Adams, John Couch
English astronomer who mathematically deduced the existence of the planet Neptune 1845 from the effects of its gravitational pull on the motion of Uranus, although it was not found until 1846 by J G Galle.
Adams also studied the Moon's motion, the Leonid meteors, and terrestrial magnetism.
Adams was born in Landeast, Cornwall, and educated at Cambridge, where he spent virtually his entire career.
He became professor 1858 and director of the observatory 1860.
The calculations to account for certain aberrations in the orbit of Uranus were taken up independently by Adams and French astronomer Urbain Leverrier
By 1845 Adams had determined the position and certain characteristics of the hypothetical planet affecting the orbit, but a search for the new planet was not instigated for nearly a year at Cambridge.
Meanwhile, Leverrier sent his figure to Galle at the Berlin Observatory, and Galle, having better maps, was able to find the planet within a few hours.
The discovery of Neptune was credited to Leverrier.

Adams, John, Adams Adams, Abigail, Click the link for more information. , founded one of the most distinguished families of the United States; their son, John Quincy Adams Adams, John Quincy, Click the link for more information. , was also President.
Early Career
A plain-spoken lawyer, scrupulously honest and dauntingly erudite, Adams emerged into politics as an opponent of the Stamp Act Stamp Act Congress, which met in Oct., 1765, in New York City, included delegates from New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, South Carolina, Maryland, and Connecticut. The congress adopted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances; it declared that freeborn Englishmen could not be taxed without their consent, and, since the colonists were not represented in Parliament, any tax imposed on them without the consent of their colonial legislatures was unconstitutional. Faced with a loss of trade, Parliament repealed the Stamp Act in 1766.

Bode, Johann
German astronomer. He is known for the bogus "Bode's Law" which attempts to explain the sizes of the planetary orbits.
Bond, William Cranch
American astronomer. One of the earliest American astronomers of note, Bond rose from poverty and overcame a lack of formal education to become the first director of the Harvard College Observatory. At the observatory, he studied Saturn and (with William Lassell ) discovered its moon Hyperion

Made by Adams, maker to HRH Prince Albert, 36 Lombard Street, London. Number 3294. Brass mechanism in mahogany box with brass fittings. Base 17cm square, height 18cm. William Swan was Professor of Natural Philosophy in the United College of St. Andrews University from 1859 to 1880. In 1880 he compiled an extensive catalogue listing all the scientific equipment in the department, including the historic instruments. Swan's catalogue entries are meticulous, and also reveal a dry sense of humour: for example, he describes a wooden clock as, "ferociously coarse and useless." Some of the instruments he catalogued still exist today in the School of Physics and Astronomy, such as the armilliary sphere, Gregorian telescope and astrolabes. Swan's main passion was optics, especially spectroscopy. He is credited with inventing the `Swan Spectrometer', which is little known today, although Swan published numerous articles on the subject. He was awarded the Royal Scottish Society of Arts Gold Medal for his work in November 1843. As was the case with many Victorian gentlemen, Swan was interested in many diverse topics and not just his chosen speciality. From the comments in his catalogue, and his correspondence with other scientists, he appears to have been an inquisitive, witty and intelligent character, who was always keen to learn more.
