English astronomer and mathematician. At the age of 24, Adams was the first person to predict the position of a planetary mass beyond Uranus . After Johann Gottfried Galle confirmed the existence of Neptune based on independent calculations done by Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier , the two became embroiled in a dispute over priority.

Adams, John Couch (1819 - 1892)
J.C. Adams is the brother of W.G. Adams and was born on the 5. June 1819 in Laneast near Launceston, Cornwall. He was fellow of the Pembroke College in Cambridge, Member of the Royal Society, President of the Royal Astronomical Society and Director of the observatory in Cambridge. He published several papers, including one on the irregularities in the motion of Uranus, from which he predicted (in 1846) the existence of another planet. This planet was found by J. G. Galle in 1846, based on independent calculations by U.J.J. LeVerrier. Adams had sent his calculations to Airy. Adams also observed and calculated the orbit of comet 1864 I and the orbital elements of the Leonid meteor swarm. J. C. Adams died on the 22. January 1892 in London. A Moon and a martian crater is named Adams in his honor as well as minor planet (1996) Adams. In addition, the outermost ring of planet Neptune is named 'Adams Ring'. Reference(s):

John Couch Adams
John Couch Adams 5. Juni in Laneast Cornwall England 20.

'Prof Challis brought one of the Notices of the Astr. Socy. containing my results respecting the Comet.'
In January of 1846 there appeared 'a phenomenon which struck every astronomer with amazement' to quote Herschel: a comet divided into two (Herschel, Outlines of Astronomy, 1849, p.359). Such a thing was hitherto unheard-of and created a sensation. But quickly Adams, as his diary records for March 9th, 1846:
'...solved the equations for determining the relative distance and velocities of the two heads of Biela's comet and communicated the results to Professor Challis, in the evening for his communication to the Philosophical Society' [a Cambridge club, of which Challis was then the President].
The next day Adams improved his comet calculations, receiving some more data from Challis and then going in the evening to the Observatory to view the comet.
    March 14th found him weary:
    - he does not walk to the Observatory to meet Challis, as one might expect. (Challis was then living at the Observatory, as the Plumean astronomy professor there, while Adams lived at St John's College a mile or so away). He reports on his work to Challis, Challis comes round to his house, and he stays at the Observatory 'till late'. On March 19th, he is

John Couch Adams June 5 January 21 ), was a British mathematician . His most famous achievement was predicting the existence and position of Neptune , using only mathematics . The calculations were made to explain discrepancies with Uranus 's orbit and the laws of Kepler and Newton . At the same time, but unknown to both, the same calculations were made by Urbain Le Verrier . Le Verrier would assist Galle in locating the planet (September ); which was found within 1° of its predicted location, a

The Neptune File: Planet Detectives and the Discovery of Worlds Unseen. Tom Standage. Penguin Books Ltd. 2000. ISBN 0-713-99472-X.  pp200.  £12.99. ISBN 0-713-99472-X John Couch Adams “a lot has been written about the Neptune affair but until now nothing so even-handed as Tom Standage’s new book” Tom Standage is science correspondent for the Economist. He is the author of The Victorian Internet and has written for Wired, the Guardian, the Indipendent and the Daily Telegraph. He is married and lives in Greenwich. Penguin Books: The Neptune File As said, a lot has been written about the Neptune affair but until now nothing so even-handed as Tom Standage’s new book. There is something to be said for a well-informed science journalist writing an unbiased account of a rather specialized subject for what I assume is a general readership.  His Neptune story is well presented and the scientific-political intricacies of the time easily followed. Tom Standage hits the nail squarely on the head in describing an unfortunate episode that could have gone in favour of UK astronomy, but didn’t.  It was, nevertheless, a supreme example of computational dexterity on both sides of the Channel and Standage describes the situation with paramount skill.  Couch Adams wouldn’t say ‘boo’ to a goose but Le Verrier didn’t hide his light behind anybody’s bushel. Both calculated the position of the unseen planet with remarkable accuracy but were beholden to the telescopists to find it for them.

    80. John Couch Adams

    John Couch Adams
Ci crederesti ?
