Khaleefah of that time)? They both replied, "No".

The Rights of Boys and Girls in Marriage The Value of Time Click to enlarge By Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah The Value of Time is a collection of amazing sayings, anecdotes and wonderful stories of the scholars of the Muslim Ummah, which indicate the importance they attached to time. It is a book that will inspire the youth and the old alike to spend their time wisely, constructively and avoid wasting time. The storeis narrated, unimaginable as they may be, are not fables nor fairy tales, but are all authentic events that have been well documented and narrated by scholars themselves. The author, Shaykh Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghuddah, was one of the prominent scholars of the 20th Century and a veteran leader of the Islamic Movement in Syria. The book provides a vivid insight into a subject of great importance The book highlights the value of time in the field of knowledge and its people Page: Abu Yusuf Discussing a Matter of Fiqh on his Death Bed Abu Yusuf became ill, so I went to visit him, and found him unconscious. When he regained consciousness he said to me: "O Ibrahim, what is your opinion on this matter?" I said to him: "While you are in this state?" Did Al- H ajjaj Change The Qur'an? M S M Saifullah, Mu h First Composed: 1st September 1997 Last Modified: 27th August 2003 Assalamu-`alaykum wa rahamtullahi wa barakatuhu: . Introduction It had been claimed by Orientalists and Christian missionaries that al- H ajjaj was responsible for changing the some contents of the Qur'an. The scandal surrounding al- H ajjaj is apparently based on two different traditions, one Muslim and the other Christian. The Islamic source is Kitab al-Ma s a h if of Ibn Abi Dawud where a report mentions that al- H ajjaj made eleven changes in `Uthman's mu sh af . As for the Christian source, the prominent one is of exchange of letters between Ummayad Caliph `Umar II and the Byzantine Emperor Leo III. A less prominent writing is that of an apology attributed to `Abd al-Ma s ih al-Kindi. We would begin by examining the report in Kitab al-Ma s a h if of Ibn Abi Dawud, the problems with the interpretation of Orientalists and Christian missionaries, the authenticity of the report and the implication of the alleged changes made by al- H ajjaj. Followed by this would be the analysis of Christian polemical sources and their authenticity.
