of Abel (the standard English-language source) and the reader gains a vivid account of the circumstances of his life, his schooling and university education, and the issues that dominated the political and intellectual life of the region (Denmark, Sweden and Norway). The failure of his parents' marriage is hinted at as well as the sources seem to allow. The portraits of the important people in Abel's life are particularly well drawn, although his fiancée Christine Kemp remains slightly in the shade: it is easier to find out about energetic male explorers of remote Norway than most women of the period. Niels Henrik Abel remains an elusive figure, although the pathos of his raging at his early death is well conveyed. He does not seem to have been talented except in mathematics. He could be charming but also shy. He was never going to be "a man of the world." He may have been hurt by the scandal around his father's political defeats, Stubhaug suggests as much, but he was not traumatised by them. However, while Stubhaug has been able to fill out Niels Henrik's family life admirably, he has little to add to the story of his mathematical life. Nor has he tried to delve deeply into the mathematics, aiming as he has at a general readership. He does give us a good and thorough account of his trip to Germany, Switzerland and France, in particular his successful meeting with Crelle that led to the publication of so much of Abel's work in the initial volumes of Crelle's

In 1826 Abel moved to Paris, and during a ten month stay he met the leading mathematicians of France; but he was poorly appreciated, as his work was scarcely known, and his modesty restrained him from proclaiming his researchings. Pecuniary embarrassments, from which he had never been free, finally compelled him to abandon his tour, and on his return to Norway he taught for some time at Christiania. In early April 1829 Crelle obtained a post for him in Berlin, but the letter bringing the offer did not reach Norway until two days after Abel's death from pneumonia at Froland Ironworks near Arendal.

Norway establishes fund for
international prize in mathematics,
to commemorate Niels Henrik Abel
- We need to strengthen mathematics and the sciences. Niels Henrik Abel was an internationally known Norwegian mathematician who nearly 200 years ago made a lasting impact in the world of science. An international prize in mathematics dedicated to his name, is an expression of the importance of mathematics, and is intended to encourage students and researchers. th -century Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829).  The Abel Prize will be awarded annually, and is intended to present the field of mathematics with a prize on the highest level. Large parts of the western world is now seeing a lack of interest in science subjects. A prize to commemorate Niels Henrik Abel is intended to underline the importance of mathematics and science. The plans to establish the prize have already seen wide support, in Norwegian as well as in international circles. Among others, the European Mathematical Society and the International Mathematical Society are behind the initiative. The prize will thus have both national and international support. An Abel Prize was first proposed in 1902, by King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway. However, plans were dropped as the union between the two countries was dissolved in 1905. Thus, the field of mathematics has never had an international prize of the same dimensions and importance as the Nobel Prize.

Abel Bicentennial Conference, Universitetet i Oslo 6. juni 2002 Representatives of the mathematical community, Distinguished guests! It is a great pleasure for me to address the international mathematical community on this occasion. The year 2002 is an important anniversary for the field of mathematics: the bicentennial of the birth of Niels Henrik Abel. The anniversary has already been duly celebrated through a number of events in all parts of Norway. Mathematics has even become part of our everyday lives through a daily Abel column in one of our major newspapers. I am pleased and honoured that so many representatives of the mathematical community have come to Oslo to take part in this event. I can think of no better occasion to present the Niels Henrik Abel Memorial prize in mathematics. My colleague Mrs Clemet, Minister of Education and Research, would have wanted to address you today, but could not since she was called to Parliament. I know she would have wanted to emphasize her dedication to the advancement of science, and to the promotion of scientific excellence. She sends her warm regards to all Abel enthusiasts - and hopes to see you next year.
The history of the Abel prize As you may know, the question of having an award in mathematics similar to the Nobel Prize is a century-old one. At the centennial jubilee in 1902, Abel had already reached the position of national symbol and scientific hero. The celebration committee had two major suggestions: One was to raise a statue over Abel. The other idea was to establish a scientific prize in his name. Only the statue was realized. The chairman of the celebration committee, Mr. Fridtjof Nansen, deeply regretted that the prize had to be abandoned. One of his letters ends as follows:

Laudal Niels Henrik Abel died on April 5th, 1829, at the age of 26, at the home of a rich industrialist not far from his father's and grandfather's parish Gjerstad. On his deathbed, wracked by tuberculosis, he seems to have cursed his fate. He would never be a Herr Professor mit seiner Gehmahlin as he had promised his fiancee. He would never reach the harbor of peace and financial tranquility that he had dreamt about. But he had already fulfilled the vision of the Danish professor Ferdinand Degen, who had suggested in 1821 that the study of elliptic integrals might enable him to "discover, like Magellan, passages into great regions of a single gigantic analytic ocean".

Niels Abel
5.8.1802, Finnöy, Norwegen - 6.4.1829, Froland, Norwegen Der folgende Text (gekürzt) stammt aus dem Buch "Biographien bedeutender Mathematiker" von H. Wussing und W. Arnold (VEV Volk und Wissen 1983, 3. Auflage).
