The first to mathematically predict an unknown planet, his calculations were ignored and someone else discovered Neptune.

John Couch Adams
Can you believe it? Couch is one of over 300 mathematicians that have a lunar crater named after them. John Couch Adams made many other contributions to our knowledge of astronomy. For example, he studied the Leonid meteor shower and correctly concluded that the shower was the result of a comet passing close to Earth once a year. Adams was a mathematics professor at Cambridge and eventually became director of the Cambridge Observatory. He refused a knighthood offered by Queen Victoria to honor him for his accomplishments. Adams did not want the extra attention nor did he feel he had the money to maintain the lifestyle of a knight. He died in 1892 in Cambridge. Adams and his wife are buried under a 70 foot high granite cross in Cambridge. Three years after his death, he was honored with a memorial tablet in Westminster Abbey. The tablet is near the tablet that honors Sir Isaac Newton, another brilliant English mathematician.

John Couch Adams 's parents were Tabitha Knill Grylls and Thomas Adams. The family was a poor one with Thomas being a tenant farmer while Tabitha also came from a farming family. Thomas and Tabitha farmed near Launceston, Cornwall, and it was on Lidcott farm that John, the eldest of his parents seven children, was born. John Couch Adams was named after his mother's uncle, John Couch. It is particularly fitting that this should be the case since John Couch provided some education for Tabitha who inherited his library which included several astronomy books. It was this library, particularly the astronomy books in it, which fired John's interest as he grew up. Hutchins writes [3]:- Adams was brought up in a close Wesleyan family and had his mother's good ear and love of music.

    Adams, John Couch (1819-1892)
An English mathematician and astronomer, born in Lidcot, Cornwall, the son of a tenant farmer, who predicted the existence of Neptune . While a student at Cambridge he wrote this note (found only after his death) dated July 3, 1841: Formed a design at the beginning of this week of investigating, as soon as possible after taking my degree, the irregularities in the motion of Uranus, which are as yet unaccounted for, in order to find whether they may be attributed to the action of an undiscovered planet beyond it; and, if possible, thence to determine the elements of its orbit approximately, which would lead probably to its discovery. Having graduated brilliantly (with more than double the marks of his nearest competitor), he focused his attention on the problem of the trans-Uranian planet. In October 1845 he gave his predicted position for the new world to George Airy , the Astronomer Royal . But Airy procrastinated for nine months until he heard of a similar claim by Urbain Leverrier . He then instigated a search, but the race was lost: Neptune was found in 1846 by Johann
