(Redirected from Lars Valerian Ahlfors Lars Valerian Ahlfors April 18 October 11 ) was a Finnish mathematician , remembered for his work in the field of Riemann surfaces and his text on complex analysis He was born in Helsinki , the son of a Professor of Engineering. He studied at Helsinki University from , graduating in having studied under Ernst Lindel¶f and Rolf Nevanlinna He assisted Nevanlinna in with his work on Denjoy 's conjecture on the number of asymptotic values of an entire function . Ahlfors was appointed lecturer in mathematics at the …bo Akademi (in Turku ). He completed his doctorate in In he went to Harvard University and in he was one of the first two people to be awarded the Fields Medal . He returned to Finland in to take up a post at the University of Helsinki, but the outbreak of war led to problems although Ahlfors was unfit for military service. He was offered a post at the Federal Polytechnic Institute at Zurich in and finally managed to travel there in March 1945 . He did not enjoy his time in Switzerland and jumped at a chance to leave, returning to work at Harvard where he remained until he retired in

Lars Ahlfors ' father was professor of mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute in Helsingfors. Tragically his mother died in childbirth when he was born. Ahlfors describes his early years in [2]:- As a child I was fascinated by mathematics without understanding what it was about, but I was by no means a child prodigy. As a matter of fact I had no access to mathematical literature except in the highest grades. Having seen many prodigies spoilt by ambitious parents, I can only be thankful to my father for his restraint. the high school curriculum did not include any calculus, but I finally managed to learn some on my own, thanks to clandestine visits to my father's engineering library. Ahlfors entered Helsingfors University in 1924, and there he was taught by

Died: Oct. 11, 1996, Pittsfield, Mass., U.S. Finnish mathematician who was awarded one of the first two Fields Medals in 1936 for his work with Riemann surfaces. He also won the Wolf Prize in 1981. Ahlfors was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Oslo, Nor., in 1936. He was cited for methods he had developed to analyze Riemann surfaces of inverse functions in terms of covering surfaces. His principal contributions were in the theory of Riemann surfaces, but his theorems (the Ahlfors finiteness theorem, the Ahlfors five-disk theorem, the Ahlfors principal theorem, etc.) touch on other areas as well, such as the theory of finitely generated Kleinian groups. In 1929 he resolved a conjecture of Arnaud Denjoy on entire functions. Later Ahlfors worked on quasi-conformal mappings and, with Arne Beurling, on conformal invariants. Ahlfors' publications include Complex Analysis (1953); with Leo Sario, Riemann Surfaces Lectures on Quasi-Conformal Mappings (1966); and

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.
