      Adelard of Bath
      (fl. Early 12th century)
English scholastic philosopher and early interpreter of Arabic scientific knowledge.
Adelard translated into Latin an Arabic version of Euclid's Elements, which for centuries served as the chief geometry textbook in the West. He studied and taught in France and travelled in Italy, Cilicia, Syria, Palestine and perhaps also Spain (c. 1110-25) before returning to Bath, England, and becoming a teacher of the future King Henry II. In his Platonizing dialogue De eodem et diverso ("On Sameness and Diversity"), his atomism and his attempt to reconcile the reality of universals with the individuals distinguish him from other Platonists. His Quaestiones naturales (76 discussions of human nature, meteorology, astronomy, botany and zoology) are based on Arabic science. His other writings include works on the abacus and the astrolabe and a translation of an Arabic astronomical table.

Z Adelard of Bath Biography Adelard of Bath was a 12th century English scholar who traveled widely, especially to Islamic lands. He studied at Tours and taught at Laon. In addition to original work (some of which he attributed to Islamic scholars), he translated Islamic works of astrology, astronomy and mathematics. His works were written in Latin.
He wrote a short treatise on the abacus (Regulae abaci, but his best known works are Questiones naturalis (Natural Questions), a work in the form of a Platonic dialogue and De eodem et diverso a work which contrasts the virtues of the seven liberal arts with worldly interests.
His translations include the works of Euclid and al-Khwarizmi.
In Natural Questions he displays some original thought of a scientific bent, raising the question of the shape of the Earth (he believed it round) and the question of how it remains stationary in space, and also the interesting question of how far a rock would fall if a hole were drilled through the earth and a rock dropped in it, see center of gravity. Also the interesting question of why water experiences difficulty flowing out of a container that has been turned upside down, see atmospheric pressure and vacuum. Many of the other questions addressed reflect the popular culture of the times.

EUCLID Liber elementorum ... in artem geometriae... [translated by Adelard of Bath, edited by Campanus of Novara]. [colophon:] Venice, Erhard Ratdolt, 25 May 1482 Chancery folio, 295 x 215 mm, ff [138, including terminal blank], with large white-on-black woodcut border on a2 recto, 15 white-on-black woodcut initials, and ca 600 typemetal geometrical diagrams, heading on a2r printed in red; top right edge of border on a2 recto just touched by binder's knife, minute wormhole in outer margin of a few gatherings, occasionally just touching a diagram, a few minor spots, a fine, fresh, unpressed copy in eighteenth-century Italian vellum, spine lettered 'Geometria Euc'[lidi]s in ink in upper compartment, shelfmark '16' in third compartment, in a morocco box. £250,000
First edition of the foundation work of mathematics, 'the oldest science textbook, 2000 years old and still in use' (Dibner).
This compilation and systematisation of all earlier Greek mathematical knowledge since Pythagoras is, more than 2000 years later, still being used. It was the first mathematical work to be printed, and the first major work to be illustrated with mathematical diagrams. This book 'has exercised an influence upon the human mind greater than that of any other work except the Bible' (DSB). It is the foundation work, not only for geometry, but also for number theory.
The text is Campanus of Navara's thirteenth-century version of Adelard of Bath's twelfth-century translation from the Arabic. Ratdolt's edition was one of the first printed books with geometrical diagrams and is a very attractive piece of book production. As Ratdolt emphasised in his dedication to the Doge of Venice, Giovanni Mocenigo, it was the first truly notable piece of mathematical publishing, and he states that as a result of his innovations, the marginal diagrams (schemata geometrica) could now be printed as easily as printing types could. These are traditionally described as being woodcuts, but in fact are typemetal constructions, perhaps produced by sandcasting.

JMC History of Medieval Philosophy / by Maurice De Wulf 171. Anti-Realist Formulas. genera and species are simply individual things regarded under different aspects. Among these we may place the doctrines of Adelard of Bath and of Walter of Mortagne, the "Indifference" theory and the "Collection" theory. (a) Adelard of Bath and the Theory of the "Respectus". The Englishman, ADELARD OF BATH, professor at Paris and Laon, was one of the first of the medieval scholars to complete his scientific education by travelling in Greece and Spain. The first fruits of this acquaintance with an unknown world were his Quaestiones Naturales . Besides a translation of Euclid from the Arabic (1116) and other mathematical writings, Adelard also wrote a treatise De Eodem et Diverso (about 1105-6), which he dedicated to William, Bishop of Syracuse. It is in the form of a dialogue between Philosophia (the unchangeable, De Eodem ) and Philocosmia (changeable knowledge, De Diverso We find in the De Eodem et Diverso the seeds of anti-realism: the same concrete being is genus, species

CHAPTER XXXI
WILLIAM OF CHAMPEAUX, THE INDIFFERENTISTS, ETC.
WILLIAM OF CHAMPEAUX Life William of Champeaux enjoyed among his contemporaries a very high reputation for learning and sanctity. He was known as the Columna Doctorum ; according to Abelard, he was re et fama praecipuus ; and when he died it was said that "the light of the Word of God was extinguished on earth." Sources . Of the philosophical writings of William of Champeaux we possess merely some fragments: a portion of the work De Origine Animae , published by Martene, and forty-two fragments discovered at Troyes by Ravaisson, portions also of a Liber Sententiarum and a Dialogus seu Altercatio Cujusdam Christiani etJudaei Our chief secondary sources of information are Abelard, who constantly refers to his rival teacher, and John of Salisbury. Michaud's Guillaume de Champeaux (Paris, 1867) is an excellent study of our philosopher and his times. DOCTRINES Problem of Universals . According to Abelard, William maintained that the universal is wholly and essentially present in each individual:
