F RANKLIN

Franklin was born Jan. 17, 1706. Celebrate his Tercentenary in 2006! In 1776 Benjamin Franklin
He was forty years old before he took up scientific research; until then he had been chiefly concerned with earning a living. His brief formal education ended at the age of ten when he was removed from school to help his father, a Boston chandler and soapmaker. But he had acquired an interest in books and was soon apprenticed to his elder brother, a printer. Before the end of his apprenticeship he ran away to seek his fortune, and after a short time in Philadelphia, sailed for England. In London he perfected his knowledge of the art of printing and made friends with some gentlemen scientists. He just missed being introduced to the aging Isaac Newton. Returning to Philadelphia in 1726, Franklin set up a printing business. His Poor Richard's Almanack and other publications were popular, and he also succeeded in colonial society, throwing himself enthusiastically into every variety of civic affairs.
In 1743 an itinerant lecturer from England demonstrated the latest electrical experiments to the wondering colonials. Franklin saw these demonstrations and later bought the lecturer's entire apparatus. In 1745 he began to experiment on his own, and soon after turned the management of his printing business over to a partner. "When I disengaged myself . . . from private business," he wrote, "I flatter'd myself that, by the sufficient tho' modest fortune I had acquired, I had secured leisure during the rest of my life for philosophical studies and amusements."

69. Geomagnetic Theories From 1800 To 1900
franz aepinus (17241802) developed an alternative, detailed, mathematical theoryin 1759 which assumed a different sort of magnetic fluid (Home, ch. 4).
http://www.agu.org/history/mf/articles/Geomag19.html
Geomagnetic Theories from 1800 to 1900
A period of rejection of long-held ideas, rapid extension of observation, testing and rejection of new physical theories, and the development of new mathematical approaches to geomagnetism. The status of nineteenth-century geomagnetic theory was presented by the English natural philosopher John Herschel (1792-1871) in 1840, on the eve of what was called the Magnetic Crusade. He wrote that although in experimental sciences situations can be manipulated to get directly at efficient causes, in observational sciences such as astronomy and the study of Earth's magnetism, theories provide coherence to records otherwise disjointed. In such sciences, he wrote, "the theory is the science" (Herschel, p. 66). Herschel saw geomagnetic theories as temporary structures, scaffolds: "tentative, transient, and empirical conceptions . . ." (p. 67). Terrestrial magnetism in the nineteenth century was no mere inductive science, but its theories were also not solidly established. Not surprisingly, then, ideas about the causes of Earth's magnetism did indeed come and go. By 1800, magnetism generally and for the first time "occupied its own space on the map of natural philosophy" (Fara, p. 83). Although not due to great discoveries but to complex social developments, this situation rested on certain ideas about magnetism. Gowin Knight (1713-1772) was a foremost proponent of magnetic fluid theory (see Fara, pp. 44-60). Knight in 1748 (pp. 66-77) maintained that the curved lines of iron filings near a magnet indicate the paths of magnetic fluids (Fara, p. 150). His was a fluid of corpuscles, separated by a repulsive force, and present within iron. Meanwhile, Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) and Charles-Fran‡ois Du Fay (1698-1739) among others based their work on circulating subtle matter, somewhat like that proposed by Ren‚ Descartes (1596-1650). Various magnetic fluids or ethers were actively explored and advocated either side of 1800 by Tiberius Cavallo, Thomas Young, John Robison, and John Dalton (Fara, pp. 247-257).

http://www.jjkent.com/articles/phenomena-magnetic-energy-stones.htm
All About Electric or Magnetic Gems and Precious Stones
about the phenomenal energy that is scientifically demonstrated to have proceeded to humans from certain stones and gems such as tourmaline, amber, and loadstones
The electric or magnetic gems, tourmaline, amber, and loadstone, possess not only great scientific interest, but demonstrate the fact that a certain energy really does proceed from some of these fair, ornamental objects, an energy that produces a positive action from without upon the human body. This may well serve to make us less resolutely sceptical as to the possible presence in gem-stones of some other forms of emanation not as yet susceptible of scientific determination. bodyOffer(500263) In connection with this pretty recital it is interesting to note that the first chance observation of the attractive qualities of tourmalines is said to have been made in Amsterdam by a group of Dutch children whose attention had been attracted by a number of tourmaline crystals brought from the Orient, and who were puzzled to see bits of ash and straw attracted to the stones. This came to the knowledge of some Dutch lapidaries, who for a time called the stone Aschentrekker, or "Ash-Attractor." Our name tourmaline is derived from turmali, the name given the stone by the natives of Ceylon. There seems some little likelihood that certain examples of the gem called lychnis and noted by Pliny may have been varieties of the tourmaline. As the first tourmalines brought to modern Europe came to Holland from Ceylon, we might conjecture that those kinds of lychnis said by Pliny to have been brought from India had a like origin. Of these Indian specimens, the finest examples of this gem, one kind resembled the carbuncle or ruby, while another bore the designation Ionia because its color was like that of the violet (in Greek ion). The most striking peculiarity of the lychnis was its power to attract straws or bits of paper, when it had been heated by the sun's rays or by hand-friction.

Pyroelectricity: From Ancient Curiosity to Modern Imaging Tool
Changes in the net dipole moment of certain materials form
the basis for a broad range of IR detectors. Sidney B. Lang One of the least-known properties of solid materials, pyroelectricity is rigorously defined as the temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarization in certain anisotropic solids. To appreciate the meaning of that definition and the nature of the pyroelectric effect, consider a simple example: a thin, parallel-sided sample of material, such as a tourmaline crystal or a ceramic disk of barium titanate, cut so that its crystallographic symmetry axis is perpendicular to the flat surfaces. The unit cells of pyroelectric materials have a dipole moment. The dipoles are packed so that the components of the dipole moment in each unit cell add up in the direction normal to the flat surfaces. The dipole moment per unit volume of the material is called the spontaneous polarization P S . Always nonzero in a pyroelectric material

franz Maria aepinus (17241802) presents the first mathematical treatment ofelectrical forces and constructs first condenser with parallel plates.
http://www.pbs.org/tesla/res/res_electime.html
William Gilbert (1540-1603) demonstrates attractive and repulsive force from rubbing many substances together (electrostatic charge); calls them "electrics," and suggests the earth itself is a magnet.
Otto von Guericke (1602-86) constructs first friction machine to generate static charge, using a revolving ball of sulphur.
Stephen Gray (1696-1736) conducts experiments that show electricity moves.
Benjamin Franklin (1706-90) proposes the notion of positive and negative charge, conserving a balance except when a deficit is brought about by some means. His famous kite experiments, identifying lightning as a form of electrical discharge, take place in 1752.
Georg von Kleist (c.1700-48) and Pieter van Musschenbroek (1692-1761) invent the Leyden jar, the first condenser (capacitor).
Franz Maria Aepinus (1724-1802) presents the first mathematical treatment of electrical forces and constructs first condenser with parallel plates.
Henry Cavendish (1731-1810) anticipates later work of Coulomb and Ohm, but shuns publication. The concepts of potential difference and a zero reference point, a ground, are his.
Charles Augustin de Coulomb (1736-1806) works out reciprocal law of electrical force (varying inversely as the square of distance between two charges).
