  • wrote first mathematics book by a woman that still survives first woman appointed as a mathematics professor at a university
Maria Agnesi's father was Pietro Agnesi, a wealthy nobleman and a professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna. It was normal in that time for the daughters of noble families to be taught in convents, and to receive instruction in religion, household management and dressmaking. A few Italian families educated daughters in more academic subjects; a few attended lectures at the university or even lectured there. Pietro Agnesi recognized the talents and intelligence of his daughter Maria. Treated as a child prodigy, she was given tutors to learn five languages (Greek, Hebrew, Latin, French and Spanish) and also philosophy and science.

Her treatises on mathematics were well received by the foremost mathematicians. The plane curve known as versiera is also called the "Witch of Agnesi." She was appointed by Benedict XIV to teach mathematics at Bologna. After several years as director of the Hospice Trivulzio of the Blue Nuns at Milan she joined the order.

Maria Teresa Agnesi Life Italian composer, harpsichordist, singer and librettist: as a girl she performed in her home while her elder sister Maria Gaetna (1718-99; she became a distinquished mathematician) lectured and debated in Latin. Charles de Brosses, who heard them on 16 July 1739 and was highly impressed, reported that Maria Teresa performed harpsichord pieces by Rameau and both sang and played compositions of her own invention. Her first theatrical work, Il restauro d'Arcadia, was successfully presented in Milan's ducal theatre in 1747. At about this time she dedicated collections of her own arias and instrumental pieces to the rulers of Saxony and Austria; according to Simonetti the Empress Maria Theresa sang from a collection of arias that Agnesi had given her. MIDI FILE - Sonata for keyboard (4'13'') She married Pier Antonio Pinottini on 13 June 1752 but had no children. Her next opera, Ciro in Armenia, produced a the Regio Ducal Teatro in 1753, was to her own libretto. In 1766 her Insubria consolata was performed in Milan to honour the engagement of Beatrice d'Este and the Archduke Ferdinand.

AGNESI, MARIA GAETANA (1718 - 1799). Instituzioni Analitiche ad Uso della Gioventu Italiana . Milan: 1748. The Library's holdings of important early mathematical works grow as opportunities arise. Agnesi's major work in the development of differential calculus, two large quarto volumes of over one thousand pages, is one of several acquired in 1988 on the Robert Carmichael Fund. Its comprehensiveness and the several new concepts modestly introduced in this masterpiece brought its author, a professor of mathematics in Bologna, wide and immediate academic acclaim and eventual recognition as the first woman mathematician. Maria Agnesi was the eldest of 21 children from a wealthy family in Milan. (Her sister Maria Teresa Agnesi, 1720-1790, was a noted composer). She devoted her life to philosophical, religious and mathematical studies and became a nun. Pope Benedict XIV appointed her to a position at the University of Bologna. Truesdell wrote: "In October [1750, Agnesi] received a papal rescript confirming her appointment. She had already devoted herself to a holy, retired life; while her name remained on the rolls of the university for forty-five years, she never went to Bologna." Her book, Instituzioni Analitiche ad Uso della Gioventu Italiana , was one of the first calculus texts after L'Hosptial. The translation by John Colson was completed in 1760, but not published until 1801.

I don´t feel strong to change the text myself, firstly because of my poor English, and also because I don´t know in how many other languages the "versiera" of Agnesi is reputed as a witch... But I propose "With the result that English speakers, and speakers of languages that have inherited from English the misstranslation, know the curve as the witch of Agnesi" Vivero 17:24, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)
  • I've corrected the text to take into account your comments. The fact that the curve is known as "witch" in both languages suggests that the name was given for a reason other than the one suggested in the article. Perhaps she was known as a witch. She would very probably have been considered one had she lived in the Spain of that age. — danakil 10:32, Sep 4, 2004 (UTC)

Agnesi, Maria Gaetana
Born: , May 16, 1718, Milan, Habsburg crown land [now in Italy]
Died: Jan. 9, 1799 Milan Italian mathematician and philosopher, considered to be the first woman in the Western world to have achieved a reputation in mathematics. Agnesi was the daughter of the professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna. She was an extremely precocious child who at an early age mastered Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and several modern languages. When she was only nine years old, her Latin discourse in defense of higher education for women was printed. In 1738 appeared her Propositiones philosophicae ("Propositions of Philosophy"), a series of essays on natural philosophy and history, based upon discussions before a scientific group meeting in her father's house. Her best-known work, Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della giovent italiana ("Analytical Institutions for the Use of Italian Youth"), was published in 1748. This work's two huge volumes provided a comprehensive and systematic treatment of algebra and analysis, including such relatively new developments as integral and differential calculus. The Instituzioni analitiche enjoyed great popularity and was translated into several languages. In this text is found a discussion of the

Historical Background Maria Gaetana Agnesi (1719-1799) of Milan was a gifted scholar and linguist who was first published at the age of nine with a Latin essay defending higher education for women. She was a well-published scientist by the age of 20 and was made an honorary member of the faculty at the University of Bologna with the consent of the pope at the age of thirty. She later retired to devote herself to her religious work. Her two volume textbook was the first comprehensive textbook on the calculus after L'Hopital's earlier book. She is most famous for her curve Agnesi called versiera, or turning curve. We know this curve by the name the "witch of Agnesi" because a British mathematician, John Colson, translated the word versiera incorrectly. See an animation with GSP?
