Chronology of Science in the United States 1800-1809 DATE EVENT SUBJECTS Benjamin Waterhouse (1754-1846) vaccinated his son for smallpox, the first American physician to use the procedure. Medicine / Disease ca.1800 John Griscom (1774-1852) began public subscription lectures in New York on science (especially chemistry). This was the start of Griscom's lecturing that continued for a number of years. General or Miscellaneous / Chemistry The first modern suspension bridge was built by Pennsylvanian James Finley. Engineering and Applied Science Jared Mansfield (1759-1830) published Essays, Mathematical and Physical (New Haven), which has been referred to as the first work of original research in mathematics by an American. Mathematics Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) and his son Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) excavated and assembled the almost complete skeletal remains of two mastodons found in Orange County, New York. One was added to the father's Philadelphia natural history museum, while the son took the other on tour in 1802 to New York and to London. In 1814, Rembrandt Peale established a museum in Baltimore and the second mastodon was displayed there. Paleontology / Zoology 1801 (September 1) David Hosack (1769-1835) purchased twenty acres on Manhattan on which he subsequently developed his Elgin Botanic Garden. From 1809 to 1811, Frederick Pursh (1774-1820) served as gardener. In 1811, the Garden became the property of the Regents of the State of New York; in 1814, it was attached to Columbia University but was not maintained.

Math Words, pg 15 Back to Math Words Alphabetical Index apsides The word apside, and its related terms apoapsis and periapsis are most commonly applied to conic sections, particularly the ellipse. The term apside can actually be applied to any motion in reference to a fixed reference point, and refers to a point on the orbit where, for at least an instant, the point is neither approaching nor receding from the reference point. In an ellipse the distance from a focus to the nearest vertex is called apoapsis. In the case of the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the sun, the point where the Earth is closest to the sun is called aphelion (from helios ) and in the orbit of the moon or other satellite about the Earth the closest point is called apogee (from Geo for Earth The distance from the focus of the ellipse to the most distant vertex is called the periapsis, and the special case for orbits about the sun is called perihelion , and for orbits around the Earth the term is perigee The root apsis is sometimes written apse in architecture where it is used to represent a (usually) domed projection of a building. The original Greek root is from the word

    Probability
[Categories: Probability theory, Decision theory, Applied mathematics]
The word probability derives from the (Any dialect of the language of ancient Rome) Latin probare (to prove, or to test).
Informally, probable is one of several words applied to uncertain events or knowledge,
being more or less interchangeable with likely risky hazardous uncertain , and doubtful , depending on the context.
Chance odds , and bet are other words expressing similar notions.
As with the (Click link for more info and facts about theory of mechanics) theory of mechanics which assigns precise definitions to such everyday terms as work and force
so the (Click link for more info and facts about theory of probability) theory of probability attempts to quantify the notion of probable
    Historical remarks
The scientific study of probability is a modern development. (The act of playing for stakes in the hope of winning (including the payment of a price for a chance to win a prize)) Gambling shows that there has been an interest in quantifying the ideas of probability for millennia, but exact mathematical descriptions of use in those problems only arose much later.
The doctrine of probabilities dates to the correspondence of (French mathematician who founded number theory; contributed (with Pascal) to the theory of probability (1601-1665))

Daniel Treadwell, a promising scientist, who studied with John Winthrop at Harvard, joined the King's College faculty as professor of natural philosophy; his scientific career cut short by smallpox, from which he died in 1760.

Several New York City physicians establish a medical school within King's College, the second such college in the colonies (University of Pennsylvania first) and the first to offer courses; one of the founding faculty, Dr. John Jones, later publishes the first surgical textbook in America, Plain Remarks on the Treatment of Wounds and Fractures

Introduction On May 14, 1804, two resourceful and brave U.S. Army officers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, embarked on a journey of exploration and discovery with forty-five men and a well-stocked keelboat. The party crossed the North American continent from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean-and back. Upon returning to St. Louis on September 23, 1806, they were welcomed as heroes, having fulfilled President Thomas Jefferson's charge to chart the virtually unexplored region. Unbeknownst to all but a few inhabitants, another historic venture was launched just two weeks before Lewis and Clark broke from their winter quarters and plunged into the mouth of the Mississippi. On May 1, 1804, George Baron and a crew of associates mailed the initial issue of the country's first mathematics journal. Jn fact, today The Mathematical Correspondent (here sometimes shortened to the Correspondent or merely the MC) is generally regarded as America's first special-interest scientific publication. Curiously, the Correspondent's run ended in November 1806, two months after Lewis and dark's triumphal return. So, while the general public celebrates the bicentennial of their exploration, let us mathematicians celebrate our own bicentennial.

FATE Magazine has commissioned Loren Coleman to do the research, compile, and write the biographies for " The Top 100 Cryptozoologists: The Major Living Personalities Associated with Cryptozoology ." You can have input and be part of the project via suggesting those personalities you think should go on the list.
As with the recent list of top 100 Ufologists , the cryptozoologists on the new list must be living, involved in cryptozoology fieldwork, research and writing, and have had a major influence on the field via their thoughts, theories, works, personality, media impact, peer relationships, and discoveries. Cryptozoologists included will be students of various cryptids, including Sea Serpents, Lake Monsters, Yeti, Bigfoot, as well as the lesser known unknown or hidden animals such as the Tsuchinoko, Waitoreke, or the oft-forgotten Tatzelwurm.
Loren Coleman is approaching the list without personal bias, and will include people that may not wish to be in the same room with each other at a Bigfoot, Nessie, or Cryptozoology conference, but who have importance, significance, fame, or infamy in this subfield of zoology. Impact is one of many keys to getting on the list, and such diverse individuals as Mark A. Hall, Peter Byrne, Erik Beckjord, Craig Woolheater, John Kirk, Richard Greenwell, Bobbie Short, Bob Gimlin, Jill Miller, Adrain Shine, Robert Rines, Chad Arment, John Lutz, Helen McGinnis, Greg Long, John Green, Karl Shuker, June O'Neill, John Keel, and Ben Radford are seriously being considered for the list.

    Process Modeling

    Introduction to Process Modeling

What are some of the different statistical methods for model building?
Linear Least Squares Regression Modeling Workhorse Linear least squares regression is by far the most widely used modeling method. It is what most people mean when they say they have used "regression", "linear regression" or "least squares" to fit a model to their data. Not only is linear least squares regression the most widely used modeling method, but it has been adapted to a broad range of situations that are outside its direct scope. It plays a strong underlying role in many other modeling methods, including the other methods discussed in this section: nonlinear least squares regression weighted least squares regression and LOESS Definition of a Linear Least Squares Model Used directly, with an appropriate data set , linear least squares regression can be used to fit the data with any function of the form
    in which
  • each explanatory variable in the function is multiplied by an unknown parameter,
  • there is at most one unknown parameter with no corresponding explanatory variable, and
