Symposium to celebrate mathematical giant Ahlfors
A three-day symposium, titled "An Ahlfors Celebration," will be held at Stanford on Sept. 19-21. The event celebrates the life and contributions of one of the great mathematicians of the 20th century. Lars V. Ahlfors, who would have been 90 this year, died late last fall. He was born in Finland in 1907 and came to the United States, where he taught for many years at Harvard. He was one of the first winners of the Fields Medal, generally considered the "Nobel" of mathematics. Ahlfors had a major, but indirect influence on Stanford. Three of his doctoral students came here in the 1950s: Paul Garabedian, Halsey Royden and Robert Osserman. Royden served as dean of humanities and sciences for 10 years and Osserman chaired the mathematics department for six years. The symposium is sponsored by the mathematics department, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley and the American Institute of Mathematics, a recently founded organization devoted to mathematical research and scholarship. All talks will be held in room 380-C of the Department of Mathematics, Building 380, except for the public lecture by Krantz, which will be held in Room 420-041 of the Psychology Building. A conference celebrating the life and work of Lars Ahlfors will be held at Stanford University, September 19-21,1997. Ahlfors, who would have been 90 this year, died late last fall. The goal of this conference is to explore various lines that are currently active areas of research where he made major - and often seminal - contributions. The program will include talks by the following speakers:
Gerald Alexanderson, Santa Clara University
Kari Astala, University of Jyvaskala
Raoul Bott, Harvard University
James Cannon, Brigham Young University
Phillip Griffiths, Institute for Advanced Study
Peter Jones, Yale University
Linda Keen, CUNY
Robert Osserman, Stanford University and MSRI
Dennis Sullivan, CUNY and SUNY
Paul Vojta, UC Berkeley
Michael Wolf, Rice University This conference is sponsored by the American Institute of Mathematics in conjunction with MSRI and Stanford University. We will be able to provide financial support to a limited number of students who wish to attend. To apply for funding, send a letter explaining your interest in attending, together with a letter from a faculty advisor, to the address below. Faculty of Arts and Sciences - Memorial Minute:
Lars Valerian Ahlfors
At a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on October 17, 2000, the following Minute was placed upon the records. Lars' lectures, as well as his writings, were famous for their clarity, economy and elegance. The lectures were delivered in a strongly flavored Scandinavian accent, and his textbook, "Complex Analysis" (1953), is still the leading elementary text on the subject for students of pure mathematics. Lars Valerian Ahlfors was born under tragic circumstances in Helsinki on April 18, 1907: his mother died in childbirth. His father, a professor of engineering, remarried and tried to give Lars a normal boyhood as Finland struggled through World War I and gained its independence from Russia. When he entered the university in 1924, Ahlfors soon caught the eye of Ernst Lindelof, the patriarch of Finnish mathematics, and Rolf Nevanlinna, a rising mathematical star. The year after Ahlfors graduated, Nevanlinna was invited to Zurich and Ahlfors accompanied him. There he met many of the leading mathematicians of Europe and solved an important problem in complex variable theory. Back in Finland he got a lectureship at the University of Turku, where he wrote his thesis and several other papers that attracted international attention and brought him an invitation to Harvard. The Fields Medals were first awarded in 1936, and Ahlfors was one of the two recipients.

He was born in Helsinki, the son of a Professor of Engineering. He studied at Helsinki University from 1924, graduating in 1928 having studied under Ernst Lindelöf and Rolf Nevanlinna.
He assisted Nevanlinna in 1929 with his work on Denjoy's conjecture on the number of asymptotic values of an entire function. Ahlfors was appointed lecturer in mathematics at the University of Turku. He completed his doctorate in 1930.
In 1935 he went to Harvard University and in 1936 he was one of the first two people to be awarded the Fields Medal. He returned to Finland in 1938 to take up a post at the University of Helsinki, but the outbreak of war led to problems although Ahlfors was unfit for military service. He was offered a post at the Federal Polytechnic Institute at Zurich in 1944 and finally managed to travel there in March 1945. He did not enjoy his time in Switzerland and jumped at a chance to leave, returning to work at Harvard where he remained until he retired in 1977; he was William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics from 1964. He was awarded the Vihuri Prize in 1968 and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1981.
His book Complex Analysis (1953) is still the standard text for most courses on the topic. Ahlfors wrote several other significant books, including Riemann surfaces (1960) and Conformal invariants (1973). During his career, he had made decisive contributions to meromorphic curves, value distribution theory, Riemann surfaces, conformal geometry, quasiconformal mappings, and other areas.
