Executive summary: Instituzioni Analitiche Italian mathematician, linguist and philosopher, was born at Milan on the 16th of May 1718, her father being professor of mathematics in the university of Bologna. When only nine years old she had such command of Latin as to be able to publish an elaborate address in that language, maintaining that the pursuit of liberal studies was not improper for her sex. By her thirteenth year she had acquired Greek, Hebrew, French, Spanish, German and other languages. Two years later her father began to assemble in his house at stated intervals a circle of the most learned men in Bologna, before whom she read and maintained a series of theses on the most abstruse philosophical questions. Records of these meetings are given in de Brosse's Lettres sur l'Italie and in the Propositiones Philosophicae , which her father caused to be published in 1738. These displays, being probably not altogether congenial to Maria, who was of a retiring disposition, ceased in her twentieth year, and it is even said that she had at that age a strong desire to enter a convent. Though the wish was not gratified, she lived from that time in a retirement almost conventual, avoiding all society and devoting herself entirely to the study of mathematics. The most valuable result of her labors was the

More Women in Math
This week I have chosen to spotlight a woman who was not only brilliant mathematically, but a great humanitarian. First I would like to mention that another excellent source on women mathematicians is the book Women in Mathematics by Lynn M. Olsen. Second, since last week I have discovered that there is a computer server named hypatia.math . (Hurrah!) Now, let me introduce you to Maria Geatan Agnesi, the first woman math professor. Maria Geatan Agnesi was undoubtably unique among mathematicians. She lived her life in Milan, Italy, from 1718-1799. She had the fortune to be born into a society that found intelligent women attractive. She mastered many languages in her early childhood and at age nine published a Latin discourse describing the benefits of educating women. Her father was a professor in mathematics and the Agnesi home became a hub for intellectual activity. Despite her shy nature, Maria became actively involved in the discussions that ensued in her home. She was the oldest of 21 children and when her mother died she took on the responsibility of caring for the household. Even with this burden she continued her work in mathematics, though in a less public environment. In 1738 she published a collection of essays on philosophy and natural science entitled

WOMEN in Early Modern European SCIENCE:
Maria Agnesi, Laura Bassi, Caroline Herschel, Mary Winkelmann Kirch, and Emilie du Chatelet.
Since the beginning of time, women have played a vital role in the understanding of scientific processes. It is scientific women through out the centuries that have shaped our understanding of scientific technology. Approximately half of the human race, being women, has been important to the development of religion, agriculture and medicine. Even though the one way for women scientists to make it into other fields was through the scientific field of botany. A common theme I noticed in my research is that the historians were beginning to acknowledge that women were capable of doing more than gender defined activities, such as domestic duties and child rearing. Another similarity among these scientific women was that they each had published an important or famous work. For four thousand years, women have worked side by side with the men in their great quest for scientific knowledge and recognition. For example, these women of the past should be included in the discussion of the present and the future. The strength of this arguement depends on recognition of women such as Maria Agnesi, Laura Bassi, Caroline Herschel, Mary Winkelmann Kirch, and Emilie du Chatelet. Maria Agnesi was a child prodigy who mastered Latin, Hebrew, and Greek by the age of nine. She is by far the most important and extraordinary figure in mathematics during the eighteenth century. She earned the chair for mathematics early in her lifetime. Her most important work

Click here for audio of Episode 217. Today, we meet the Witch of Agnesi. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. H ere's an old geometry book. One of its problems leads you to construct a singularly gentle and graceful curve. We're told that the curve is called the Witch of Agnesi. But why? There's nothing sinister about its flowing line. It turns out that one person who worked with this curve was Maria Agnesi, a noted 18th-century Italian mathematician a woman mathematician! So she was the Witch. Well, perhaps. But maybe we should meet the lady. Maria Agnesi was born in 1718, the daughter of an Italian mathematics professor at the University of Bologna. She was a child prodigy and the apple of her father's eye. Yet she was shy and retiring. She wanted to become a nun, but her father wouldn't have that. Still, she never married. When she was twenty, her mother died and she took responsibility for the household. She also began work on what was already her second book.

In 1991, the people who are responsible for such things, named a crater on the planet Venus "Agnesi" in honor of this distinguished Italian scientist. Agnesi's field was not astronomy, but mathematics. And while the planet Venus is often associated with the idea of romantic love, Maria was never married; in fact, she desired to be a nun. Her passion, it seems, was about ideas; not affairs of the heart. As a young girl MARIA GAETANA AGNESI was called a "Walking Polyglot" and the "Seven Tongued Orator." At the age of nine she transcribed and delivered a discourse in Latin on the need for female education entitled, "Oratio qua ostenditur artium liberalium studia femineo sexu necitiquam abhorre." She spoke Greek at 11 and Hebrew at 13. She was born on May 16, 1718, the first of 21 children of Pietro Agnesi a wealthy and educated man of Milan, Italy. Pietro's family had earned their wealth in the silk business. Her mother, one of Pietro's three wives was Anna Fortunato Brivio. On July 16, 1739 the French writer Charles de Brosses attended a gathering at the Agnesi home to hear Maria Gaetana deliver and debate intellectual issues, in Latin, with other assembled guests. (Her younger sister, Maria Theresa, an accomplished harpsichordist and singer also performed that evening.) Of the 20 year old Maria Gaetana, de Brosses wrote

Agnesi - en heltinde i matematikhistorien?
Abstract
Litteratur:
